Cleveland Browns (2010 season)

With Cribbs able to play Sunday and with a guy very familiar with McCoy the Saints better watch out:)

Cleveland.com

BEREA, Ohio ? Of all the Browns rookies, Carlton Mitchell might be the one who has gone most unnoticed. That could be about to change. The big and speedy receiver from South Florida, drafted in the sixth round, is being talked up by coach Eric Mangini after a few weeks of good practices.

The fact the Browns likely will be missing Josh Cribbs and Mohamed Massaquoi in New Orleans on Sunday is a call for somebody to step up. If not now for Mitchell, then when?

Mangini, in fact, volunteered a positive report on Mitchell in the context of a question about rookie guard Shawn Lauvao.

"Carlton, I think he's had two or three really good weeks, and I don't mean just catching the ball," the coach said. "He's showing up every day and doing good things every day. He and I talked the other day and I said any day now he could be getting an opportunity, possibly this week. I'm excited about that, too."

I'm that fine state between buzzed an drunk, once I'm done on here - going to push that beyond the line.

Damn fine game today. The running game, the defense and special teams.

I'd prefer not breaking down all the things I liked until sobriety kicks in, so that'll probably be tomorrow morning.

That said, just a great day to be a Brown's fan.

One thing I have to say for Eric Mangini, he has one of, if not the, least talented roster in the NFL and he has these guys out there competing week in and week out. Whether that will save him for another year, I don't know, but at least this isn't the soft teams getting blown out on a regular basis that Crennel fielded. I like the defense a lot, well except for Easy-E. I'm ready to eat some crow on the T.J. Ward draft pick. I bitched and moaned about it, but that kid is a football player. Can't ask for much more from a 2nd round pick. I'm still not sold totally on Colt, but the kid clearly cares about winning and has the "take charge" kind of attitude you want under center. We may not have to go QB next year, but he needs some help. They need to find some receivers and probably another back to go with Hillis be it through FA or the draft. I love Rob Ryan but I think he's gonna be a hot HC candidate this offseason, so I'm thinking he may be gone next year.

I didn't think it would be so this year, but this team is actually worth following. It's not pretty by any means, but they have enough spunk to upset some teams the rest of the way. I actually think they can play with, if not necessarily beat, anybody. That's a nice change.

All I have to say is:

Where the fuck did that come from?

I'm not complaining though. NFBuck is right, Mangini has this team competing their asses off....they don't have the talent to win without a maximum effort on both sides of the ball but given how the Crennel teams would quit at the first sign of POSSIBLE adversity, I'm loving the change so far.

I think the biggest part of turning around a team in the NFL is to get over the losing mentality, which the Brown seem to be doing. Now they need another draft to fill some of the larger holes that are left and they might be halfway decent.
I'd still go back to Wallace if he gets healthy this year so McCoy can go into the offseason with nothing but good things to take from this season. I have no problem with McCoy going into next season as the starting QB after the past 2 games. With how much WR depth there is going to be this draft the Browns need to come out with a true #1 WR. They probably need at least one more body on the oline as well. I'm content with the RB's for now. RB is one of the easier positions for a rookie to come in and contribute so I'd be willing to wait on that for another year with Hillis and the current crew handling the running game next year. The defense needs another playmaker per position group assuming they are able to hold onto the good players they already have.

quite frankly, cleveland needs 3 starters along the OL. Steinbach has been awful this year. Billy Yates is a chump, and Womack while admirable, is out manned at RT. Hopefully Lauvao can provide some stability at the RG spot after the bye. the defense needs one legit player at each level, namely at DE, someone who can rush the passer, and a FS.

I give Rob Ryan a ton of credit. We saw this UFO defense last year with all sorts of combinations of lineman, backers and db's and it was very effective in confusing Brees and creating turnovers. I love his aggressive style of defense and a refusal to back down even when the secondary has been getting toasted this year. They have very few playmakers (if any) but play like a team and play extremely hard which deserves respect.

If this team had any type of talent I believe Mangini could win here. I don't know if he will get a shot or not next year, but if we let him go I can see this biting us in the ass just like Billy Bell.

This team looks like they genuinely play for one another and play for their coaches. It is refreshing to see. As I watched parts of the Bengals game yesterday, I saw a team with so much more talent than the Browns but with absolutely no chemistry. Made me wonder that much more about our team and what our coaching staff could do if we had any type of talent.

The good news is this appears to be a rather deep draft at certain positions, namely HB, CB and WR.

It's just more along the lines of what you would like to do first in the draft.

DE, WR, HB, S, LB, RT and to a lesser extent CB all need to be addressed.

I have to disagree with you regarding Rob Ryan. Most teams would have to completely redo their rosters for his defense to work like it is working with the Browns plus there are a few more qualified assistants and possibly HC's that might be available next year.

I would let Colt finished the season as our starting QB unless all of a sudden he pulls an Anderson on us. He has made very few mistakes in the past couple games so I say continued to ride the young pony:)

I don't know why you are thinking about getting another RB to back up Hillis unless you have completely given up on Hardesty which is possible.
I tend to agree more with tsteele with regards to getting a free safety and upgrading the DL before I really do anything except for getting a stretch WR.

The OL needs addressed but if Lauvao shows anything by the end of the season I would think we could get a RT in free agency. I think the OL needs to start becoming a little younger before it does get too old.

I haven't given up on Hardesty, but him being so prone to injury really hurts his chances with this team. Again, with a draft that's projected to be deep at RB, I doubt it will hurt to grab one. I mean, does anyone think Mike Bell is really going to be on roster next year? James Davis will most likely be gone if Bell is getting carries over him (damn shame too, I wanted that kid to work out)

Hillis IMHO is an every down back, however I would really love to have that change of pace, home-run threat behind Colt. Somebody to effectively spell him because he's a very much a downhill runner and he's going to take a beating as the season goes on. But I want The Moose as a corner-stone to this power running game, sign him long term; he'll be beyond his value come the winter months. Yet as much as I'd love to take offense with the first pick, we're still the AFC North - defense has priority.

Marcell Dareus, Heyward, Clayborne - basically a DE. We need a playmaking DE. Rodger's isn't getting younger. Rubin appears to be fine for NT. A DE that can draw the occasional double team, push the pocket, and help clog running lanes.

Linebacker is in need of an upgrade too. OLB, boils down to pass rush. Von Miller anyone?

RB - Daniel Thomas? Kid might just be available in the first half of the 3rd round. If not, Kendall Hunter, Armando Allen? I'd love to get Murray but I don't see that happening. Maybe his injury history will knock him to the 2nd round...

WR: Jones, Green, Baldwin, Posey, Floyd, Hankerson, Blackmon...anyone? Insanely deep WR class. DV might not come out, but I'm tossing his name just in case. I don't mind having the smart, hardworking receivers we do now, but a bonafide/legit #1 WR who command the attention of the entire opposing secondary is a damn fine thing to have. That will allow Stuckey, Cribbs, Robo, Moore and Watson some room to run.

S: Whatever you have to do to get Elam out of there. If that means putting Sheldon back full time FS I'm fine. It's not a longterm answer, but it does allow us to focus on other area's of need until FA or the 2012 Draft.

RT: Sherrod, Cannon, Carimi. I'm tossing out names, but these are options if we somehow end up in the tail end of the 1st (except Sherrod, that kid will be top 20 material)
