Coach Bill Conley (official thread)

Coach Bill Conley hosts "free" recruiting basics seminar at Avon Lake High
Posted by Norm Weber March 17, 2009

AVON LAKE -- Coach Bill Conley will host a seminar titled, "Understanding the Recruiting Process," at Avon Lake High School from 7 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday.

The program is open to the public and free of charge.

"The purpose of the recruiting seminar is to give student-athletes of all sports, their parents or
guardians, coaches, teachers, administrators, and the general public basic, honest information about
the college recruiting process and what it involves, no matter the sport or level of play," said Conley.

"College recruiting gets much media attention, but what I find is that the average person does
not know how it really works," he continued. "I clear up the myth and mystery around the process,
and give factual information to help student-athletes."

Conley served as an assistant coach at Ohio State for 17 years, working for head coaches
Earle Bruce, John Cooper and Jim Tressel. All-American and/or eventual NFL players he coached
included Cris Carter, Chris Spielman, Mike Vrabel, and Mike Nugent, to name a few.

Former Buckeyes coach answers recruiting questions

Beginning every February, high school athletes around the country sign national letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic endeavors at the collegiate level. Several Westshore athletes have done just that in recent weeks.

The process in getting to that point, however, can be a daunting one. Parents usually have lots of questions about the various levels of collegiate competition, scholarships and what it takes to even get noticed by a college coach.

Many of these questions were answered last Wednesday night at Bay High School during a two-hour seminar featuring former Ohio State University football coach Bill Conley. Conley, the former recruiting coordinator for the Buckeyes, took an audience of parents and athletes through a power point presentation while interjecting a number of interesting - and sometimes comical ? stories of past recruiting adventures.

?Why do I do this?? he asked the audience. ?Over the years, I realized just how little people knew about the recruiting process. Last year, I did seven of these presentations. This year, I?m doing an additional 23 presentations and have turned down another 10.

?There are all kinds of opportunities out there for high school athletes who want to move on to college. In 31 years of teaching and coaching, I?ve coached just about every sport there is and have worked to get my players into the right college. At that point, I was the go between for the parents and college coaches. Then once my kids got old enough, it gave me yet another perspective once they went through the process.

?Through it all, the number one goal is this: get an education. You?re always one play away from the end of your collegiate career, whether it be your last football game, your last putt on the final hole or that last shot of a basketball game. It?s going to end, and you have to be ready to move on into a career,? he said.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Former Ohio State assistant football coach Bill Conley will be introduced today as the new head football coach at Ohio Dominican.

Conley, 59, worked at OSU on two tours for a combined 17 years under three OSU head coaches - Earle Bruce, John Cooper and Jim Tressel. He had been serving as a recruiting analyst for ESPNU the past several years. He resigned from OSU in the spring of 2004 to pursue other interests, but said then he would not rule out a possible return to coaching.

Bill Conley, left, is introduced as the new Ohio Dominican coach by athletic director Bill Blazer.

Bill Conley wasn't hard to find at Ohio Dominican yesterday morning. It was simply a matter of walking into the slick Bishop James A. Griffin Student Center and looking for the biggest smile.

"I love college football," Conley said, soon after he was named the second coach in the brief history of Ohio Dominican football.

Having spent 17 years over two tours of duty at Ohio State as an assistant and recruiting coordinator under three coaches -- Earle Bruce, John Cooper and Jim Tressel -- and securing his pension, Conley stepped away from coaching in 2004 to pursue other opportunities.

But there was always the sense he would step back in again, especially when he was hired as a recruiting expert by ESPNU a few years ago. That put him back too close to the action.

"Once a coach, always a coach, so I guess I knew that one day I would be back coaching again," said Conley, 59.

College Football: Ashland's foe has distinct OSU flavor
BY JON SPENCER ? News Journal ? November 5, 2010

ASHLAND -- Pepe Pearson. Harlen Jacobs. Mike Tomczak. Lorenzo Styles. Winfield Garnett. Rob Harley.

First-year coach Bill Conley's staff at Ohio Dominican reads like a "Who's Who" of ex-Ohio State football players. Even Conley has long ties to the Buckeyes as a former coach and acclaimed recruiting coordinator.

But unless those former Buckeyes are planning to suit up Saturday, the odds overwhelmingly favor Ashland University when Conley's Panthers host the 6-3 Eagles in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at noon. AU is riding a five-game winning streak and coming off a 56-7 rout of Findlay.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but after a quick googling, I could only find that Conley coached at OSU for 17 years. He left in 2004, so that would put his first year at OSU as 1986. Tressel had already moved onto YSU by then, so how could Conley be the unnamed source in the SI piece (of shit).
