Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

Sending Delly to D-League seems a bit harsh... he's a role player at best, but they made it that far in large part due to his scrappiness. He played a big part getting as far as this team did. Keep him on the cheap if possible.
JR was crap in the Finals, but he also played out of his mind a few games prior to that. I'd keep him as a shooter off the bench unless there's some attractive trade offers. We got defenders off the bench in spades, so he currently offers something unique.
Miller, Marion, Jones, Haywood, and Perkins were all effectively useless imo.
I love Varejao but at what point is the combo of age and perpetual injury enough? If we're going to keep some guys just for locker room leadership, he'd be my first choice -- before any of the dross directly above.

He is scrappy...but he has to learn to play effective pro basketball. He's not going to be giving Rudy effort until he collapses on defense over 100 games (including playoffs). He needs to learn things like when to shoot, where to drive, etc. So he can be effective as a 10 min/game sub. Sending him to the d league isn't an indictment...I think Harris spent some time there and I am pretty high on him

A lot of you seem to be turning on Delly pretty fast:frown: I will admit that the guy has some pretty significant offensive limitations but you cannot question the guys effort and he played defense against the "MVP" probably better than any other Cavalier on the roster. He deserves a place on the roster but his minutes should be limited to blowouts.

I'm not turning on him at all...quite the opposite, I'm thinking about him long term. I don't want him to be a guy that the media latches onto for a week and then he falls off a cliff and is out of the league in 2 years. Why put him on the roster but anchor him to the end of the bench? I'd send him somewhere that he can play significantly for a few months until he can become a regular rotation guy.

I see what you are saying and I sort of agree with you but guys who have spent 2 years in the league usually do not get sent back to the D leagues. Plus, I have not read this entire thread but other guys besides yourself had some pretty negative things to say about him which is extremely disappointing after they love the way he played in a couple of the other games.

By the way, Harris play that Virginia and I really likeded him when he was there. Very good defensive player and just needs to improve his outside shooting and I think you will start seeing minutes in the NBA.. It is interesting because some of the mocks that I have looked at shows the Cavaliers taking another guy from Virginia this coming draft but I believe that they have to go PG unless they can get one in free agency or via some sort of trade.

Fair enough, play time is important even if you just want a player to maintain their current level.
Currently I see him as Kyrie's primary backup... and given injury issues and general irrelevance of regular season (just make .500 and you're in the playoffs), would it be terrible if Kyrie's minutes get cut significantly and Delly is getting 15-20/game?

That would be ideal...as long as he can put in consistently effective minutes. I guess the question is, what is the real Dellie as he currently sits...the 20 point Dellie or the 20% shooting Dellie? Its hard to keep a guard on the floor that can't shoot and can't drive and create, no matter how good they are on D. If he can hone his game with significant minutes in the regular season, great. I just don't want to see him look like a liability for a week or two and then ride the pine...that doesn't do him or the team any good.

Perkins had to be the worst signing of the year. Other than Perkins, Marion and Haywood, I hope we can bring everyone else back.

Starters: Irving, Shump, Lebron, Love, Mozzy
Backups: PG Needed, Smith, SF Needed, TT, Varejao
Bench: Delly, Miller, Jones, Harris

I think our biggest needs are backups for Kyrie and LeBron.
Delly is staying...You don't get the arena chanting your name in the finals, then get sent to the D-league.
As someone else said, if another team offers him more than 2-3M...let him walk. Otherwise bring him back.
Delly has great defense and plays well with Mozzy and TT when rolling to the basket. Good enough, for 3rd string.

Smith is my main concern to resign, he is going to opt out, and another team will force us to overpay to keep him.
Also, we absolutely need to find a good backup for Kyrie. That should be our biggest priority.

I overstated my position most likely but I just feel Love will head elsewhere. I never felt he was truly invested beyond a year here unless he got a title.

As to the rest: I forget we even had Haywood and Marion on the bench, so not upset there. Miller is whatever to me and Jones choked when we needed him. The big thing to me is getting Love back. Mozie, Smith, Shumpert, and Delly are outstanding role players but they are really just that. I'm not saying anything novel here but how anyone thought we could beat GS without Irving and Love is beyond me. We get them both back healthy and with Andy...the Cavs will be the team to beat.

Love will be back unless LeBron doesn't want him to be a part of the team moving forward. That's a real possibility, but if he leaves it won't be on his own terms.

A lot of mock drafts have the Cavs taking Tyus Jones in the first round, and I think he's exactly what they need at the backup PG spot. I think the biggest concern on the team is Varejao. Re-signing him to that contract was by far the worst move Griffin has made as GM. Dumping him off on another team is the best possible move the Cavs can make at this point. I think he's going to be awful on both ends of the floor, no matter how many minutes he plays. The Cavs are better off with a young big man who has the potential to develop into something. Another thing to figure out: How are Mozgov, Thompson, and Love going to share the floor? I think you make Thompson your 6th man again, and maybe play he and Love in crunch time. The Cavs haven't played particularly high quality basketball with both of them on the floor, but I still think it's your best bet.

Thompson is no better than a sixth man until he becomes a more assertive scorer.
