I would go after Cousins in FA first before I would try and trade for Smith and if a boiled down to having to trade for him I would only give Kansas City the last of my second round picks or possibly maybe even my third-round pick. Kansas City's future is sitting on the bench and I think that they would like some cap relief which the Browns can give them via a trade.Alex Smith is under contract for 2018, yes? So he would have to be acquired via trade?
IMO, if he could be had for a 2nd or 3rd rounder, you do it. That gives you a very good NFL QB to sit your rookie behind for a year or two to develop. If they could get Smith, a decent WR or two in FA, and draft a good RB, that offense could actually become quite competent in short order.
Kirk Cousins is going to get a top-3 QB contract from somebody. I dare anybody to tell me Kirk Cousins is a top-3 QB. That would be an ENORMOUS waste of cash for a guy approaching 30 with a 26-30-1 career record as a starting QB.I would go after Cousins in FA first before I would try and trade for Smith and if a boiled down to having to trade for him I would only give Kansas City the last of my second round picks or possibly maybe even my third-round pick. If the Browns could give Cousins they might not need to go after a QB in the first round because of Cousins age. If they have to trade for Smith, I think that means that they have to draft a QB at #1 or #4 because of Smith's age.
I have.heard much with regard to what they are going to do in free agency but I think maybe one quality WR would be enough and then sign a few more quality guys on defense.
The problem is, there is a cliff-like dropoff somewhere in the 9-12 range of QBs, and he is at the bottom of that range. Guys above him are not available. Ergo, he profits handsomely. He is not a top 3 QB. He is not worth as much as Detroit paid Stafford. And yet, there are 18-20 teams that would pay out the cock for him in a heartbeat.Kirk Cousins is going to get a top-3 QB contract from somebody. I dare anybody to tell me Kirk Cousins is a top-3 QB. So I take it you would go after Smith? I see your point regarding Cousins but I do not think that the record of a team is always a good indicator of just the QB performance.Kirk Cousins is going to get a top-3 QB contract from somebody. He's not a bad QB by any means, but his bloated contract is going to kill somebody. He could easily be on his way to >$25M/per. Conversely, I think Alex Smith is due <12M, or half the price.
It's crazy. I think he's a solid QB, but he has some awfully hollow stats for somebody about to get an enormous contract. I was so relieved when the Niners traded for Garoppolo, because I was sure they were gonna go after Cousins. The problem is, there is a cliff-like dropoff somewhere in the 9-12 range of QBs, and he is at the bottom of that range. Between him and Cousins? Absolutely. Frankly, I don't think they're that far apart as a player. Cousins just benefits statistically playing in a pass happy offense. Hell, even looking at their 2017 stats, I'd argue Smith had the better year.So I take it you would go after Smith? Problem is, if you don't get a QB this year, 2019 looks like a horror-show for QBs.I'm worried the Clowns will overpay for a 1 year rental in Alex Smith and then be back in the same situation in 2019....
I don't want to overpay Cousins either....I don't see a simple answer and I don't want any of the 3 between Darnold, Rosen or the Wyoming QB whatever his name is....Two of them are California/warm weather guys and the other played in a lesser conference and didn't exactly light it up anyway.
To be honest, if they can't do either one (Smith or Cousins), draft the best player at 1, get Barkley at 4 and play Kizer/Kessler another year and start again in 2019....I'm not sure that's a bad course since this is still year 1 of a rebuild that hasn't really started yet.....
And then he’d get a staph infection in the stumpHis knee would melt off as soon as he touched down at Hopkins.
