Cleveland Browns add a scout and a defensive backBy Tony Grossi February 12, 2010, 3:17PM
BEREA, Ohio -- Tom Headlee, who was a coaching assistant for the Seattle Seahawks when Mike Holmgren was coach, was added to the Browns' scouting staff. Headlee was named a pro scout.
Headlee was a coaching assistant with Seattle from 2000 to '05 and then was named defensive quality control coach in 2006. He stayed with the Seahawks in 2009 after Holmgren left the organization.
Headlee is a native of Wenatchee, Wash., and graduated from Washington State University.
Headlee is the fourth member of Holmgren's Seattle coaching staff to join the Browns.
The Browns also announced the signing of defensive back John Bowie.
The Columbus native was a fourth-round draft pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2007.
I wonder how good this defensive back is that they picked up from the Raiders.

Shame on this franchise for not getting something out of him in a trade when they could have.

Hindsight is always 20-20. With that said, I mentioned to more than one friend of mind following the 2007 that not only was DA's season "suspect" but the Browns 10-6 campaign was very suspect (played one of the weakest schedules and won a couple games in a lucky fashion). IIRC, following that double fluke season, there was strong word that the Ravens were going to try to get DA back (offer sheet type deal IIRC) and the Browns would have been received nice draft picks in return.

Now if I had been GM at that time, and this isn't 20-20 hindsight, I would have let the Ravens have him, take the draft picks and let Quinn the Eskimo be the QB in the 2008 season. But you know as well as I do, that if that had happened, everyone at that time would have questioned the sanity of any GM who would let a Pro Bowl QB get away from a 10-6 team to let an untested noob at the QB position.

For me, it is fun to contemplate what would this new Holmgren led regime done if they had been around at that time. Surely Holmgren would have seen what many of us saw in DA, but would he have had the sack to follow through?

So, looks like Holmgren has an interest in seeing West Coast principles in this offense.

There already are West Coast principles in the offense.

I'll admit I'm not abreast of all the possibilities the Browns had with DA that year, nor do I know exactly how all the options work, but why would the franchise tag not have worked out perfectly? 1 year deal, see if he can duplicate his performance, and then take it from there?

Antonio Cromartie and Antrel Rolle in free agency.

Anybody besides me curious about this? Rolle probably wants a huge contract, and who knows whats going to happen between him and the Cards.

Is it possible that the Browns might make a running at Cromartie though? He can still ball and is a great ST player if need be.

edit: It also appears Thomas Jones will be realesed from the Jets. Any other potential I'm missing that the Browns could be in on?

I haven't heard much chatter about the Browns being major players in FA this year, so I doubt they make any kind of run at those guys. Jones might be interesting, but I look for them to rely on Harrison and a draft pick.

DA should finally be getting his walking papers very soon...

The Browns will make some moves. They have to instill confidence with the fans. 11 picks in the draft is how you build the team long term. I expect them to plug some holes in free agency. Holmgren and Heckert will be aggressive but smart IMO. It's not a very good UFA class.

There was chatter in the CPD yesterday that the Browns are a "dark horse" in getting Julius Peppers, but I think he'll want WAY too much money/years for the Browns to consider.

I agree they'll plug some holes, but I'll be surprised to see them go after "big names". I could be wrong...

Do. Not. Want.

He only gives an effort about 33% of the time and once he gets a fat payday, he'll just loaf and collect. All the talent in the world, just not the drive.

Thomas Jones is definitely a name that interests me, without knowing any of the financials.

All the guy does is work hard, put up 1200 yards, and then get cast aside for the next big flop (er, thing). He'd be a nice fit, but I'm not sure he'd prefer to come here.

They Browns aren't going to contend for anything next year, so I'd rather see them try to develop some younger RBs instead of signing a 30+ year old RB. Jones is still a talented guy, but what's he worth to the Browns? He's a guy that a contending team should sign. Texans maybe.

I'm also a little skeptical of Peppers. He's going want a ton of money, and from what I saw of him last year he was very underwhelming. Sure, he can dominate, but he's pretty inconsistent. I'd imagine he'll stick with a 4-3 team as a DE anyways, more money that way than as an OLB.
