Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

I would be surprised but not shocked if the Browns took one of Robinson or Matthews if they are sitting there at #4. This will be especially true if they did not sign any offensive lineman in free agency.
This class is pretty deep when it comes to WRs and one can be had with the #26 pick.

The Cleveland Browns have a fundamental decision to make in the draft: Do they go best quarterback, or do they go best player?

The Browns released two quarterbacks in 34 minutes on Wednesday and have Brian Hoyer and Alex Tanney on the roster. That puts quarterback as a need. But it was a need before Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell were released. It has been a need for the Browns since the team returned to Cleveland in 1999.

The problem for the Browns is the top three quarterbacks in the draft -- Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater -- are not considered among the top 10 players. So if the Browns take one, they’ll be going against their stated philosophy of “best available player.”

If they go best available player, they could build around the quarterback, take one later in the draft and let him grow while Hoyer plays. Guessing which way the Browns go is guessing their entire approach to the draft.

In other words, I have no idea what they are going to do...

This again is why I say they go best player (Watkins or Clowney depending on what others do...I don't see them talking a tackle) and address QB through FA (Schaub) and later in the draft (Mettenberger, Murray or McCarron in the 4th) to go along with Hoyer. Lock down OG, RB and ILB (Mosley learning under Dansby?) with the first three picks after the one at #4 in whatever order based on who is available and then fill in the blanks (secondary for example) the rest of the draft. This draft is so deep I think they can get quality talent in rounds 3-5.

I really like the draft that you posted earlier but I am just not sure because both of the tackles are about the only sure thing. I question why you would take Clowney but not one of the tackles. I know that Clowney is probably also a not miss prospect but he is not really a position of need for the Browns. I believe that Robinson can also play LT and Joe Thomas is not getting any younger so he would be back up for that position down the road. If they took one of the two tackles, they can move Swartz to one of the guard positions. As I said, I would not be surprised if they took one of the tackles but I would not be shocked.

If we don't go Watkins at 4, I have no problem with them going with Jordan Matthews early in the 2nd. I think he'll go higher than expected; runs great routes, best hands in the draft (arguably), and speed was his only ? going into the draft and he put up a 4.40 40 I believe. Plus, I like any Vanderbilt kid not named Cutler.

*Also, if Carr is there at 26 that'd be a nice spot to groom him behind Hoyer. Let him sit a year and take it all in.

I just think best avilable still means best available unless at a position where we have two viable starters. I know Thomas isn't getting any younger and Schwartz hasn't exactly been a Pro Bowl RT but I just think there is time to develop other tackle prospects while those two hold down those spots. I think this front office is looking to make moves that are going to appease angry ticket holders and a new tackle at #4 doesn't sell a lot of tickets. Manziel, Clowney or Watkins would. I hadn't considered the option of moving Schwartz inside though...is that something being discussed?

I agree with going WR later (Matthews, Benjamin or maybe Abbrederis in the 3rd or 4th) if it's not going to be Watkins at #4. I also like Carr at #26 or with their 2nd if possible.

I have seen where moving Swartz to guard might be a better fit for him but I have not seen anyone from the Browns organization mention that so I guess take it FWIW because it is mostly speculation.. I guess my thinking with the tackles is that you have to get someone sooner or later and right now the Browns do not have any other tackles on their roster that are writing good. I know you mean about the Manziel, Clowney, and Watkins being more appealing to the fan base but Clowney might also bring back memories of Courtney Brown:) . With regards to Shanahan's blocking scheme, I guess you have to be more athletic to run it and quite a few people are questioning whether our guards are athletic enough to do that. However, the guy from UCLA would be a nice fit.

We have a RT prospect on roster in Fragel. While he might not grade out as a run blocker he's a fair bit more athletic than Schwartz and would probably hold his own against the speed rushers. ( looking right at Wake and his abuse last year).

I'd like me some Abbrederris in the 3rd or 4th. Smart, finds the holes in the zone and sure hands. Jerevicious/Brennan clone. Plus he's white - you know we have a great deal of luck with those white boy receivers. (If you can't find the humor in that, fuck off).

This is somewhat interesting. Hawkins just signed his offer sheet today so the five day clock starts ticking on the Bengals.

Ian Rapoport ‏ @ RapSheet 4m # Browns made it hard on # Bengals for cap purposes. $3.8M roster bonus counts this year. In all, $5.8M cap hit for Hawkins Year 1. $5M Year 2
Tha fuck? Am I missing something? That much money for Andrew Hawkins? You could probably find a UFA and wring similar production out of him...

I don't get offering Hawkins that much either but they must see something in him.

Revis' agent, Neil Schwartz, obviously has concrete proof that the Kraft family were responsible for the JFK assassination, Windows XP, the movie Gigli, and Kraft macaroni-n- cheese causing cancer, AIDS and breast reductions. He's a great player but he ain't worth that much in 2014.

I guess it's good he didn't have the recording of Haslam talking about how the rebate scam was good for the bottom line or the Browns would have trades a first round pick for Revis.
