Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

You're not getting Love for nothing after the season. They'll trade him before the deadline unless they are kicking ass, which is doubtful in the West. I think most likely he ends up on the Warriors as they were close.

Really depends what the Wolves value Love to be. If the Cavs hold out I don't see the Wolves doing better than Waiters and Bennett plus a pick or two.

Honest question since I didn't catch many Cavs games last year...how have Bennett and Waiters played? I really didn't like the Bennett pick when they made it but I didn't know what their futures looked like.

Like buclife mentioned, Bennett had a terrible season for a #1 pick last year, but he was hurt during the off-season and some think he shouldn't been thrown in as early as he was. Some have already written him off as a draft bust (especially ESPN/national media), but I and some other Cavs fans have a lot of hope for him.

Opinions on Waiters are all over the place. Supposedly he gives no effort on defense, but then some say he was really starting to buy in at the end of last year. He is inconsistent, but he shows flashes of stardom here and there. Definitely some upside, but probably needs a consistent jumper. He'll can a 3 with a defender in his face one minute and miss a wide open jumper the next.

Since the Lebron announcement, I've had some new lines of thought coming to mind. One of those is this - who are going to be our rivals from the West that we hope to eventually battle in the finals. The Spurs may need to rebuild a bit soon, OKC should be up there if they don't lose anyone, but Golden State and the Clippers are the two teams that I could see taking over the West.

So, I'm kind of hoping that GS doesn't get Love, or that they have to sell the farm to get him. If they keep Thompson to go along with Love & Curry, that is some serious outside shooting.

Is Love going to re-sign an extension in Golden State? If GS is not sure, will they risk it by trading Thompson for a potential 1 year (or less) rental?
I believe yes. Firstly, he's a Cali guy and I think I've seen that if he had his choice he'd be with a team there. Secondly, he wants to play for a contender and they are definitely one if they can add Love. Lastly, I don't think they would be in negotiations for as long as they were if they didn't have some kind of assurances that he would sign an extension after the trade.

If he is willing to sign long term, that puts the Warriors on the same footing as the Cavs in terms of whether they believe they can go all in or not on trading for Love.

Now the Warriors and Cavs can go into a bidding war for Love. What package along with Thompson will the Warriors offer to the Wolves and will it trump a Bennet/Waiters/Pick package deal the Cavs can offer? If no, the Cavs hold the Wiggins card still.

I like where the Cavs are sitting to get Love. They just have to pay as little as possible for him

In guessing it's wiggins>Thompson>waiters/Bennett. But if it goes into the season and Bennett shows that he's much better than he showed last year then maybe they like that deal more than Thompson.

I can be a sucker for up and coming potential and am enamored right now about Wiggins, even though I've got no proof to back it up (even watched him suck it up in the tourney). Love is a triple double machine that compliments LBJ on the offensive end perfectly. Yet for some reason I'm convinced I wouldn't make the trade for Love that includes Wiggins.

Makes no sense to me.

I'd like to see how Bennett/Thompson/Waiters are this year before we get rid of them. Having a competent coach and a team that's actually capable of winning will definitely make a world of difference. I think Waiters and Bennett can stick around as spot-up shooters, and I'd be disappointed to see them go. Thompson doesn't really have a position on this team, especially when they have LeBron in the small-ball lineup. I think your best bet looks something like this:

Starters: Kyrie/Wiggins/LeBron/Love/Varejao
Backups: Waiters/Allen/??/Bennett/?? Need a Zeller-like player who can play a decent amount of minutes for the aging Varejao.
Bench: Dellavedova/Felix/Harris/Powell/Haywood

I'd love to give up Thompson and picks (even a ton of picks) for Love. In that case your crunch time roster looks something like this:

Kyrie/Allen/Wiggins/LeBron/Love

I personally think I would make that trade. In fact, I've said that I think the better trade is Irving for Love (I'm not sold that he will will be a great fit with LeBron). Now you're obviously making the trade sacrificing the potential of having a stud in 5 years, but since LeBron probably only has 5 years of elite play left you want to try to maximize as many chances at a championship in that time frame. And considering what you have (a decent SG in Waiters and no good backup PG), trading Wiggins would be the better choice probably. It really is a tough call though.

There's no way you get Love for Thompson and picks. I know Flip Saunders is an idiot, but he can't be that dumb. Can he? That would probably be the biggest steal in trade history. I think somebody would write a letter like Gilbert did last year: "I know that Minnesota has an owner, and is not owned by the rest of the league, but I don't give a fuck. That's a one sided trade."

No one is trading for Love unless they get an agreement from him he'll sign a deal
exceptions
those that are going all in for next years championship.. only

Net net.. Cavs are in the cat bird seat

I think Love has said that he'd extend to come to Cleveland, so it wouldn't be a one year rental.

As for putting Kyrie in a deal for Love, there's no way you trade one of the best young PGs in the league. Kyrie has had issues, but he's still very young. Part of his problem was probably feeling like he had to shoulder such a large scoring load on some really bad teams. Take that away and he should be able to really start to grow now. Poor PG play is one of the things that plagued the Heat the whole time LeBron was there and was a major reason (along with a terrible bench) that San Antonio beat the hell out of them in the finals.
