Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

People saying that Cleveland isn't a title contender are crazy IMO. They had the best record in the East when the conference was stronger with poorer support around LeBron.

I fully expect them to be a 55-60 win team next year.

Lot of variables in trying to project wins for this team next season...especially right now, as the roster isn't even set. The 2009/2010 Cavs teams didn't have as much raw talent, but they had a lot of chemistry, which is huge. It's looking like there are going to be a lot of new pieces this season, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if there are some struggles the first couple of months of the season. 50 wins would be a good starting point, but that can be adjusted based on whether or not Love is Cleveland bound. One thing LeBron has the ability to do is elevate the game of those around him. So, even if they don't get a Kevin Love, how much improvement can be expected out of guys like Bennett, Thompson, Waiters, Kyrie, etc.?

the other problem is that guys like waiters, irving, and bennett have never been in an nba offense like blatt's. byron scott just played playground ball and mike brown had no offensive system whatsoever. so, the learning curve for these guys may be steeper than normal. add to that guys like TT who has no basketball IQ whatsoever, and wiggins who is raw as it is, and there could be quite a few bumps in the road. with that being said, 50 wins should be a realistic goal if there are no major injuries, save for AV's inevitable bout on the IR.

all of this doesn't matter as everyone in the cavs organization has said they aren't trading wiggins. the whole wiggins trade deal was nothing but wishful thinking by the timberwolves, perpetuated by the dullards at ESPN that have really shown they have no clue about anything.

Of course everyone in the orgainization has said they aren't trading Wiggins...why would they not...not that I think we make a trade for him right now, but hes not under contract yet making him very easy to move...also it may depend on what LBJ wants or says...hes never been a huge personal guy before but maybe he wants more of a say this time around...so who knows if he prefers to play with KLove over Wiggins...I would love to be able to keep wiggins and add a KLove...I would much prefer to get rid of waiters and bring in a 3rd team with some future draft picks involved...I still prefer the wait and see approach and see how we are by the halfway point next year

I think Love has said that he'd extend to come to Cleveland, so it wouldn't be a one year rental.

As for putting Kyrie in a deal for Love, there's no way you trade one of the best young PGs in the league. Kyrie has had issues, but he's still very young. Part of his problem was probably feeling like he had to shoulder such a large scoring load on some really bad teams. Take that away and he should be able to really start to grow now. Poor PG play is one of the things that plagued the Heat the whole time LeBron was there and was a major reason (along with a terrible bench) that San Antonio beat the hell out of them in the finals.

I think we're going to see a whole new Kyrie this year. The guy hasn't been a great catch and shoot player, but there's no way that doesn't get better with LeBron and Wiggins sucking the defense into the paint. As tsteele316 said, there's no way Blatt's offense doesn't help this roster improve. The Spurs-like sharing the ball system is really going to improve this team. Individually San Antonio's pieces aren't great (Boris Diaw was cut by the Bobats), and most of them would be terrible in Mike Brown's isolation offense. The difference between that and Blatt is night and day.

honestly, minnesota dragging their feet and unreasonably demanding wiggins could end up burning them. i'll laugh my ass off if the cavs tell them thanks but no thanks if bennett's play carries over from summer league to the regular season and the cavs end up trading for deandre jordan or something like that instead, and loves walks and minny gets nothing.

DeAndre Jordan is the opposite of what they'd want because he'll just clog the lane. He'd be a nice piece on defense though.

This is the tally I have in my head.. so the cap gurus have work to do to get anywhere near $63M
James $21,050,000
Kyrie Irving $7,459,924
Tristan Thompson $5,421,233
Wiggins $4,592,200
Anderson Varejao $9,800,000
Matthew Dellavedova $816,482
Carrick Felix $816,482
Brendan Haywood $2,213,688
Joe Harris
Dwight Powell
Love $15,719,062
Anthony Bennett $5,563,920
Dion Waiters $4,062,000
Ray Allen $4,000,000
Mike Miller $4,000,000
TOTALS: $85,514,991

Fortunately many of these salaries would be traded, say $15M worth for Love. That'd put us around 70M. You've also got to keep in mind that if Miller and/or Allen come here, it's likely at a huge discount, and right now it looks like Miller is headed to Denver. That puts us closer to 64M. Haywood is likely traded before the deadline this year. The more interesting part of this scenario is next year where Love, Irving, and James would be set to make about $20M a piece.

The saving grace is that unlike many other owners, Dan Gilbert is willing to pay the tax to win. Say what you want about the guy, but at least he has an open checkbook. Miami wasn't even willing to do that for LeBron after two straight titles.

Mafia-- you don't have a banner.. but your facts aren't up to par either
There's not that many pieces in the entire puzzle..
Saying we'd just trade $15M away to get Love is more complicated than just anteing up Bennett & Waiters.. you need a f(x) of $5M more
But we'd still be at $76M after that trade
Irvings #s don't get up there (>$14M) until 2016
Love is only $16'ish the next couple years

AND you still have to have 12 guys on the roster
Gilbert would be willing to pay Luxury tax.. but you have to get over the cap the right way
You can't just take whoever you want.. pay 'em.. and pay the Luxury Tax

Looks like the Cavs offered Mike Miller, 2yrs, 5.5M
I hope they can sign him. He's is average on defense but deadly from the three. Also LeBron called him a hard worker and wants him on the Cavs.
Cavs will need knock down shooters from behind the arc in the playoffs.
Ray Allen is probably going to retire. He may be happy with his 3(?) rings already.

Tristan wouldn't have a place on this team if we signed Love. They play the same position and Tristan has too big a salary.
Glad JailBird re-signed with Miami. I didn't want that tattooed looking freak on the Cavs.

LeBron traded all of his buddies to win a championship. He's a champion, if anyone doesn't play at his level, they wont last long.
If Kyrie doesn't step it up, and show he can compete at a championship caliber, he will be on the trading block as quick as anyone else.

Tristan is an integral part of this team
Who would your subs be for LeBron and Love?
How is $5M for Tristan too big a salary
sheez
Did you guys watch the finals?
the bench was a huge difference

They're going to have to renegotiate Varejao's contract.. and add years

Do the Cavs have any official 'free agents' they can play contract games with?

If you are over the cap, do you still get any of those exceptions ($5M or $3M)?

Yep, Wiggins is certainly working on his offense. Looked really good tonight, albeit it is only summer league. If he continues improvement, his role will be in support and great defense, ala Scottie Pippen-ish. Hate to make that comparison but similar athleticism for sure.

If they get a bomber to add to this roster, we're in serious business.
