Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

Just a thought, but how epic would it have been (and fitting) to fly the homeless guy into NYC to make the Manziel pick for Cleveland?
It probably was the "homeless guy" who was in Columbus and some nice guy bought him a new pair of shoes and the next time the local news checked on the "homeless guy" he had sold the shoes or maybe it was the singing "homeless guy" who has fallen off the face of the earth. I will believe the story about the "homeless guy" when I hear from him or maybe that is a bad idea..

So, this is an unusual feeling. Day 1 of the draft is in the books and I actually think the clowns did pretty well for themselves.

- I like the Gilbert pick. I'm not sure about giving up a 3rd to move back up one spot for him, but with so many picks, I don't see it as a big deal. I kind of think 8 is a little high for either him or Dennard (obviously), but chances are he was gone shortly after 9. In some ways, I'd prefer Dennard's more aggressive style, but Gilbert seems like more of a "big play" corner to pair opposite Haden, and his coverage skills will be an asset in a blitz-heavy defense.

- I actually like Manziel at 22. Set aside the comedy aspect, I think it would have been a foolish risk at 4 or 9, but at 22 it gives you an exciting player who can actually make the clowns relevant. I can't say I'm exceptionally confident that his YOLO style of play will translate to the NFL. But his ceiling is as high/higher than any other QB in this draft. Yes, his floor is probably much lower. If nothing else, it'll be exciting. I just hope that Haslam doesn't butt his nose in and insist they play him straight away. Let Hoyer play this year as long as possible and ease him in. Rushing another QB along does nothing for anyone.

- Picking up Buffalo's #1 next year was a stroke of genius. That seriously might be the best draft day move they've made since the rebirth. It's not a comparison, but those great 90s Dallas teams were built by stockpiling a ton of high draft picks. It's just a matter of breaking the seemingly neverending string of picks that haven't panned out or didn't live up to expectation. Best case Buffalo continues being Buffalo and they fleeced them of a top-10 pick. Worst case, Buffalo finally stops being a 6-10 team and it's in the 16-24 range. Scenario one seems more likely. Either way, they gained another 1st to move down a few spots and still got a player they coveted.

Still a lot of drafting to go. I'm holding out some dim hope that Hyde ends up on Lake Erie, but there's a lot of buzz about him coming off the board early in the 2nd. I don't see the clowns taking him with their 1st pick today. I think they go WR, and I think it'll be Marquis Lee. Lee is more of a speedster and would pair well with Gordon and Cameron.

God help me, for the first time in YEARS, if not ever, I feel like this organization is heading in the right direction. But, I refuse to believe it til I see it.

They only gave up a 5th for Gilbert, it was the 3rd for Moneybadger. As I said in the other thread, I question the players, but the strategy was sound, and they raped Buffalo for a 1st and 4th next year.

"
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordoncould face a season-long suspension after a second failed drug test months ago, this time for marijuana, sources told ESPN's "Outside the Lines" on Friday.

Reached by phone Friday afternoon, Gordon said: "That's something you're going to have to talk to [agent] Drew Rosenhaus about. I really don't know anything about it."

Andrew Weber/USA TODAY SportsJosh Gordon could face a season-long suspension after a second failed drug test months ago, this time for marijuana, sources told "Outside the Lines."

Asked whether he planned an appeal of his suspension and test, Gordon said, "I'm going to have to find out about that later. You need to call Drew," before hanging up.

Rosenhaus declined to comment but said the information was "not true."

The 23-year-old Gordon was expected to the top target for Brian Hoyer or rookie quarterbackJohnny Manziel this upcoming season.

Gordon, who was suspended without pay for two games and two additional game checks for his first violation of the league's policy, led the Browns with 87 receptions and had nine touchdowns last season. He led the NFL with 1,646 receiving yards and became the first player with consecutive 200-yard receiving games.

He said last year's suspension was the result of using cough syrup that contained codeine -- a banned substance.

Two sources told "Outside the Lines" on Friday that Gordon's latest violation is the result of marijuana being found during a drug test. One source said that Gordon received a letter in early winter from a league physician stating he had failed a test. A second letter, informing Gordon that he faced a 16-game suspension but had the right to appeal, was sent in late April.

Gordon had drug-testing problems in college as well. He was dismissed from the team at Baylor after being suspended twice for marijuana use. He transferred to Utah but didn't play there after failing another drug test.

Gordon is considered the star on an offense that added Manziel on Thursday night with the 22nd selection in the first round of the draft.

Prior to the draft, Gordon pushed behind the scenes for the Browns to take Manziel.

"I think I was just a big fan of his overall game, his prowess on it," Gordon said Friday on "SVP & Russillo" on ESPN Radio, before OTL reported the substance abuse policy violation. "His outlook on it. His fire and ambition and will to win was greater than I think any other prospect in the draft.

"Despite all the mixed reviews and the media downsizing him, his perseverance seemed to be a lot greater than that. I saw something a lot deeper than just his talent that could take us to the next level."
