Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

I just didn't think that a list of pro bowlers and future hall-of-famers really made the point that it would be a wasted pick.
Yeah, it doesn't seem to make sense. We'd all love to have Calvin Johnson or Andre Johnson, right? Then you look at their teams' respective success, and they don't seem like such great additions after all.

the list of top 10 drafted wr's that are under 6'1'' that didn't turn out to be busts is pretty short. add to that, the fact that watkins would be a #2 wr, in a system that doesn't rely heavily on that position as a pass target.

the prevailing rumors today are that cleveland wants to trade down to around #9 for another 2nd, and draft either gilbert or dennard, then use #26 for their qb. from there, they may try to slip into the late 1st to take sua filo. if they pull off such a trade, get those 3 guys tonight and still have a 2nd and 3rd tomorrow, they have done well for themselves.

I like this scenario. I like Dennard and his scrappy play. He'd be a hell of a boundary corner. At 26 they'd probably target Carr and I'd have zero issue with Filo. Provided Shwartz is healthy that'd be a hell of an Oline.

Your argument is flawed in the fact that the Browns and other teams as well have drafted the positions you've listed with minimal results the following season. Joe Thomas has been the best LT in the game since his rookie year - hasn't stopped this team from sucking.
I was just responding to "generic Browns fan" who has been saying for months that the team should draft Sammie Watkins because he will have an "instant impact" (undefined by said Browns fan) on this team. Every player and every situation is different. With that being said, my guess is that Sammie Watkins would have little or no instant impact on the Browns regardless of how good he turns out to be. Collecting a stable of top-flight WR's is not the recipe for success in the NFL.

No, they still do actually. Great players are almost always great additions. There are a lot of factors that contribute to overall team success: you take great players at the top when you get the chance, but you still have to hit on those later draft picks as well.

(Note: I don't necessarily consider Watkins as likely to end up on that list of great young NFL WRs, would prefer to get him mid-first than top-5 for my preferred team)

Apologies. I think we're on the same page here. Especially with the stable of WR's. That hasn't seemed to work out for either Detroit or Atlanta.

I would love to see Dennard...I have also seen them talking of trading down to get Evans, but I think Dennard would be better. At 26 they can likely get Carr. It depends on what teams are willing to trade to move up, there are rumors that the Rams want down but that people aren't offering enough...sure will be an interesting watch.

I still don't see any reason in spending the 26th pick on Carr when your 3rd rounder may net you Aaron Murray; this coming from a Carr fan as well.

I think there's a point where you buy on the QB's. I'd take any of the top 3 at 26. Maybe Carr in the 2nd. After that I'd take the one I have rated highest in the 3rd and maybe Boyd later.

I'm all for trading back and taking a top flight corner, or possibly Evans. Corner would make a large impact on this defense especially considering how heavily the nfl is predicated on successfully throwing the ball and stopping the forward pass. Not to mention, wide receivers are aplenty in this draft and you can get a talent #2 possibly into the 3-4 round.

After sleeping on it and reading some things this morning I don't really mind what the Browns did. The Buffalo trade goes a long way to ease any issues with the picks the Browns made. The Bills are relying on two players with injury histories (Manual and Watkins) to stay healthy in order to not give the Browns a top 10 pick next year.

Did the Browns need to trade up from 9 to 8 to pick Gilbert? Don't know, but at least they didn't pull a Butch Davis and trade the second round pick to do it.

Do I think Manziel will be a star QB in the NFL? I don't, but plenty of people that know a lot more about it than I do think he will. I think he has a better shot than Weeden did. I think it would be in his best interest to backup Hoyer for a year and learn from a guy that learned from Brady. By all reports Manziel is a smart guy although his epic doucheyness might get in the way. As far as trading up to get him it sounds like the Eagles were working with the Vikes and Browns to trade down. I don't know if the Vikes offer was good enough to pull the trigger but the Browns offer was better. If the coaching staff thinks that Manziel will be a franchise QB I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Today the Browns need 2 of WR, OL, and ILB. If they can get Lee with the 2nd round pick I will be very happy. One thing we won't know until the season starts is the status of the injured guys the Browns took fliers on last year. Chris Faulk was getting pub similar to Greg Robinson before the season 2 years ago so I wouldn't be shocked to see him win the LG spot. Jamoris Slaughter was also a guy expected to be a higher pick until getting hurt so he could see some time at safety this year. The only thing we really need on D now is ILB. I still wouldn't mind if they threw a 6th or 7th round pick at Boyd if he's still there tomorrow.
