yah with the 6th pick i think the browns will do one of 3 possible things, 2 being pretty much for sure

1. draft AJ Green if he is still there
2. if Green is not there draft Dareus, Quinn, Miller or Bowers
3. if we dont like the above 4 then we try and trade down

If none of those guys are still on the board when the Browns pick, that means Patrick Peterson still is. I don't think there's a chance in hell that happens, but if it did the Browns should take him and not look back. I know they spent their first rounder last year on Haden, but if you have a guy like Peterson on the other side you have a pretty good chance of locking down the outer 1/3rds of the field on defense for years to come. Plus, I'm of the opinion that the Browns need to become the best in the NFL at something.

I default to a BPA philosophy when it comes to what the Browns should do in the draft. If the scenarios in #1 & #2 happen, Peterson easily becomes the best player available with the #6 pick.

i like Peterson as well but i was just assuming that he wouldn't be available at #6...and i love the idea of having the possibility of having 2 lockdown corners...could be a problem down the road when its time to re-sign one of them but you can worry about that when the time comes...and i forgot to mention some scouts say jimmy smith from colorado is better then both patterson and amukarma...why it will be easier to determine after the combine

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...ect-to-watch-colorado-cornerback-jimmy-smith/

Patrick Peterson (LSU) and Prince Amukamara (Nebraska) are widely considered the 2011 draft’s best two cornerback prospects. It caught my eye, then, that Russ Lande of Sporting News recently ranked Smith ahead of both Peterson and Amukamara as the position’s top draft-eligible.
Smith left school with only three career interceptions, but a closer look reveals a potential shutdown cornerback. As Gregg Rosenthal put it, “the Nnamdi Asomugha of the Big 12.”
According to statistics compiled by the University of Colorado, Smith was targeted just 20 times in man coverage throughout his 12-start senior season. He allowed 11 completions (55 percent) and one touchdown. The Big 12 has a reputation as one of the most pass-happy college football conferences. Clearly, offensive coordinators shied away from Smith.
Smith also garnered first-team All-Big 12 honors from the coaches, despite not picking off a single pass. It’s an obvious sign of respect.
The Colorado website, cubuffs.com, lists Smith with a 4.35 forty time at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds. Though he currently ranks just fifth in Mike Mayock’s cornerback rankings, it seems like a good bet that Smith could be one of the biggest “risers” as the 2011 draft approaches.

heres a good article about why we didnt try and trade rogers and who we can target in FA at the DL position

The Browns have Ahtyba Rubin. That much we know. We also know that they have Brian Shaefering too probably. He is supposed to be a restricted free agent, so who knows what that even means without a deal in place between players and owners. That is pretty much all we know as the Browns made headlines cutting Shaun Rogers, Kenyon Coleman, Eric Barton, David Bowens and Robert Royal. The Browns depth chart also lists players like Derreck Robinson, Ko Quaye, Brian Sanford, and Jayme Mitchell. So, yeah, we can assume that the Browns are going to be attacking the defensive line in both free agency and the draft. Except what will free agency be like with no deal in place? Who knows?
Assuming there is a season and free agency eventually hits, the names out there are Cullen Jenkins (GB), , Charles Johnson from Carolina, Ray Edwards (MIN), Mathias Kiwanuka (NYG), Shaun Ellis (NYJ), Jason Babin (TEN), Marcus Spears (DAL), Haloti Ngata (BAL), Richard Seymour (OAK) and the aging Pat Williams (MIN.) Obviously Richard Seymour would be nice because we have already seen what he can do to Ben Roethlisberger.

i have to wonder how many of these guys would of been cut under Mangini if he was still around...especially Barton, Bowens and Coleman...i like the move by heckert and staff and think this is definitely a move in the right directions...if we are switching to 4-3 we are going to need new personnel and players under 40 on the defensive line...if this CBA ever gets done i think we will be making a bunch of moves to sure up the defensive front thru free agency as i think we are still going to draft AJ Green in the first round of the draft if he is available

I was a little surprised by Barton, though I guess there's a movement to get rid of the Jets. Cutting Royal means we at least have a chance not to lead the league in drops.

more cuts to come...

The Cleveland Plain Dealer confirms that the Browns are likely to release Jake Delhomme this offseason.

The only surprise here is that Delhomme wasn't among the Browns' initial round of roster cuts on Wednesday. Delhomme carries a $5.4 million salary into the final year of a contract he was never going to fulfill. Once a free agent, Delhomme should generate zero interest as a potential starter.

Cleveland Browns facing more roster decisions

By Tony Grossi, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND -- The Browns started their (biennial) roster overhaul by terminating the contracts of six players on Wednesday -- DL Shaun Rogers, DL Kenyon Coleman, LB Eric Barton, LB David Bowens, TE Robert Royal and OT John St. Clair.

