Except those 16 units would have otherwise sat in storage if not used. There is no either or scenario here.

And those units are perishable. They HAVE to be used this year. I think that's the part that's being missed. They weren't going to pay a FA that money, but it still had to be spent somewhere.

forget where it comes from

you had 16 units available that you chose to use for buying a 2nd round pick next year

You now have 16 less units to do something else with so you have made a choice

it doesn't matter if you still have plenty left over, you don't have those 16 units

so if the 2nd round pick turns out to have less value than say another player you could have bought with those 16 units then you made a bad choice. If it has more value you made a good one.
I think the argument here is that the opportunity cost was between the second round pick and idle cash. Given that cap space is to some degree a use it or lose it proposition, the cost of the idle cash is higher than lost interest (or whatever) but ultimately it depends what they do with it, that's true but it's clear that the Browns are doing everything they can to give themselves assets that are not salary cap constrained, because that's where the real scarcity ultimately will be going forward.

The units would have gone unused so they aren't "out" something they wouldn't have used anyway. If they planned on using them on someone else and now can't because they opted to use them on Osweiler, it would be different.

If I lended you a shovel during the winter because I had no plans to dig holes in frozen ground, I'd wait to dig in the spring...and I get that shovel back from you before I was going to dig, was I really ever without the services of my shovel? It's also a plus that you pay me to use it when I don't need it. There aren't any jobs that aren't getting done without it. I still will have it when I need it.

If I pay you $100 bucks for the use of your shovel and you find out someone else would have paid you $500 then it was less than an optimal decision on your part.

fuck it, who cares? It's Ohio pro sports. I'd pay someone $500 and let them keep the shovel if they could bury the lot of them.

That's gonna take extra shovels. Anyone have an excavator?

Except he's got plenty of shovels. More than the neighbors could ever need.

Draft Wire‏ @TheDraftWire
Saints' entire 2014 NFL draft class now gone from roster

don't know why.. but this made me feel better for a fleeting moment.. since I have no faith in my Brownies ability to draft talent

If it wasn't for the saving grace that is Bito, my God that 14' class might rival 12 as the largest bust in our franchise history.

Sad thinking about how much obvious talent was there that we passed up.

two totally different circumstances. you're discussing an owner's bank account vs. an NFL football team leveraging cap space for assets. Letting the owner's cash sit and collect interest for him doesn't do anything to help the NFL team itself collect assets.
And no one gives a crap if a billionaire pays a guy 16m to sit on his ass.
Though I will say he could spend that money on better talent avalutors. Buying a second round pick means nothing if they draft like the browns typically do.
