Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

I am sorry but I do not trust Kevin Love enough to assume he will opt out and still return. This would not be the first time we thought we were getting someone to re-sign only to be burned (see Boozer, see LeBron). Love has been rumored forever to want to go back to LA, and even though Cavs may be good, one year of not winning it all and he very well could decide to run to LA and still join a contender killing 2 birds with one stone.

W/o a commitment to opt in at least for an extra year, you cannot justify giving up Wiggins. Giving up Wiggins, Bennett, and picks for a one year rental of Love is exactly the kind of crap that happens to a Cleveland team.

This is different than the Boozer situation. At that time, Utah could pay Boozer more than the Cavs. That is not the case in Love's situation.

Plus, Love would get nailed in the press nationally. He has always said he wants to compete for titles and sick of losing. So leaving a team with LeBron for a worse situation will kill all endorsements and such he could get because he would be seen as a hipocrit nationally.

If K.Love is going to be a Free Agent next year...no matter what...The Cavs need to go after him then, as a Free Agent.

Why give up Wiggins, and Bennett (both have huge potential) and risk losing Love as a Free Agent.
Nobody thought LeBron was leaving Miami as a Free Agent...Anything can happen in Free Agency.
I would NOT risk losing Wiggins and losing Love for nothing. Its not worth it!

Bennett could be a great SF/PF backup to LeBron. If he can keep his weight down.
Wiggins could potentially be the next Kevin Durant. Locked in for 4 years on a rookie contract.
If the Cavs could somehow add another Center, this team has unbelievable long term potential.

I think LeBron locked himself in, with his Coming Home Letter. The Cavs need to think long term on this one.
If the Cavs can sign Love next year as a Free Agent, they could potentially keep Wiggins & Bennett.

That is how you build a "team" better than the San Antonio Spurs.
Ultimately Love isn't the ONLY option. If the Cavs lose out on Love they can still trade Wiggins and Bennett in the future for another star.

Ummm, no he won't. He won't sign an extension with ANYONE. It will cost him millions. He MUST opt out next year to get more money.

In a sign and trade he would have too and that's exactly what the Cavs need to demand if they are going to give up so much.

Edit to add: Looking at your other comments, I think you're giving Kevin Love too much credit in terms of thinking deeply about any potential future moves.

Not hardly. Its not deep thinking to realize that waiting a year to sign an extension nets you substantially more money.

The only way they can get Love is by trading for him. Whether between now and the trade deadline or a sign and trade next summer. The Cavs will be over the cap and the only way they can get Love is via a sign and trade. THEY CANNOT SIGN HIM OUTRIGHT! A sign and trade is a tricky situation. Minnesota holds ALL of the leverage there. Knowing the Cavs would not be able to sign him outright, they could insist on Wiggins again. Whereas a team like the Lakers would have more leverage since they can sign him outright (while not max) so they would have to give Minnesota less than the Cavs would.

While I am all for trying to get Love without trading Wiggins, you cannot wait for Love next summer. It is a different story if he is already on the Cavs next summer.

Even if it's not the same thing, it still holds true we got burned by Boozer.

Love could get nailed in the press, but if goes out West and joins another contender, he won't. Then he will have gotten to LA like he wanted and signed with a contender too. Howard is an example of someone who got over being drilled by the media, unless your name is LeBron your media attention subsides.

It should be simple, Love has to guarantee to opt in for one more year giving us 2 years guaranteed with him, then since the TV deals will likely make the salary cap much higher we can still offer him the full max more than anyone else and he will get a lot more.

W/o a guaranteed opt-in, we cannot afford that gamble. We are Cleveland, all people do here is leave.

We got burned by Boozer because his wife was a money hungry parasite and Paxson was a dumbass. AND it was the only time a player actually reneged on a 'wink wink' deal.

Love is only going to say "I will resign with you when I opt out" That is the best you are going to get. And 99.9% of the time that is normally gold. (the only time was Boozer) And it isn't like a contending LA team can sign him. The Clippers are maxed out too and the Lakers are not contenders. So don't let the only instance of that ever happening sour you on this type of deal. You just have to trust Love saying through back chanels "Yes, I will re-sign after next season".

Kevin Love will never agree to an extend and trade because it will cost him money in the long-term. It makes more sense financially to opt out after this season or opt in and cash in on an even bigger deal in 2016 free agency with the expected salary cap jump.

I like it

Corey Brewer is reportedly being included in a deal that would send Kevin Love to Cleveland.

This smells a lot more like a rumor than a report, but the reported deal would involve sending Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, and a 2018 first-round pick to Minnesota in exchange for Kevin Love and Corey Brewer. Wiggins can't be traded until August 23, so nothing is imminent, but Brewer would be a solid backup to LeBron James in Cleveland.
Related: Kevin Love, Anthony Bennett, Andrew Wiggins