All of the players are over 30 years old. And all but Rogers were signed to free agent contracts in 2009 by the Eric Mangini regime.
More moves are in the works. Who's likely to go? As a guide, here is a look at the roster and/or contract status of a number of key players from last year's team.
OFFENSE
* QB Jake Delhomme, 36: Due a base salary of $5.4 million in the last of his two-year deal. His days of mentoring Colt McCoy appear over.
* QB Seneca Wallace, 30: Unsigned. Might be the No. 1 backup and tutor McCoy in the West Coast offense if resigned. Might drum up interest elswhere when/if free agency begins.
* LG Eric Steinbach, 30: Signed through 2012 at a yearly average of $6.08 million.
* RG Floyd Womack, 32: Unsigned.
* RT Tony Pashos, 30: Signed through 2012 at yearly average of $2.775 million. Will be the starting right tackle if fully recovered from season-ending ankle injury and surgery.
* G-C Bill Yates, 30: Unsigned.
* FB Lawrence Vickers, 27: Unsigned.
* RB Mike Bell, 27: Unsigned.
* WR Chansi Stuckey, 27: Unsigned.
* TE Benjamin Watson, 30: Signed through 2012 at yearly average of $2.65 million.
* TE Evan Moore, 26: Unsigned. Finished season on injured reserve with hip/groin injury.

No right I know...I was just meaning in contrast to the first round of cuts which I thought were fine, though I will kinda miss Bowens.

So much of this depends on what happens in the CBA regarding the unsigned players and the trading of players it's really hard to tell what's going to happen. I have heard that Yates (if they can sign him) is a pretty good player and there was some talk that Steinbach really did not perform that well last season. I would also think that they keep Pashos even though he is a little long in the tooth.

Answering the biggest offseason question for every team in the AFC

Cleveland Browns
After six years in a 3-4 defense, do the Browns have the personnel on hand to make the switch to a 4-3 scheme under new coordinator Dick Jauron?
At the moment, no. Especially after Cleveland began its defensive transformation this week by purging its roster of veterans like defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, defensive end Kenyon Coleman, and linebackers David Bowens and Eric Barton. While none of those moves were really a surprise, it leaves the Browns a little short of bodies in spots, especially along the defensive line, where more linemen are now required.
Promising nose tackle Ahtyba Rubin will slide to defensive tackle and man one inside spot, and Browns 2010 sack leader Marcus Bernard might be moving from outside linebacker to defensive end. But after that, there's a lot of projection involved in piecing together a front seven, including the hope that D'Qwell Jackson can handle the key middle linebacker role after losing almost all of the past two seasons to pectoral injuries.
The draft figures to be crucial in Cleveland's ability to acquire 4-3 personnel, with defensive ends and outside linebackers the greatest need positions. That's one reason the Browns, as much as they might like him, could be hard-pressed to take Georgia receiver A.J. Green with their No. 6 pick. Defense is too much of a priority.

i still think free agency is going to be the biggest tell of what the browns will do on draft day...that is if and when there is a free agency period this year

Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur confirms he'll go without an offensive coordinator

Published: Friday, February 11, 2011, 4:45 AM Updated: Friday, February 11, 2011, 4:46 AM

