Cleveland Browns (2010 season)

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Browns are interested in former University of Miami offensive coordinator Mark Whipple for their vacant OC position.
Whipple coordinated Miami's offense the last two seasons before being replaced by Jedd Fisch when a new regime took over. He was the Steelers quarterbacks coach from 2004-06 and and offensive assistant for the Eagles the following two years after that, where he worked with several current Browns personnel executives and scouts -- notably GM Tom Heckert -- which could give him a leg up on the competition. The Browns OC job has become less appealing with news that head coach Pat Shurmur plans to do a lot of the playcalling.

Cleveland Browns miss out on Bill Musgrave, reportedly interested in ex-Steelers assistant Whipple

By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns lost out to the Vikings for offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, but a new candidate has emerged in former Steelers quarterbacks coach and Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, a report says.
In addition, the Browns' chances of landing Eagles' secondary coach Dick Jauron took a hit Wednesday when the Eagles' top candidate, Jim Mora, took himself out of the running for both the Eagles' and Broncos' coordinator jobs. Jauron is now most likely the Eagles' leading candidate, although they will also interview fired Rams defensive coordinator Bill Davis.
Jauron interviewed with the Browns on Tuesday and Wednesday, but nothing was expected to happen immediately. The Browns are also expected to interview former NFL head coach Dave Wannstedt on Thursday.
Musgrave was the second offensive coordinator candidate to turn the Browns down. The first was Denver's Mike McCoy, who opted to stay with the Broncos under new coach John Fox, his long-time boss with the Panthers.
The Browns interviewed Musgrave on Tuesday. He then spent Wednesday with the Vikings, where ESPN reported he had accepted the Vikings job. He'll call plays under head coach Leslie Frazier. n Cleveland, Musgrave most likely would've deferred in that regard to coach Pat Shurmur. But it didn't take the Browns long to turn their attention to Whipple, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Whipple, 54, served as Steelers' quarterbacks coach from 2004-06, when he helped develop Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger went 13-0 as a rookie in 2004 and became the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl when he did so in his second season at age 23.
When Mike Tomlin took over the Steelers after the 2006 season, he fired Whipple, who was hired the next day by the Eagles. At the time, Shurmur was quarterbacks coach for the Eagles and Browns General Manager Tom Heckert served in that capacity in Philadelphia. Whipple was the Hurricanes' offensive coordinator in 2009-10 until Randy Shannon's staff was fired at the end of the season.
In addition to Jauron and Davis, the Eagles reportedly may interview at least one coach still in the playoffs, which can't happen until his team is eliminated. Mora told Fox Sports' Jay Glazer that he will take at least one more year off and continue as an analyst for NFL Network.

here comes the stache

I am not that concerned about our OC since Schurmer is going to be calling all of the place. My main concern for the OC position is a guy who has developed QB's in the past.

With regard to the defense, the stache will be fine with me if he gets the job. I would like to see the Browns go to a 4-3 and I believe he ran that when he was with the Cowboys under Jimmy Johnson. I know we don't have the same person now that the Cowboys did at that time but at least he knows the philosophy.

Our OC is going to have to do more than develop McCoy. We also have a FB playing RB who is a great player, but his career won't last long if he takes the kind of pounding he did this year and has no one behind him. So we need another RB...power or shifty? We have very young WRs (and we will get younger if as Mel Diaper Jr said last night we draft Green in round 1) who need seasoning in route running, getting separation, catching, everything. We have a big need for a RT that fits with our scheme. Oh, and we're revamping the entire offense to the WC. Yes Shurmur will call plays, but the new offensive staff is just as important as the new defensive staff to me, so when I see names like Musgrave and Whipple... :shake:

well we did draft hardesty so i think we should give him a chance if hes healthy...and that is a big IF...but i agree we need a 70/30 split on carries with Hillis if we plan on him playing more then 4 years...but he is a freak so who knows maybe he can last 12 years in this league being the feature back...i still say we draft a WR unless a Bowers, Fairley, Patterson or Marcellus are around...and i think with shumur as coach and a switch to the WC, then this just screams out 1st round offensive player to me

Yeah like I said above Mel Diaper Jr. said Green at our pick (#6 or whatever it is) last night on SC, and I believe that's probably right. That just means the new offensive staff will be as important as ever. I'm fine with Green, Lord knows Massaquoi and Robiskie will never be explosive or big play receivers, as long as we go defense and/or RT in subsequent rounds.

As for Hardesty I agree he's first in line, but there is no way anyone with a brain on the staff could possibly justify not having another viable RB on the roster because they think he's going to stay healthy in the long term. There HAS to be someone else we can get besides Mike Fucking Bell, cripes bring back Davis or Harrison if nothing else.

if we do go DT/CB in first round here is a list of potential WR FA

http://www.footballsfuture.com/2011/fa/wr.html

from that list that i really like, that i think we could have a shot if we back up the brinks truck, are Vincent Jackson, Steve Smith (NYG), Malcom Floyd (only if SD keeps vincent which is highly doubtful), Sidney Rice, Lance Moore, Santana Moss, Jacoby Jones

Any of these guys would help and are an upgrade over Stuckey, who is also a FA

I agree with what you have said in your past posts about the fact that we need more than a OC but he can't be responsible for developing every position on the team. I thought that was what specialty coaches such as a RB, WR, Oline, etc were for. I believe that the OC we hire will help develop our QB and the game plan with Shurmer .

Also, I don't know there are 40 times but I would almost rather draft Jones over Green. Jones just seems to have more mass and better hands than Green. I would move Robiskie to the slot.

The need for a RT is huge in the WCO and we will have to get one via free agency or in the second round (might be too high).

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Browns will interview former Cardinals defensive coordinator Billy Davis for the vacant DC position Thursday.
Former Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt will also be interviewed Thursday. Davis, who is also expected to interview for the Eagles' defensive coordinator job, was the DC for the Cardinals the last two seasons before being fired earlier this month. He has also coordinated the 49ers defense in the past and has been a linebackers coach at various stops.

Oh I agree and that's why I said "offensive staff" several times, but with the switch to a new philosophy the OC will be more important than usual in putting it all together, even if he doesn't call the plays. He's going to have his hands full getting Steinbach and Pork Chop to learn their new pulls, Mack to match his calls with the QB/WR calls, etc., along with getting the QB and WRs to match up with their routes and thinking. And that's just part of it.

Green, Jones, anyone who is worth a shit will do. I like some of the names on that list above but I think it would be better/easier to sign a RT and draft a WR rather than the other way around.

According to SI's Peter King, Rams OC Pat Shurmur is the "leader in the clubhouse" for the Browns' head coaching job.
A second-year offensive coordinator, Shurmur runs the West Coast offense club president Mike Holmgren will more fully implement in 2011, and has a history of quality quarterback coaching with Sam Bradford, Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb. Losing Shurmur could be a blow to Bradford. The Browns will also interview Marty Mornhinweg once the Eagles' postseason is over.

I hear that Rich Rod may be available:slappy:!
