Cleveland Browns (Finally drafting Buckeyes)

After his latest injury, there are no doubts about it. I think I've seen others post here or elsewhere that no QB has come back from this and maybe no MLB pitcher? Even if he returns to pre-injury form, that's still nowhere near 2018-2020 Deshaun. It was clear how the team responded to a leader like Flacco and how the playcalling opened up. As a Browns fan, I cannot wait for Watson era to be over.

How the team responded? The crippling injuries to both the Oline and RB situation necessitated this offense slinging the rock far more than what it should have ever done. The playcalling "didn't open" up as a result of Flacco's play, it became more air-centric out of having little to no other consistent options. Then again, when you win, fans tend to forget the guy was averaging this 4th worst turnover ratio of his career along the way. And since Joe has been a INT machine his entire career, that should tend to give you a better idea of just how bad "fuck it, let's see what happens" that we witnessed. It's fun for a few games, but it isn't sustainable.

If Watson is able to be 85% of what he was against the Ravens, then the Browns should be in fine shape, Oline health permitting.

That said, it has been reasonable to suggest that the fate of the Watson era is tied closely with how Berry's job security is. Provided CLE keeps winning, it might not be *as* strong a tie as we may have believed.

Chubb went down in the 2nd game of the year...it was air-centric since that point on, of which they (Watson & Flacco) played about the same amount.

YPC for Watson - 10.6
YPC for Flacco - 13.1

That's a significant difference, especially given the substantial difference in playbook familiarity. And Joe certainly does throw more INTs, but given the lack of a consistent run game, like you noted, that offense really needed chunk plays since the sustained drives weren't happening enough. Flacco fit that mold better - and I won't argue that with a healthy offense that Watson may be a better fit than Flacco, assuming he can bounce back....which I still find doubtful since his play was sporadic at best pre-injury...we have no idea how he will look in 2024. They also seem doubtful on the impact Chubb could have in '24, so we may need a Flacco'esque save again.

At what point do you cut bait with Watson? Or does it really matter since they guaranteed all that money? They’re going to need someone else soon.

He's 2 years into a 5 year guaranteed contract of which they keep pushing the money back to future years. If they cut him they can't renegotiate anymore. At least we have our first round pick starting next year. In all honesty if Watson doesn't pan out they might as well start the tank over again and try to draft a new QB. The difference now for Watson compared to the previous two is rust isn't a valid excuse. Falcco showed that you can come into this offense and produce so Watson is out of excuses if he doesn't come out swinging next year. Maybe they can try to bring in Fields on a prove it deal after this season depending what happens to him.

Watson would account for around half of the cap next season if he were cut. This year it would be $200 mill, next season $136 mill, then a $72 mill dead cap hit in the final year. What a contract...

I'm pretty sure the blame goes to the person that can never get fired, but I'd love to know the though process behind the Watson deal. The Texans didn't want him, but we still gave up 3 first round picks and then some just for them to make the deal. He didn't want to come to Cleveland so we gave him the biggest guaranteed contract in NFL history knowing that he was likely going to be suspended for a big chunk of the first season. Both of those moves are dumb, but combined they are complete idiocy.

Think where this team would be right now if they had stuck with Baker for one more year so they didn't have to eat 10M just to get rid of him. Maybe he would have had a good season and you keep him, but if he didn't I bet they could have used one of those picks to get Fields from the Bears last year so they could have drafted Bryce Young.

I understand the Watson move... IF the braintrust believes, and obviously it did, that Watson was a top 10 QB.. maybe top 5
and the king's ransom that would be required to tear away a top 10.. which no one trades unless he has warts
and you don't believe you have a QB (Baker) that could get you to the Super Bowl... and the draft is still a crap shoot
Schlichter, McGwire, Leaf, Russell, Andre Ware, Akili Smith, Quinn, Leinhart, Vince Young, and even Vick.. all busts ..
Bryce Young ain't gettin you there... and he cost 2 firsts (2023-9th and 2024 #2), a 2nd plus DJ Moore who was a 1st rounder
You have to 1) be damn sure the QB in the draft is CJ Stroud and 2) that you can get into a position to be able to take him (which also costs a Kings ransom).. then you make the Watson move

The contract looked obscene but he's already the 7th...
Jalen Hurts is $51M a year and Eagles regret that one...
Russell Wilson's $49M a year and they cut him
