Dline is putting on some serious pressure.

If I have any one impression of this game... its that regardless of what Kruger or mingo do... this is generally a very good unit. (And I only mention those guys because they are new) but... maybe its familiarity but mingo gave us a barksdale update. That's for sure.

I didn't get to see this game, but I assume since it was pre-season, Bernie Kosar was involved..... How many fifths did it sound like he had already consumed?

Now now...(actually, about 20)...I met him in Canton though, he is much better in person. I just don't think he translates well to TV. He was delivering some zingers though, he isn't afraid to say when people do dumb shit on the field, which I very much like (he was all over the St. Louis receivers when they dropped 2 Bradford passes, and he was all over Cameron when he batted one up in the air).

Some nice things about last night:

-I love me some Dion Lewis. As I said before, he isn't an every down back, but he can be valuable for a few scat back carries and catching some passes in space. Good player, tough kid, gave good effort.

-Bess gives us a real threat on 3rd and short. Maybe they'll stop throwing the ball to fucking Marecic when Lewis and Bess are out there for those 4 yarders on 3rd and 2. Bess could really solidify the unit.

-Travis Benjamin is fast. I still don't know how well he can catch, but even if he is an Az Hakim type, he can really help the Browns. And watch out on any return.

-Receivers giving effort. Little going up and getting ball booted by Cameron was a play you wouldn't have seen from him in the past. There is hope that he has been taught about being a professional and that his effort will be high and his mental lapses will be low(er).

-The defense attacks a lot more. The defensive line looks disruptive, Rubin and Bryant really look like they can maul some people up front, and Winn and the Kent kid look like contributors as well.

-Kick coverage was good in the first half. Seeing Mingo make the first tackle on ST was awesome. He is a great athlete, if he figures out where he is supposed to be when he will be a good player.

Annnnnd....the Browns gonna be Browns....

-The defensive backfield is atrocious. Yes, they were playing easy coverages, which Bernie kept saying every play, but the guys were getting behind them and open in space way too easily and way too often. The front 7 had better get to the QB hard and often, or else we could set a record for yards per pass play given up. We are 1-deep at corner. Bademosi can hit and gives high effort...but we are still 1-deep at safety. I know some guys didn't play, but it didn't say much for our depth, that's for sure. But the bottom line is it is a passing league.

-Cameron looks lost half the time, and he drops too many passes. The backup Barnidge or whatever his name is was solid but unspectacular...don't be surprised to see him start and Cameron take an Evan Moore role if he doesn't get it figured out.

-Brandon Jackson looked just OK. Hardesty should be cut. Lewis looked good, and Ogie can play a little, but the RB depth is a concern if Richardson misses any games.

maybe the defensive backfield will get a little bit better when the CB who did not play last night gets to see some playing time but I doubt it. Also, maybe McFadden will get better when he gets over his groin injury and he might help out. I have no idea why they did not go after a safety in free agency because you are correct if the front seven does not get to the opposing QB pretty quickl the back 4-6 is going to get embarrassed quite a bit.

another instance where I do not understan why they did not go after a better free agent TE. Cameron as you mention as a lot of learning to do and the guy from Carolina is known strictly as a blocking TE but maybe he will help out this season but I doubt it.

-Brandon Jackson looked just OK. Hardesty should be cut. Lewis looked good, and Ogie can play a little, but the RB depth is a concern if Richardson misses any games.
I will be very interested in what happens with Hardesty. While I agree that he should be cut, I still think Haslam likes the orange and white too much. We shall see.

I'll give the DB's a pass in this game due to all the guys that were missing, but pretty much everything out of the team during FA and the draft was only concerned with the pass rush. I think the DB's will be better than they showed last night, but they are gambling that these guys will be able to cover well enough to allow the pass rush to disrupt the passer. I also expect to see more out the the pass rush once the season starts and they really start attacking and scheming to the opponent.

In a few weeks I don't think you will need to worry about Marecic doing anything for the Browns.

Mingo attacking on special teams. Love the athletic ability and his willingness to contribute. Haven't heard a thing bad about him. The pick is becoming better every day.

In order of things I saw.

Bess will be a great compliment as a 3rd down WR who can move the chains.

Gordon is running better routes and had good separation from Janoris Jenkins.

Dion Lewis is a solid compliment to Trent. A back who can take a few carries, and more importantly, great in the passing game.

Our defensive line generated good pressure with consistency. No sacks right away, but the pocket was usually collapsed and the line was pushed into Bradford's face.

Buster Skrine has is learning to attack the ball and trust his speed.

I never counted more than 4 seconds that any QB had to throw with a clean pocket.

Robertson is developing into a good linebacker. Very solid in coverage.

Benjamin can fly. Even on the field as 4th WR his speed must be respected.

The Dline also has great depth. Huges, Winn and Kitchen are a great 3 down compliment. Winn scrapping down the line and making that big hit on Daryl Richardson was just awesome.

Our safeties are a big problem, especially without Ward.

Trevin Wade might be a very solid nickel back.

Bademosi can tackle, and hit too.

Shayne Graham has a reliable leg inside of 40.

We need another TE (boy, Stoney would have been nice) and a true fullback.

If we want Trent to power the ball inside, our guard play must improve.

Quinten Groves is a damn fine backup at OLB. Plays with tenacity.

Mingo came along slowly. Kept going outside, then finally used a couple inside moves forcing the QB to retreat. The sack was nice - he has motor. That's the most important part of being a DE.

Some very positive things to take away. Also some scary things.

Our interior Oline depth is crucial. Still searching for a #2CB. A FS will be key next year.
While we're at it - throw in another TE.

Weeden looked a fair bit more comfortable. The Oline did a good job keeping him protected against a pretty damn good Dline.

I don't...and do not now...wish for anyone to get hurt. But it looks like the writing is on the wall for Hardesty.

And only in Cleveland can we end up with Jeff Fisher vs. Bernie Kosar vs. Peter King...over a PRESEASON BROADCAST :slappy:
maybe Hardesty can find a spot at OG

I do not know what is wrong with Fisher because I listen to most of the broadcast and did not think Bernie was over the top and Peter King is just wrong
