Cleveland Indians Thread of Malaise (2014 Season)

Thank you Baltimore for taking the Big U for 4 years and $50 million. It will be interesting to see how he performs with a new pitching coach.

I also do not think Masterson is worth $11 million which he is asking for in arbitration. I just do not see how he can justify that. The salaries in baseball are just out of whack.

Well, Masterson is asking for that because Ubaldo got 12.5? I mean, I know who I'd rather give that $ to.

Anyway, out of whack, yeah, but the market is what it is.

And honestly, I'd have not laughed at Baltimore if they gave him 2 years for 25... but 4? Big risk.

this was always going to arbitration. arbitration will be the baseline when talking extension with masterson this upcoming season.

but baltimore must be bat[Mark May] crazy to give ubaldo 4 years and nearly $50 million. a guy that has about one half a season of good pitching in the last three years, one in which his peripherals would indicate may be hard to duplicate. add to that the fact that he is 30, but has been as healthy as you could imagine, and he's due for an injury. scary contract.

Reports are that Indians and Masterson have agreed to avoid arbitration on a one year deal worth 9 something...per ESPN (no link yet)

I was thinking about Masterson when I read that Homer Bailey signed a long-term big deal with the Reds yesterday. There is an article on Cleveland.com about how it might affect Masterson saying with the Indian past this year. I do not think the odds are that great going forward unless something big, like winning the AL championship, happens this year with the Indians:biggrin2:

Interesting article on the 5 best Tribe bullpens in the last 20 years. Looking at the names, the sheer amount of "one-year wonders" shows what a crap shoot bullpens are.

http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/2014/02/the-top-five-tribe-bullpens-of-the-last-20-years/

my god. so many of those guys totally fell off a cliff. raffy left, sipp, cabrera, and to a lesser extent pestano.

i still contend the 2007 pen was overrated to a degree because the starting pitching was so solid that year, that the indians were often getting 6+ from the starters and heading into the 7th with a lead. then the raffys sprinkled in with whoever else needed to get an out would hand it over to borowski in the 9th for the real fun.

Indians are 4-1 so far a Cactus League play with quite a few guys that I have never have even heard of but they are also playing teams with guys that I have never heard of. I mean could this be the year:yay2:

Vinnie pitched a good inning yesterday. Hopefully, that is a good sign even if it is only one inning. He could really help the bullpen at the backend.

This certainly does not sound very unreasonable to me. If it it is true, I have no idea what the Indians are waiting on.

i suspect these numbers aren't telling the whole story. my guess is that he wants 3 years, $60 million, starting in 2014, thereby allowing him to immediately cash in and forego his arbitration year, and still be able to sign one more 4-5 year deal when this contract is up.

$15-20M/per is a lot of money for a guy who has had a fairly up-and-down career. Yeah, he was pretty good last year. But he followed up his previous good year by laying an enormous turd in 2012.
Ordinarily I don't follow a ton of baseball besides the Indians and the AL and NL Central (and whoever is on my fantasy team, which this year looks like I won't have one) but I am going to be really, really, really interested to see how Ubaldo does in Baltimore, because it's much the same thing. Maybe Calloway is a miracle worker, becuase I could see Masterson hitting the turd salad again if he left too.

How much do you pay your future closer? At some point in a 4 year deal, I think that's what you're gonna have.
