Ive got mixed feelings about Mejia, could he end up great? Yea.....but I get the feeling hes the type of guy who lights the world on fire in the minors but ends up just average at the ML Level (as @NFBuck said above) could be wrong, but just giving him up here and nothing else to get a ace relieve and another solid reliever, who both come with some years of control is a big win.

Hand is still under control for 2 years after this. So he helps ease the possible loss of both Miller and Allen.

Climber isnt even eligible for arbitration until after the 2020 season, so he will be around awhile
Aside from that crazy hit streak in Akron a couple of years ago, his numbers in the minors have been fairly "meh" for a supposed top-25 prospect.

I see a lot of "offensive catchers are hard to come by" talk in other places in RE:Mejia

Thing is i'd be very shocked if he stays at catcher (Ala Carlos Santana)

especially now in San Diego where they already have Austin Hedges , who is crap offensively but regarded as one of the best defensive catchers in baseball.

You always go for the "sure" thing in the trade market, I guess nothing is really for sure.....but Hand is a well proven high level ML reliever and Climber has held his own so far in his first year at the ML Level. Mejia is a crap shoot prospect.

Since last June he's only had one month with an OBP over .300

Positionless player, Padres playing him at C so they don't care about defense. He's a little tyke that I can't imagine will ever be a major power hitter consistently. I'll take the young controllable bullpen arms. Three All Star's in the pen now...

You can throw Allen in the 9th, Miller in the 8th, Hand in the 7th and still have Olson who can now pitch just to lefties, Cimber, Perez to pitch situationally. Not to mention Bieber will likely be in the pen for the playoffs.

Padres wont play him at C. They have Hedges, who as said is noteably shitty offensively but highly regarded as one of the best defensive catchers in baseball. Not like they can play Hedges at another position, theyll keep him behind the plate for his defensive prowess. Bet Mejia ends up at 3B or OF.

I dont think roles will be much of a thing in the Pen now, see Tito going all match up based instead of the traditional Setup/Closer roles.

If Miller comes back near form (No reason to rush him) and Hand retains form, that will be a lethal combo come October.

I'm pretty sure they've noted already that the plan is for Mejia to play catcher?

I remember Mejia stating he would not play outfield also. He's played 1 game at 3B in his minor league career, so I don't see that being a realistic option with him being in the majors soon.

From the Padres' beat writer; "Mejia, a 22-year-old catcher, has posted a .279/.328/.426 slash line with Triple-A Columbus this season. He's viewed by some as an outfielder in the long term, but San Diego plans to continue to develop him behind the plate."

Oh I dont doubt theyll give him a shot at catcher, I doubt it sticks for too long though, could be wrong as i'm no expert of course but we will see.

do not understand why Allen was sent down and the Indians are bringing up Melky and Diaz… I have no idea who is going to play CF…Naquin is for crap and Davis cannot play every game. I have no idea what they had in mind for RF except for Guyer and Melky splitting time but that is crap also. Maybe they will move Kippy out there and let Gonzales play second/third or Diaz play third and move José. The OF is shambles except for Brantley and the problem with him is he has no power. Something needs to happen.
