Cleveland Browns (2010 season)

Hey I agree with everyone, and one of the reasons that we will strive for mediocrity for the forseeable future is that teams like Ravens score on that shit...all the time, or at least flip the field and get into FG range immediately. Teams like Cleveland don't. Ever. I'm not defending Barton except to say that at least he got the ball and maybe that's what Mangenius instructed his front 7 guys to do...fall on the ball if you see it to ensure possession. The play may be wrong, but it might not be his fault.

The game yesterday was pathetic. No identity whatsoever. Pathetic.

There were flashes of good things, especially in the first half, but then when it came down to being time to salt the game away or then try and come back, you're right, it was the SOS.

We lost a game Sunday, we should have won. I mean, we should have beaten Tampa Bay. For all the many positives I saw, especially with the defense, we still should have won that game.

Two things concern me, the offensive line is paper thin, and Jake Delhomme at QB. JD looked very good during the preseason, and I thought he would be at least, a good fill in to keep the Browns in games.

Sunday, he reverted to the form the got him cut in Carolina. He was lucky he wasn't picked off 6 times. I don't know how many times he tried to throw to double covered receivers.:(

Talib, I believe, was suspended for the game...so double the # of INTs had he been playing. Matt Moore had a terrible game too, but I am starting to wonder if there wasn't a good reason they were going with him down there anyway. Delhomme should be a Brunell-type backup at this stage of his career. This reminds me of the year Trent Dilfer started.

This team still has the same warts as last year but they are just getting smaller. Until we get some more playmakers on this team we are destined for mediocrity year in and year out. Look at our defense...we look better in the secondary with Ward, Haden and Wright but we have no one that even comes close to Pro Bowl caliber in the front 7. We have to resort to gimmicks like the UFO with one down lineman and 5 linebackers. I give Ryan some credit for the creativity but it speaks volumes to the talent level on the defense when you have to resort to something like that.

That being said, I thought the defense played well on Sunday...the offense however, was strikingly similar to the beginning of last year. Too many pass calls and not enough run plays. I thought Daboll got a little pass happy and we didn't have a lot of balance. The Browns ran the ball only 23 times!! Delhomme needs the rushing game to work if he is going to be effective. Sounds like a broken record but it is the truth. Delhomme does not have a big arm and we don't have the play making receivers that are going to hit the home run so at this stage of his career he is more of a dink and dunker. There is a big improvement here in that he is so much more accurate on the short balls than the would be quarterbacks that we threw out on the field the last couple of years, but without the complement of a good run game I think you saw the result. The end of last year shows that we can do it and with a QB that can complete a 5 yard pass when you need it we can move the ball.

I want to say SOS but the team is better even though we lost a game that we should have won. I think we all have to realize that this cup is still half empty and hopefully someday we will be saying its half full. Until we get some more talent we are going to lose games like this instead of winning them and I will still probably be looking for something else to do on Sunday afternoons by the beginning of October.

So, some thoughts I've had since sunday.

Jake: He went back to old form. Bad - I don't know if he's just lost it between the ears or he's trying to hard to make a solid debut for a new team. Some of the throws we're god awful. Like said above, we dont have quite the playmakers that this offense could use/need. So the running game needs to become a bit more prevalent, and Delhomme needs to be throwing off play fakes and short- intermediate routes.

You only need so many downfield passes in a game to keep the defense honest. Just slinging the ball blindly late in the half/game is nothing short of idiocy.

The touchdown pass to MM, I can't tell if it was poor execution from Tampa's safeties, or an actual decent throw from Delhomme. I want to say a small combination of both, but MM did have to make a bit of a jump - but by that time the safety had overran the throw.

Offense in general: The left side of the O-line is one of the best in the NFL and an emerging young center who by all accounts appears to be blossoming in his 2nd year. However the right side of the line might just be the worst in the league. I hope and pray Lavauo is ready to go in year 2, we'll need him. But this team NEEDS a RT - badly. Which is why Tampa overloaded the left side so much. They knew the right side of our line would be beaten 1 on 1.

More running calls please - I realize its crazy to ask that considering last year, but spread the ball around. Harrison, The Moose, and hell - Davis too while we're at it.

