Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

I like the look of Embiid, he looks very athletic and promising. That being said, if we have any concern of a plaguing injury, we should go to Wiggins. We cannot afford to take the next Greg Oden. It does seem common that big guys like that tend to get hurt a lot. Big Z, Yao, Dwight has been hurt a lot, Oden, Bynum etc.

Honestly I think all 3 will be pretty damn good in the NBA, and I could live having an all-star caliber guy like Parker or Wiggins even if Embiid went on to be one of the best centers in the game today. I learned my lesson when I kept saying Oden over Durant in 07.... lol

What part of Embiid's game will take time to develop? Could he come in right away and be distruptive on defense? I say yes. Could he foul too much? maybe... But he should be able to come in right away and play above average defense and you have to wait a couple of years before he becomes 1st team defense/defensive player of the year type?

Offense? He has a smooth stroke, so he should be able to hit 10-15 footers. He has moves with his back to the basket... so he should be an average offensive center comming out of the gate and take a few years before he can average 20+ a game.

IQ - Ok, I agree with you there. Could he be turnover prone? Could he foul too much? Could he be in the wrong position on defense at times?

So my thinking is he can come right out of the gate an average 10pts, 7-8 Rebounds and 2-3 blocks a game as a rookie. Oh drat... we might have to wait 2 years to see if he becomes a 20 pt 10 rebound 3-4 blocks a game type guy?

This guy improved dramatically in college over the first 2 months of playing in college. While he could be rough the first few months, by January/February this guy could be showing glimpses of greatness with a few bad games that we can chaulk up to a rookie learning the game.

Like I have said from day 1, get the best medical people on him and get a full report. If he checks out, you take him and forget it. His type does not grow on trees and immediately gives Kyrie and Dion driving room. Kyrie could average 3-4 assists to Embiid a night by just driving to the rim and then dumping of to Embiid for the dunk (or Kyrie gets alot more easy lanes to the basket since the help would have to stick with Embiid)

All three top guys have strenghts and weaknesses in their games which have been discussed in detail in this thread and other sites. This will come down to who is the best fit for the Cavs. I agree that selecting a big guy #1 overall tends to be a bit dicey based on recent selections. Let's say Embiid is given a clean bill of health and is 100%, he takes care of huge need in the middle. The more I read about these three, the more I feel Embiid is a better fit for the Cavs.

Embiid is clearly not a Yao, Z, Oden, Bynum type. As far as chronic injuries go, that's my only observation. He's not the classic big. He looks and moves like a 7 foot small forward, with the skills of a damn good center.

For some reason you mentioning that he looks like a 7 foot SF makes me think of his most realistic comp player... Kevin Garnett.

Yep, all 3 have weaknesses... and that is why Embiid is the clear choice. Wiggins needs work on ball handling and shooting. This team needs shooters (ball handling can be dismissed since Kyrie/Dion will do most of that). Parker can shoot, but his defense and body shape scare me. Yes he is the 'most NBA ready' but what does that mean really? To me that is NBA scout speak meaning he doesn't have much more room to grow. While Wiggins and Embiid might not be as good as Parker the first year. But if they both catch up to him within one year while showing flashes during their rookie year or being better by March... who cares if it took them a year?

I agree on Parker; I think he will be an All-Star caliber player, but I don't think he has the same ceiling as the other 2. Parker isn't going to play a lick of defense, but he's going to be able to fill it up right away and I'd be shocked if he wasn't the rookie with the highest PPG next year (especially if he falls, as expected, to Philly)

It really comes down to Wiggins & Embiid, I won't be upset with either to be honest. They both fill a huge hole (athletic SF who can run the court, attack the hoop, and defend or the modern era post presence). I think our team "needs" the post player more as Varejao hasn't stayed healthy and is 32 and the rest of our post is a gluttony of PF's (Hawes, Thompson, Zeller, Bennett, etc.)

This draft is deep; I feel we can get a strong SF in the early 2nd. I doubt KJ McDaniels from Clemson drops but if he does he'd be a great fit. Here is a mock draft site that lists some pretty solid talent deep into the draft

It would be great if Cleanthony Early drops into the early 2nd. Can score, play good defense, and handle the rock reasonably well.

The Cavs have the early 2nd round pick. There are always teams at the bottom of the draft that are willing to move their first for a high second and a future pick or cash to not have a guaranteed contract on the books. If there is a SF that the Cavs want in the last 10 picks of the first round I wouldn't be surprised to see them go get him. If they draft Embiid it will make me think that they know they are going to be able to sign or trade for a SF. If they don't think they are going to find an all-star SF elsewhere I would guess they'll take Wiggins and hope he turns into an MVP type player.

Guess I'm more concerned with the coach... cuz I don't think the current roster was bad enough for only 33 wins
so it tells me the proper coach will be more impactful on the W-L record than our #1 pick
Someone needs to be able to harness Irving or it won't matter who we add to the roster

Agree with you 110% NJ. Speaking for myself, after management re-hired Mike Brown last year, and even though we have a new GM this year, it's difficult to gauge. Now if I had to guess Gentry could be the front runner becasue of his past relationship with the Cavs GM but I haven't heard about an interview as of yet. I know Adrian Griffith has an interview today. But many of the guys mentioned with the exception of George Karl are all assistants so many are not known commodities.
