A couple of observations:
1. I'm not sure who's to blame in the Hillis situation. Neither side is being completely honest about the issues. If Hillis wasn't playing yesterday, it is either because he lied and told the staff he had a pulled hammy to continue what I perceive to be his petulance OR the coaching staff made up the injury to justify their decision not to play him over contract issues. I personally think its the former. If anything, not playing Hillis yesterday increased his value to this team because Hardesty still can't catch the ball out of the backfield or pick up a blitz. So I tend to think it is still just Hillis being a primadonna - which would make all of the fanbacking he's getting ridiculous. Either way, the injury story is bogus. He wasn't icing it up. He wasn't trying to keep it loose on a stationary bike. There is no hamstring problem.
2. Colt McCoy can't throw out of the pocket. It is really an amazing lack of skill for someone who started for 4 years at Texas and has shown some real elusiveness at the quarterback position. But could you ever really envision Colt picking apart a defense standing comfortably in the pocket? He has one of the best LTs in football, and yet the coaching staff knows that the best option is to roll him out on a bootleg for a 4-yard crossing pattern. And it seems that his accuracy has taken a hit as well. He's overthrowing receivers on any route over 10 yards. The only time he's effective is against the prevent defense. Last year, he had potential. This year, we're seeing his ceiling. He's a slightly better version of Brady Quinn. I hate to say it so quickly in his career, but its time to move on.
3. Pat Shurmur is like a deer in headlights. I thought his hiring was an act of borderline nepotism at the time and its becoming more and more clear every game. This team has been woefully underprepared in every game its played. Its a miracle they won 2 games - and it will be a miracle if they win another. I knew it the first game when the Bengals got the TD pass from Gradkowski to Green when the defense couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. The offense routinely doesn't know what the hell is going on. Even Josh Cribbs, who has epitomized class within this dumpster fire of an organization, is vocally frustrated.
In the post-game press conference, he explained giving up a TD on the fake FG as "we were going for the block." Really? So, basically, you thought it was more likely that you were going to block Janikowki's kick than the Raiders were going to fake - so much so that you didn't even prepare your special teams for the posssibility?!?!? And when the field goal was going to keep a two-score game a two-score game, you thought the risk was worth the highly unlikely benefit. COME THE [censored] ON!
He has no idea what he is doing. The only thing he does right is accept blame. Stop saying you're sorry. Do better, like, I don't know, YESTERDAY! Or get a new job.
4. I hate fantanking. Yes, I realize we're better off losing the rest of our games and hoping to get Andrew Luck. This team isn't going anywhere. I get that. But I support my team every Sunday and I will continue to do so until the end of the season. If you feel differently, there may still be room on the Steelers bandwagon.
