Cleveland Indians (official 2012 season)

You mean you would rather the Tribe had signed another veteran infielder? Somebody who might be better than, say, Louis Valbuena?

Free agent shortstop Omar Vizquel has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, his agent Adam Katz confirmed to ESPN.com.
Vizquel is joining the Blue Jays on a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training camp, according to a league source. Vizquel is expected to compete with Mike McCoy and Luis Valbuena for a utility infield job in Toronto.

decent minor league deal here, could have a bounce back year.

The Indians announced that they signed reliever Dan Wheeler to a minor league contract. Diamond Sports Management represents the right-hander.

Wheeler, 34, posted a 4.38 ERA with 7.1 K/9, 1.5 BB/9 and a 32.0% ground ball rate in 49 1/3 innings for the Red Sox in 2011. Boston declined its option on Wheeler after the season, but did offer arbitration. Wheeler, who earned $3MM in 2011, declined in a decision that likely cost him guaranteed money. Wheeler has a 3.88 ERA with 7.9 K/9, 2.7 BB/9 and a 35.7% ground ball rate in his 12-year MLB career.

As Alex Speier of WEEI.com points out on Twitter, the Red Sox won't get a compensatory draft pick for losing Wheeler, since he didn't sign a Major League deal.

The Clippers have been very good the last couple years, and will be VERY good in the upcoming years as well
The purpose of a farm system is to develop players who can some day contribute in the major leagues. The Indians are signing bad arm pitchers and softball hitters that will help the Clippers but will never help the Indians:(

Unfotunately, it's been like this for the past few years.

Valbuena good as a Clipper, turrible as an Indian

Well, we got our right-handed power hitter so here we go.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Indians acquired right-handed hitting Russ Canzler from Tampa Bay for cash.

Canzler, 25, was the International League's MVP last year at Class AAA Durham. He hit .314 (149-for-4784) with 40 doubles, four triples, eight homers and 83 RBI in 131 games. Canzler, 6-2 and 215 pounds, played 41 games in right field, 33 games in left, 40 games at third and 17 at first.

He had a OPS of .931 for the season and 1.034 in the second half. Canzler hit .356 (63-for-177) with 17 doubles, eight homers and 30 RBI in 47 games after the Class AAA All-Star break.

Ah, now Canzler is the type of guy they should be taking fliers on. Most likely he's another Jason DuBois, but at least there's some upside that Lugo doesn't bring (besides being Hispanic and roguish).

Indians Prospect Insider on Canzler:

Canzler was originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 30th round of the 2004 Draft out of Hazleton Area High School (PA). After a seven year minor league career with the Cubs he signed with the Rays last offseason as a free agent. For his minor league career he is a .280 hitter (698-for-2490) with 172 doubles, 23 triples, 84 homer and 405 RBI in 738 games.

Canzler is a depth option and has some potential as a corner utility player. While his 2011 season and MVP are nice to see, they mean very little as he is not valued highly in the industry. His defense is questionable, and the fact the Cubs let him go as a free agent last year and now the Rays let him go for only cash show how limited his future may be. He could be a late bloomer like a Casey Blake, or just another defensive challenged offensive player stuck in Triple-A like Jordan Brown.

Canzler has all three of his options remaining, so he should provide depth at several positions this year at Triple-A and in the big leagues, and he could end up being a good buy low pickup for the Indians. With that in mind, even with his impressive performance the past two years expectations should be tempered and he should be viewed nothing more than a depth option until he shows otherwise.
