Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

Let me just say this: fuck Kelly Olynyk in the pooper with a rusty Garden Weasel.

So would now be a bad time to mention Andrew Wiggins was named NBA Rookie of the Year today?

As somebody who was not in favor of the trade and thought it was a huge overpayment...

A lot of people were quick to dismiss Kevin Love as somebody who put up big stats as the go-to guy on a bad team? What's to say Andrew Wiggins isn't the same thing? Does anybody think he's a ROY contender in Cleveland?

Don't disagree.

Just thought it was so very Cleveland of how the guy they got is now injured for the playoff run and the guy they gave up is the Rookie of the Year after averaging 36 minutes in 82 games.

For the record, I was for the trade, and figured Love would die of Ebola around Christmas.

I wonder what this will be called in the long chapter of bad Cleveland history. The Injury?

That said, fuck Olynyk. There's a difference between physical play and then intentionally causing a season ending injury which is beyond pathetic. No sympathy from me should something tragic befall him.

concurrently, varejao will be off the books after next season, so, that will be $9 million, not in cap, but in reduction of luxury taxes being paid. The Cavs will also have the MLE as well to use this offseason. they'll have plenty of options to add pieces.

Remember that lovely extension he signed? Just pulled up the article about it and is signed through 2018 (but that last year is non-guaranteed). So he is on the books for at least another 2 years. Also, under new bargaining agreement, teams in luxury tax hell do not get MLE.

Yeah, Wiggins just wouldn’t fit on this team. He is a slasher not a shooter which would add another player that needs the ball. Love fit a big need in a stretch 4, as long as he comes back next year then the Wiggins trade is what it is.

with Love getting the surgery now, that makes me think he won't be returning to Cleveland after this season.

Why? Cuz the national media thinks so? Love doesn’t talk to the media about this, so in the absent of that the media will go with what makes the best story… ie Love leaving. Like I said previously… Love said he would be the janitor if it brought him a championship. That was before the season. He got a taste for the playoffs and he was fitting in with the Cavs finally. Unless he can go to a contender (find me one with cap space for him???) he is stupid if he doesn’t come back for one more year to #1 try to win a championship and #2 to cash in on the cap explosion after next season to make even more serious bank.

I think this injury makes it MORE likely he comes back next season, as it didn’t allow him to be the goat this playoffs where it could have pushed him out the door. Now the last thing in his mind is he was having fun and he was an important part in those playoff games.

I agree. I don't think Love would want to go out like this regardless how the playoffs finish for the Cavs. I think he'll end up signing a 1 year deal probably with a couple player option years tacked on the end similar to what Lebron signed this year. I've never heard Love say anything that made me think he was gone after 1 year. Hopefully they keep him on the bench and engaged for the remainder of the playoffs.

I wasn't a fan of the trade when they made it, but the more I thought about it and read about it they had to make the deal. Part of the deal they made with Lebron to get him to come back was that they would trade for Love. Sure they might have been able to hold out and give up less to get Love closer to the deadline, but Lebron didn't want to play with Wiggins. I'd love for someone to explain to me what the lineup looks like with Wiggins and without Love knowing that Lebron didn't want to play the whole season at PF. Now that we're in the playoffs I'm sure Lebron will be willing to do whatever he has to in order to give the Cavs the best chance to win, but 82 games getting beat on by PF's would have worn him out.

When they made the deal for Love Bennett had been playing well in summer league and Wiggins was possibly the best wing to come into the league in several years. Wiggins looks like he is going to pan out, but Bennett would have destroyed all value in the first month of the season. Waiters didn't do anything to help his value and I'm amazed Griffin got what he got for him. For the sake of argument lets say the Wolves took Waiters, Bennett, and a pick for Love. That leaves the Cavs with Wiggins, Delly, Miller, Jones, and Harris to play the 2. There is nobody on that list that you could trade to get guys like Smith, Shump, and Mozzie other than Wiggins.

Lets say they don't trade for Love at all. You still have Waiters to make a deal with, but you need a PF that can stretch the floor. Maybe you find a stretch 4 (not Love) for Waiters and still have 2 first round picks to move for Mozzie. In that case your lineup is Kyrie, Wiggins, Lebron, mythical stretch 4, and Mozzie. Wiggins is basically Shump on D, better at going to the hoop, but less of a shooter and you don't have JR Smith to knock down shots. Who knows if Wiggins develops a good 3 stroke in the next few years, but you're better off with someone in his prime like Love.

If we're looking 3-5 years down the line Wiggins would be a better option when Lebron is 33-35 and ends up being more of a stretch 4 than a SF, but he wasn't waiting 3 years for Wiggins to develop. When you look at the Love trade in terms of Lebron and Love for Wiggins, Bennett, and a pick it is a deal that had to be made. Now it's on Lebron to sell Love on staying with the Cavs long term and if you look at everything he's said about Love for pretty much the last month that's what he's trying to do. Hopefully Love spends his whole recovery working on his catch and shoot/corner 3 knowing that 60-70% of his looks will be coming from outside.
