If were switching to the 4-3 we need A DE who can get to the QB more than anything on defense. Bowers wont be there but i like Quinn a lot. Whatever we do im cool with it, except for the people saying we should go corner again. AJ Green would be fine witg me As well. I think the chance of him being a bust is very small.

We do need DBs, but I think first round is a stretch this year...though I am happy with the way the top 2 last year turned out so far. I think they will probably covert Roth back to DE and maybe another LB or two as well...whether any of them will be worth a shit there or not is a good question. WR to me in round 1 makes sense, and I suppose a DE could too...need a RT, but not in round 1.

Perfect Storm

I wanted to post this for a while but wanted to view a few more mock drafts and it is possible for this to happen.

Before Draft (trade Shaun Rodgers for a 3rd rounder (will not get more due to age and contract) = SD 3rd (82nd)

FA Targets: Tyson Clabo / T; Mathias Kiwanuka / DE; Brandon Mebane / DT

If Green (WR) or Bowers (DE) not available: Trade # 6 Pick to NE for their 1st (17) and 3rd (74).

FAs signed: Malcolm Floyd / WR; Tyson Clabo / T; Mathias Kiwanuka / DE.

FAs resigned: RB Lawrence Vickers / FB; DL Robaire Smith UFA; LB Matt Roth UFA; LB Marcus Bernard UFA; S Nick Sorenson; CB Eric Wright UFA

1 (17): Adrian Clayborn / DE / Iowa (Projects mid to late 1st)
2 (37): Drake Nevis / DT / LSU (Projects 2nd round)
3 (70): Demarco Murray / RB / Oklahoma (Projects late 2nd ? early 3rd)
3 (74): Casey Matthews / ILB/ Projects 3rd round)
3 (82): Greg Little / WR / UNC (Projects 3rd round)
4 (101): Justin Boren / OG / tOSU (Projects late 3rd ? 4th round)
5 (134): Jeremy Kerley / WR / TCU (5th round)
6 (163): Chykie Brown / CB / Texas (6th round)
6 (165): Tejay Johnson / S / TCU (6th round)

Cleveland would have to fill a few spots with lower cost FAs but it is achieveable. IMO, this would be a very good draft as well as some very good FA pick-ups. Thoughts?? Like I said this would be a perfect storm.

I agree with you regarding converting Roth to a DE but don't know if he's big enough. He would probably have to play a hybrid DE. The same is true of Bernard. I think a lot of the Jets LB's that Mancini brought in will be shown the door by Shurmer. Also, you don't get a RT in the first-round. Maybe if you were looking for an LT we were look in round one. I am not sure who I would take in round one but I think we are all in agreement that it would be a WR or a DL.

Also, for those of you who think we need a OC. The most defensive minded HC in the NFL had no OC on his staff last year. That would be Bill Belichick and I think we are all in agreement that he is not an offensive genius but his team certainly played very well the past couple years without a OC.

good post...i like getting Malcom Floyd and trading shaun rodgers...ive heard that rodgers may be retained by Jauron because rodgers had his most productive part of his career in detroit under Jauron...i still say get rid of him and would be thrilled with a 3rd rounder...Robaire Smith had a season ending back injury and he could actually retire...not the type of guy im looking to re-sign, along with Eric Wright...i like re-signing roth and benard because both can hopefully move to DE...i like your draft but like ive said earlier i dont like trading down just to get an extra pick...altho your probably right about a potential trade partner in new england since they have a stockpile of draft picks this year

Belichick has also been a coach (highly successful) for years now.

Plus he enjoy's the added benefit of having a HOF as his signal caller.

Same thing goes for Indy. Peyton Manning is pretty much the OC there. Hell, I honestly know people who couldn't even name the head coach when Dungy was there - why? Didn't matter.

Those teams are successful because of their QB's.

edit: Re-sign (Tender) Eric Wright btw. There's something in me that says give him another year. Put him at the nickel and let him try to prove himself again. Haden clearly will be put against the oppositions #1.

My thoughts exactly for retaining Wright. Keep him around for a year and see what he does. He may be a liability as an every down player but he does provide experience and depth.

I'm pretty sure Belichick's OC is Tom Brady. Unlike Brady, Colt needs someone to feed him plays at this point of his career.
The one thing I see that makes this move seem not as bad is Shurmer only has to focus on one side of the ball. He has a veteran DC with HC experience to handle the other side of the ball. As long as Juron handles all things defense I'm not worried. My question is who is going to be up in the booth for the offense? OC's are usually up high so they can see. They will need the QB coach on the sideline to talk to Colt so it seems like they really needed someone to put in the booth to help with the offense.

I just don't understand how Wright can go from the teams best CB to POS in one season. When they drafted Haden my first thought was that we were set at CB for the next few years. I don't mind keeping him as long as he's cheap.

Thanks. Personally, I think Rodgers is past his prime but may have 1 - 2 years max left in the right environment (Not Cleveland). Attitude, injuries, and weight are issues. Plus the Browns need to play for the future and Rodgers does not have enough gas in the tank to be part of it IMO.

I wasn't aware of the significance of the injury to RS and that he was contemplating retirement...thanks for pointing that out. Wright would be kept as a nickle guy, depth and experience. Not a starter.

Management pissed me off last year when they traded up to get Hardesty and had multiple needs to address rather than getting a back that may never play any meaningful time in the NFL. I liked Hardesty during his recruitment (prior to signing with UT) and when healthy is a very good running back BUT he is fragile and as have been often proved, a fragile RB in the NFL does not equate to longevity.

Cleveland has many needs and if they are changing to a 4 - 3, they must build through the draft and focus on young, key FAs. If I could make the trade with NE and get an excellent player at # 17 at a big poistion of need at a better value and fill another position in the 3rd. I gotta do it. Plus a # 17 SHOULD be easier to sign as well. Clayboirn and Kiwanuka would be great additions to the DE positions.

TIFWIW, if the players drafted pan out and do well, this would cut down on fielding a contender by at least one year. Here's hoping.

If you think they pissed you off getting Hardesty, imagine how bad that would be if they hadn't struck bubblin' crude on the Hillis trade. If Peyton was nothing but a big dumb FB like Denver thought he was, the entire running game and offense would have been a failed giraffe abortion, and the team would likely have been 1-15. As bad as things are, they're damned lucky they can sign a "not as crappy as Mike Bell" backup and wait and see if Hardesty either develops into a solid compliment and/or tears all of his legs and nuts. If they didn't have that luxury, it might take a decade to fix this offense.

So you are telling me that Brady draws out the game plan during the week and also practices with the first-team while he is drawing up the game plan.

I agree they are successful QB's but they do not drop the game plan during the week and practice with the first-team that same week. I guess Brady and Manning also meet with the other coaches while they are practicing.

agree

The only problem that I have with this is that you could get much more than the number 17 and 74 picks for the number 6 pick...
