I would have taken Boren over Stoney. He reminds me of Hillis without the big head. Might have been a better bet that a DT that sells pot outside of practice.

Has anyone see that guy play yet?

I think you have the wrong Boren in mind there... Or maybe I'm an idiot?

Both are simultaneously possible.

edit: Looks like Justin and Zach are both unavailable. So.... Beanie it is!

I think ignore is a strong word. There isn't a rush to fill every gap this season and spend all of our FA dollars. The Browns can and will be patient in the secondary based on their philosophy. We aren't a Super Bowl contender and we did a bang up job addressing the front 7 this off-season.

I expect they'll assess the safeties this year and make a move next off-season. Going into this free agency market and draft I was hoping they'd address it. After listening and reading about Horton's philosophy it makes sense.
plus Banner said that they had signed so many free agents and with this being the first year of a new coaching staff they did not want to bring in more guys because in addition to the free agents the rookies and second-year guys all are having to learn a new system.

The other piece is they will know what kind of pressure they are able to apply in 2014 based on 2013 defensive results. If our front 7 performs well, it puts less importance on a top dollar safety. If our guys are unable to apply pressure, maybe you need to spend extra money to acquire a guy who has elite ability.

But again, in the zone blitz scheme we are about to see, it's all about corners keeping receivers in front of them and making sure tackles, and for safeties to not get beat over the top. You also need a blitzing/run support safety which we have in Ward, so as bad as the roster looks, I don't think Horton is losing much sleep. Depth is obviously a big concern, but I think in terms of starters they feel comfortable.

You're definitely seeing a shift in the NFL of roster personnel based on 3-4 or 4-3 scheme. A lot of 3-4 teams are letting top flight safeties and corners leave as they invest in the front seven. The Jets, 49'ers, and Ravens come immediately to mind in losing Revis, Goldson, and Ed Reed. Those guys all went to 4-3 rosters where you see more man coverage and dollars are spent more frequently on top flight DB's. I can't recall the last time the Patriots had an elite DB. The Steelers have had Palamalou but he's hurt 70% of the time and their defense doesn't fall off that much.

Anyways, let's just hope the front 7 does their job in applying pressure and makes the debate fairly irrelevant.

plus I know it was only an exhibition game last night but the defensive backfield did not seem to play badly at all.

Regarding the front seven
One guy's name who I did not hear called very much was Kruger which was sort of surprised. Robertson played extremely well and was in on quite a few tackles.

Kruger almost intercepted a pass, but he also looked lost a couple of times on fakes and rollouts. I think he'll be fine. Robertson might have had the best game last night.

If those aren't SuperBowl-esq numbers, then I don't know what are!

Yeah. If he can maintain that through the season with Benjamin taking back 1 punt for a TD every game the Browns are going to be hard to beat.

I don't want to get too excited, but so far this looks like the best team the Browns have put on the field since they came back. That isn't really saying much.

Too bad we won't have Gordon for two games.
