Cleveland Indians Thread of Malaise (2014 Season)

Carrasco has proven time and time again that he's shitty

I suppose they could give Josh Tomlin a whirl if they don't want to bring Bauer up yet? But Carrasco has gots to go.

That's not how it works...his time last year only counted for whether he accrued a Year of Service for the 2013 season. http://www.fangraphs.com/library/principles/contract-details/service-time-super-two/

It's not this year's salary that's the concern...it's the salary in the last year he'll be eligible for arbitration vs what he would get as a free agent a year sooner that's the issue. With a decent starting pitcher--which many/most expect Bauer to become--that money difference will most likely determine whether that season is in Cleveland or elsewhere.
I understand the whole looking forward to FA thing, but this team is contending NOW and Bauer can help NOW. Shoot, they had him up last year for three weeks on a 90-win club. I mentioned his present deal because he'll have a higher starting point when he makes it to arbitration (we should hope that he succeeds to that point).

It just seems to be overly cautious to keep him down for an extra two weeks so he hits free agency after 2019 instead of 2018.

Jesus Aguilar with another homer. Jose Ramirez goes deep twice...his numbers have never been great but all of a sudden he's the youngest guy in the IL, playing the whole year at 21.

Unless Dolan has made a decision/deal to sell the team--and there's no evidence that has happened--they are just NOT going to go all in for any one season. They won't sacrifice significant future dollars to improve the current team.

Look at their history throughout Dolan's ownership. The closest they came to making that kind of bet was 2008 when they claimed they overspent for Kerry Wood, etc. in hopes of contending another year in a row. It blew up in their face with a very slow start.....and they said that would never happen again. It hasn't and it won't.

After contending last year they did very little to improve this team in the offseason. Instead, they reminded us that they spent their 2014 free agent money a year early because they projected free agent prices would jump up after the 2013 season. While this team's management won't admit it for weeks when a player is obviously injured, they have been very up front with the press and fans about how they are going to manage the team with respect to free agents and long term contracts.

Same thing every single game for Salazar and Carrasco. Salazar shows signs of being great, then he makes a mistake and gets killed for it, loses his cool and then just falls flat. Carrasco looks great for the first 9 hitters, then the other team adjusts, he can't do the same, and he gets shelled.

One positive though is Swish seems to finally be getting warmer. Brantley and Murphy are still doing great thankfully.

Santana has to be the most pathetic 4 hitter in baseball right now. in a 2-for-43 slump right now. His .136 batting average is by far the worst of the team, and he has a whopping 3 RBI's so far. He has 18 k's so far in his 19 games. He is on pase for 153 k's this year as of right now/ As much crap as we've given Assdribble, he is hitting way better than Santana.

Santana is useless if he's not behind the plate, and even then you have to live with his deplorable defense. He has never produced enough to be playing one of the corner infield positions, especially when they're getting mediocre production from whatever stiff is across the diamond from him. It's clear the 3B experiment is messing with his head. He's gone from a mediocre producer who at least walked a lot to a stiff who can't do anything at all.

Santana sees a fastball he thinks he can hit...

Sad thing is they said he switched to 3rd in part to reduce the wear and tear on him from catching so he can be healthier and produce more hitting. Apparently that's not going so well...

Salazar is tipping his changeup...I don't know how, but Ray Charles can apparently see it coming.

Uh, that and grooving it right down main street. The Moustakas at bat he showed it to him twice, and missed bad, that's gonna get hammered. (Not saying he's not tipping, but, that ball was being asked to be crushed)

As to Santana, the way gomes is throwing to bases, we might be happy he can still catch. I dunno, they're still shitty.

Carrasco is out of options so if we try to send him to Columbus he probably will be picked up by another team, any team, and become a Cy Young winner in 2-3 years. Maybe they should try him in the bullpen before giving up on him totally.
Salazar is a long relief pitcher. Down by 3-5 runs, come in for 2-4 innings and keep the team in the game. That would normally be what I would say, but beyond that, teams seem to have a hard time the first time they see him, so he's good for the 6th and/or 7th of a close game too, as long as he doesn't see the same batters again. A stater, however, he is not, unless he figures out how to make some adjustments.

As for Santana, I am wondering when Francona develops a cingulate cortex and finally moves him in the order. He is too patient for a #4 hitter, without the power to back it up. He doesn't strike out a ton necessarily, but he doesn't really hit either. He should be hitting like 2nd (when he is going well, with patience, walks, put the ball in play) or 7th.
