Which NFL Team Is Set to Make the Biggest Leap in 2013?

This year, that team will be the Cleveland Browns.

Now when Terry Pluto worries about something. I worry about it.
5. T.J. Ward is practicing, but won't start at free safety. That leaves undrafted free agent Josh Aubrey to start in his spot. Tashaun Gipson and Johnson Bademosi battle for the other safety spot. There is absolutely no depth here. The safety situation scares me.

6. OK, when it comes to safety, the Browns do have sixth rounder Jamoris Slaughter, who has been practicing some. But he's coming off Achilles surgery and has had some minor injuries in camp. Third-rounder Leon McFadden was supposed to compete for a starting cornerback spot, but he's been out with the groin injury. When he did practice, McFadden didn't show enough to challenge Skrine or Owens. Eventually, both rookies may earn playing time -- but that's not the case right now.

7. Trevin Wade also plays some cornerback, but I've never been very impressed with the second-year player.

He, like everyone here, has been leery of the secondary all offseason. It's the one area they really didn't address adequately, and the top area to go out and get someone next year. But for now...they gonna be lit up like Chris Perez.

While I agree with you, it's interesting that the above article has this in there which made me wonder....

Cleveland's back seven stood out in pass coverage; PFF graded them sixth best in the NFL at plus-30.9.

Now I don't know how PFF does their ratings, but I would assume it factored in issues like....teams beating us by 4 TD's and thus not needing to pass often.....so that kind of comment makes me curious if super-duper-secretly, the back 7 wasn't as bad as we thought?

I think the rankings might be skewed just a little bit because we were not playing against any NFL QB or wide receivers. Just ask Bernie Kozar and he really was correct despite what Peter King said.

Other thing to take into equation is Defensive Coordinator Ray Horton. He believes the secondary should be "plug and play". The front 7 will make or break any secondary in his eyes which is where he thinks the FO should spend money. If you can't get to the QB, it doesn't matter who is in your secondary.

It's a Pittsburgh philosophy as well. It lines up with why Cleveland was so stagnant in the DB market as well.

They're going to find out real fast we don't have Pittsburgh's front 7...at least back when they were elite, or even really good. Don't get me wrong, I think they will be much improved and a decent unit at creating pressure...but we need guys who can do more than bat down fluttering deep balls delivered late and pick off limp dick balls heaved up while the QB is getting hit...and other than Haden, I don't know that we have any more than that in pass coverage as it stands now. Ward and Bademosi are more run players and hard hitters than coverage guys.

Which fucked them when they got exposed by Aaron Rogers, a pretty good Oline
And the quick passing game of the Packers.

I agree, the front seven should be the priority - but to completely ignore the secondary (essentially what the front office did) is insanity.

I agree the front 7 is certainly not "elite" and not in Pitt's category when their front was really dominating.

That being said, I love, love, love our front 7. Certainly we could use some more depth at LB, no doubt about that, but otherwise I think it could get into that fringe Top 10 status in the league.

Taylor is a beast, we all know that. Rubin and Bryant create a mammoth DL that can not only rush the QB but hold up on the run and clog lanes. With young backups like Winn & Hughes to go with Kitchens, we've got talent, depth, and youth.

Our LB's are up in the air - how will Kruger perform, how will Sheard transition, will Robertson continue to grow, etc. But one thing you can't deny is that starting 4 has a lot of talent and I've been very happy to, A) See Sheard's comfort and progress at OLB and, B) hearing the high praise of Kruger from Joe Thomas. Now let's hope they stay healthy.

Maybe I'm drinking too much of the brown Kool Aid (should I double check what this is?) but this front 7 has me giddy.
