Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

There are two mid first round guys I would give up Tristen Thompson for, Rodney Hood from Duke and Cleanthony Early, from Wichita State.

I totally disagree... I would give up Tristen Thompson for a basket of basketballs...

But yeah, trading up from the 2nd round to the mid first round is always available due to cash strapped teams wanting out. Hopefully they can do it for the right player.

Guess I'm more concerned with the coach... cuz I don't think the current roster was bad enough for only 33 wins
so it tells me the proper coach will be more impactful on the W-L record than our #1 pick
Someone needs to be able to harness Irving or it won't matter who we add to the roster

I'm concerned with the coach too... but there are like a dozen names being thrown around and really... I would not mind an assistant coach who is ready to be head coach. But that isn't sexy. Add in getting shocked that we have the #1 pick??? Dang... my head is still in the clouds about that and can barely think about a head coach.

I like the look of Embiid, he looks very athletic and promising. That being said, if we have any concern of a plaguing injury, we should go to Wiggins. We cannot afford to take the next Greg Oden. It does seem common that big guys like that tend to get hurt a lot. Big Z, Yao, Dwight has been hurt a lot, Oden, Bynum etc.

I'm with you on this. It would be crazy to pass on Embiid if this was last year's draft class, but there is a prospect like Wiggins who could end up being a mega star. Don't get me wrong, I think it's smart to do a thorough eval on Embiid, but there is definitely a great alternative option if something doesn't check out.

Like most, I think Embiid is the best fit, if healthy. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that a Wiggins pick has a lil extra incentive. He and Bennett play on the Canadian team together. Maybe he could help salvage last year's bust.

Tristan Thompson is Canadian also. I wonder if he'll become a part of the national team.

I still have a lot of hope left for Anthony Bennett. It doesn't seem like many are giving him a chance, but he was at his HS prom about 2 years ago. There is definitely time left.

I too think it's ridiculous for everyone to write off Bennett. Although I wanted Olidipo, we had a young SG and PG already. MCW nobody thought that high of, so everyone is playing hindsight bias on that one. Noel hasn't touched the court yet, Len didn't do much.

Regardless though, Bennett still has time. No he likely won't amount to what you want out of the #1 pick but still. Look how far John Wall has come. Same with Harden. Yes Wall and Harden were better in year 1 still, yes Harden wasn't anywhere near a #1 pick, but it goes to show that you can start a little slow and still bust out and become something. I don't expect that kind of level from Bennett, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him get himself to a double double a night kinda guy.

All in all it feels nice. Seems like the Cavs can't really screw this up this time unless they try hard. This looks to be the best draft since LBJ, Wade, Melo etc. I think it's starting to seem clear that we as fans want Wiggins or Embiid the most.

I think the only way the Cavs screw this up is if they take Embiid and his back issues turn out to be chronic. That's why I'm against taking him--there simply is too much talent in this draft to risk coming up totally empty. Wiggins (or even Parker) are too good.

Bennett didn't really have a chance in his rookie year. He was coming off injury, missed all of summer and part of training camp IIRC, and was way out of shape. Give him a normal offseason this year and we'll see what he can bring. I wouldn't be shocked to see him in the talk for most improved or 6th man after next season.

Last years draft was so epicly bad it isn't really far to compare how the players turn out to pretty much any other year. At the time Bennett was seen as the only player that could really turn into a 20/20 type of player. In hindsight you draft Drummond and Olidipo the past 2 years, but then you probably aren't a lottery team this year.

Yeah, all the talk of winning the lottery 3 out of 4 years should come with an asterisk. Last year's draft was the worst I can remember by a large margin. Having the #1 pick last year was probably equal to being in the mid-lottery most years. That's not to say Bennett can't turn into a solid player, but there was nobody in that draft worthy of #1 any other year.

As for Drummond and Oladipo-- Drummond was seen as a huge project. I can't fault them passing on him. In fact, IIRC, I think most here were praying they didn't draft him, me included. Oladipo was never going to be drafted by the Cavs. And while I think he could be a very solid player, again, most years, he's probably going much lower than he ultimately did.
