Cleveland Indians Thread of Malaise (2014 Season)

it will be interesting to see who gets the fifth starting role Tomlin or Carlos. The one who does not get it will probably go into long relief and I think Tomlin might be better suited for that role plus the fact when hitters see him for a third time he tends to get shellacked but With the amount of pitches that Carlos throws he never gets to see hitters for a third time. Have Tomlin pitch the first five innings and then bring in Carlos for the last three or four. That probably would be the best option. Acab started out like a house of fire lassies also and that really melted the last couple months. I do not know if Sellers will make the 25 man roster even though he is supposed to be a very good infielder. If he made it I have no idea what they would do with Aviles.
OT, hope you did not get too chilly at the game.

Almost had to change out of my shorts and t-shirt at sunset ....

I never knew how much players made in the minor leagues compared to the major leagues where the minimum salary is $500,000 but in this article by Terry Pluto using Carson as the example cleared things up. Interesting.
Let's say Carson is paid $15,000 a month for five months. That's $75,000, still good money. It's why Carson keeps playing, even at the age of 32. He has only 177 major-league at-bats in 12 pro seasons. But he was promoted to the Tribe last September, and received about $75,000 for a month's work.

6. Now you see why a lot of guys stick around in Class AAA. The money can be good, with a real bonus if the big leagues call even for a few weeks. The Tribe has a 33-year-old catcher in camp named Luke Carlin. He's in his 13th pro year. He has played 56 big-league games, eight years in Class AAA.

7. But you want to play in Class AAA. Below that, no money. Players in Class A and Class AA will make between $1,200 and $2,000 a month during the season.

It gets complicated, but a player receives at least $82 a day when he comes from the minor-league camp to the big leagues. Basically, there is extra cash the longer you last in camp, starting with a base of $291 a week and then other payments on top of that. Also, players do eat two meals a day at the park, and the food is excellent.

So Elliot Johnson, Murphy/Raburn, and Aviles get 3 bench spots. Chisenhall/Santana I guess takes up one more? Giambi? An extra reliever?
I think Chis gets sent down. Francona does not want him to sit on the bench. Elliot Johnson, Murphy, Rayburn, and Aviles will be the Goon squad. JG will start out the season on the minor league disabled list. I have no idea what they are going to do with their pitching since Tomlin seems like he has made the 5 man rotation and Carlos is out of options. Maybe he becomes the long relief guy.

Nyjer Morgan makes the team...Bourn undoubtedly to the DL. Again. I like Bourn, but I am starting to think that was wasted money.
Well if his batting average does not improved by 30 points from last season I will agree with you that is if he stays off of the DL. I am also interested in seeing how Kennedy performs this season because he has not had while at all in spring training and he got a pretty nice deal this off-season.

Honestly, the hamstring worries me quite a bit, good move to get it all the way healthy, he needs his legs to succeed. His batting average last year while disappointing, I'm assuming he's not gonna get his hand stepped on again hopefully.

So it looks like 12 position players and 13 pitchers to start off after Bauer and Lee are back to Columbus.

OF: Raburn, Murphy, Morgan, Brantley

IF: Chisenhall, Cabrera, Kipnis, Swisher, Aviles, Johnson, Santana

C: Gomes

SP: Masterson, McAllister, Kluber, Salazar, Carrasco/Tomlin

RP: Tomlin/Carrasco, Allen, Axford, Outman, Pestano, Scrabble, Shaw...Wood?

I like Would because he can really bring the heat.

This is just a boner thought, which I commonly have these days, but I do not understand why they do not use more guys in multiple positions. A good example would be to put Chis out in RF and see if he can play that position. Shit the way Kennedy is hitting this spring they might need a left-handed bat out there. I cannot believe it is that difficult to convert a major league infielder into a major-league outfielder. Swisher can play RF but Lonnie could not. That makes absolutely no sense.

The idea that he's a "major league infielder" is iffy at best.

Switching to OF is not as easy as it seems. A lot of defending out there is instincts. You have to be able to read the ball off the bat, figure out trajectories, etc...