Harrison got 9 carries, Moose got 9 as well. The first was averaging nearly 6ypc, the latter just a tad under 5. That's strong running. I realize we might be trying to keep this guy's fresh, but I'd ideally like to see Harrison getting 12-15 carries a game. Especially with that type of ypc going on. Ball security appears to be an issue though. But this only feeds into the play action game - Again, back to the first touchdown pass, the play fake really sucked in the LB's and the FS. Either that or it was just a decent pass against Cover 1.

Where are the TE's? Evan Moore made a nice play, I wouldn't mind seeing a few drag routes with him and Watson down the seam. Toss in the end around to Cribbs once every now and then.

Defense: AFAIC played much better as a unit then last year. The tipped pass was good defense, but just a very bad break plus a great adjustment & awareness from the receiver. By all means this could have been a 14-10 victory. Rookies got picked on a pick (Ward, Haden) but I thought they held their own quite admirably and I believe we have a pair of very solid pro's on our hands. I still fully expect Haden and Wright to be our starting pair mid-way through the season. Slide Brown back to FS where he belongs and you actually have a pretty decent defensive backfield. Athought Adams had a pretty decent game. Ward likes blitzing, and I know Freeman is still feeling that hit before the INT.

Front 7. Man that 1-5 was funny to watch. Yet sad. You had a Haden coming off the edge (which he did tip off a bit pre-snap) Rodger's did a decent job drawing the attention of the LG/T, Fujita and Benard had good push up front - it was very promising to see our boys getting off the field on 3rd down.

Linebackers - we are just flat out, not very athletic. Watching Barton hesitate, then take a piss-poor angle to Freeman just hurt. This corps needs a serious going over. Especially in terms of pass rush - of course the one man that I know for a fact could have contributed ended up wearing a Steelers jersey :(

This team has pressing needs @ QB, RT, DE, LB, WR and possibly RB.

To recap: Jake needs to get his head out of his ass. If its not there, throw it away. This honestly should have been a 14-3 maybe 14-7 victory.

The defense is playing with some good consistency, but much like offense, we lack playmakers, at least, in the front 7.

Run the ball, give Harrison some carries for god sake, I want to see James Davis especially if Moose coughs up the ball.

Protect the damn ball. Stop turning it over (Moose, Jake) and lets get a couple defensive turnovers (thank you Adams) and you win ballgames.

Robo and MM, keep improving, hopefully we'll have you a QB ready to go before your career primes.

Note to Jake. If you are injured, for the team's sake, take yourself out of the game.
BEREA, Ohio -- Still in a walking boot on his right foot, Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme stood in the locker room today and said, "It's extremely disappointing. To me, it's embarrassing."

Delhomme has not been ruled out of Sunday's home opener against the Chiefs, but he won't practice today and isn't sure when he'll return this week, if at all.

Delhomme hurt his right ankle on the first interception thrown in the final seconds of the first half in Tampa. He said the ankle was taped at halftime and he played through the injury the second half without realizing how serious it was.

He said he knew later Sunday night that it was worse than expected.
Delhomme had an MRI on the ankle Tuesday, but would not disclose the results.

Eh, I don't blame him. Shitty QBs who fall into starting gigs tend to lose them (even to other shitty QBs) once they get hurt. He was just trying to hang on.

I thought the exact same thing live. I was watching thinking "If that is someone else secure in their job they come out, but Jake knows damn well if Seneca goes in and plays well he'll never see the field again, so he won't come out, even if he is hurting the team"

Nothing there at all to disagree with. I would say the most disappointing part, aside from the loss, was cleveland's inability to offensively adjust to what Tampa was doing in the 2nd half. Cleveland marched down the field to start the 2nd, then fumbled.

From that point on, they went into a shell offensively. They had no answer for Tampa's overloading the left side. No misdirection, no screens, nothing. That is unacceptable.

Part of it was horseshitian field position, which of course they set up themselves by...being unable to move the ball. It was really dreadful...Tampa seemed all too anxious to trade punts all day, thinking they would find their time to strike and steal the win. They did.