By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio ? Browns coach Pat Shurmur confirmed Thursday he will go without an offensive coordinator -- an unorthodox move in the NFL -- and said his staff is basically complete. He said he will call the plays and act as head coach/offensive coordinator his first season on the job.
"I think it's going to stay that way [without a coordinator]," he said at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards, where he was a presenter. "I will actually take that role and then we have quite a few very accomplished coaches on offense."
Shurmur believes he will be fine assuming the extra duty, even though this is his first time as a head coach. Only one NFL team went without an offensive coordinator in 2010 -- the Patriots under coach Bill Belichick. The Cardinals split the job between running- and passing-game coordinators.
"I feel like we've hired a terrific staff and everybody on this staff has roles and issues of the day," Shurmur said.
"I feel really good about how we've structured things and I think it's going to work well."
Shurmur, who spent the past two seasons calling plays as the Rams' offensive coordinator, said there was never any doubt he would call his own plays here.
"I think that's the key piece," Shurmur said. "As you go through the week, you put the plan together and everybody in the room has input. I think that's the way I'll do it."
Shurmur hired Mark Whipple as his quarterbacks coach and Mike Wilson as his receivers coach. He retained three offensive assistants from former coach Eric Mangini's staff: Gary Brown (running backs), Steve Hagen (tight ends) and George Warhop (offensive line).
Whipple has five years of NFL experience, including three with the Steelers in quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's first three seasons in the league. Wilson has six years of NFL experience, covering stints with the Raiders and Cardinals.
Shurmur hoped to hire either Mike McCoy or Bill Musgrave as offensive coordinator, but McCoy remained in Denver and Musgrave took the Vikings job.
"We made an effort to hire the very best guys we could, and I think that's the way it shaped up this year," Shurmur said.
Shurmur said he's thrilled to have landed defensive coordinator Dick Jauron, who worked under Browns President Mike Holmgren in Green Bay, and alongside Shurmur's uncle Fritz, who was the Packers' defensive coordinator.
"I've known Dick a long time, just in the profession," Shurmur said. "He and my uncle worked together. I've got a great deal of respect for him, and I've really become close to him as you can at NFL functions. I've obviously got a high amount of respect for him as a person and a coach."
Other topics Shurmur addressed during a 10-minute interview:
? On Colt McCoy as the starting QB heading into camp: "It would be a logical assumption."
? On what he said upon meeting Josh Cribbs for the first time Thursday: "I said what I wanted for him was to get in the end zone, so it's the start. He seemed to give me a big smile, so I think we're on the same page."
? On cutting six players, including Pro Bowl nose tackle Shaun Rogers: "I think every NFL team reshapes their roster each year, so that's the beginning phase and from here on out we'll just keep doing the things we need to do to make us as good as we can be."
? On whether Jauron, who coached Rogers in Detroit, helped make the decision to cut Rogers: "We had conversations behind the scenes, but I'm not sure that prior relationship had much to do with it."
? On whether he will switch to a 4-3 defense: "That's part of the roster shaping. I think that will become obvious soon."
? On the league's labor uncertainty: "It's business as usual right now. And then obviously if something happens, we have a plan in place and we'll execute it. but for right now, we're moving forward with calendars like we'll be playing ball."

Former Cleveland Browns DL Shaun Rogers says in a radio interview that he played hurt last year against his agent's advice

Published: Tuesday, February 15, 2011, 1:57 PM Updated: Tuesday, February 15, 2011, 2:15 PM

By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND -- Former Browns defensive linemen Shaun Rogers, in a radio interview on KILT in Houston, talked about getting cut last week by the Browns and the fact that he played hurt against the advice of his agent in 2010. Here are some excerpts from that interview:
If he was surprised that he was released:
?No. No it didn?t. It?s one of those things that come with the territory when you?re a veteran guy like myself. These kinds of things are going to happen.?
What he wants teams to take into account when they think about signing him:
?I would just hope that my track record would speak for itself. Unfortunately last year I played through some injuries against some advice from my agent Kennard (McGuire). He probably would?ve liked to see me sit down a little bit ?till I was fully there. We?re competitors in this game and guys go out there and try and give there all excluding all circumstances. I think I did alright with what I was asked to do this year. My goal right now is to get healthy and look into any opportunities.?
On what happened in Cleveland this past year:
?We just continued to rebuild and we lost a couple of guys. We lost crucial guys like Robaire Smith and we lost Shaun Smith to free agency. Those were versatile guys for us. The problem with me getting hurt last year, one of my young prot?g??s Ahtyba Rubin showed great promise and they wanted to get him on the field. They moved him to nose and we had a little rotation where I would go in at end and he would play nose and that?s just what it was. I was kinda banged up this year so I had a little more spot play than usual, but years previous to that I?ve been blessed and I?ve been one of the few guys in this league that I would consider a three-down guy. The league is getting specialized as far as guys playing two downs and bringing in other guys in third down situations. You see that a lot in the league. In my career I?ve been blessed and had the ability to do both. I?m just looking to get healthy and go out there and play at a level where I played at for many years which I consider to be one of the upper levels or a Pro-Bowl level.?
What he thinks about Rob Ryan:
?Coach Ryan is great. If guys like what they see in his brother, they?re twins so you?re getting the same thing. The level of excitement, the attitude ? I want to put this the right way ? it?s not a bad attitude, but it?s that swagger and confidence that they possess and what they do and provide to their defense. Defenses are built on attitude. Their attitude most definitely carries over to their defenses. As you see his brother was a D-Coordinator to the Ravens and they had a top defense for a long time. He went to the Jets and brought that same attitude and that toughness to their defense. I think Rob most definitely has that ability. He did well in Oakland and came to Cleveland and made strides with our defense there in several categories. I think with the level of talent in Dallas he will do well.?
On signing with Houston:
?Like I said it would be most definitely a fairy tale situation, but again you just look forward to exploring all opportunities and hopefully whoever reaches out to me and wherever I go it will most definitely be a positive experience.?
