Browns hire Shurmur as coach; Jauron could run defense

Another coach with Holmgren ties -- Dick Jauron -- also is being considered for the Browns' defensive coordinator position, a league source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora. Rob Ryan no longer is in the Browns' plans and will interview with the Dallas Cowboys about their defensive coordinator job.
Jauron, who was Holmgren's defensive backs coach in Green Bay in the early 1990s, also brings considerable head-coaching experience, going 60-82 in 10 seasons with the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions (on an interim basis) and Buffalo Bills. He would provide Shurmur with a strong infrastructure.
Jauron spent the 2010 season as the Philadelphia Eagles' secondary coach.

i still like ryan better

Jake nailed it.

It might be for the best too. I really enjoyed watching Ryan's defense, what he was able to do with less than stellar parts. I enjoyed watching him on the sidelines. However, over the course of this season, shortly after beating NO and NE in back-to-back games, I think Ryan may have gotten a little too full of himself. He did say during the season that he expected to be a head coach next year. Seriously, why would anyone say that during a current season?!? What message does that send to the team you are currently coaching?

I think that Ryan may think more highly of his abilities than the rest of the NFL does. He was never invited back for a second interview for the Carolina vacancy. Has he even been interviewed for any other vacancies?

Maybe this type of "arrogance" should leave Berea.

As for Shurmur...he needs to now get a decent staff together. I think the front office is in place and hopefully he has success with the Browns. Looking to see who he hires for OC and DC will be key and then watching the off season and our version of the Super Bowl (the draft) will hopefully get some enthusiasm going again in the off season.

I also concur about the hubris level emanating from Berea, i.e. Rob Ryan.
The Professor makes 3 key points, Ryan seemed to enjoy being the show, made public his desire for promotion and anticipated his value too highly after some temporary successes.
Ryan's defense did outperform the Brown's offense but it almost seemed like Ryan found pride in the fact that his defense was superior to the offense.
It also appears that Ryan's coaching qualifications did not impress the Panthers nor did they overwhelmingly impact what Holmgren values in a head coach to earn even a token loyalty interview with the Brown's.

If Ryan has the chance to be the DC in Dallas he should jump at it. From what I've heard Ryan didn't really want to come back to Cleveland as the DC.
No. He did not want to come back to Cleveland. All he did was talk about getting a new head coaching position after the end of the season. He talked about during the season. He thinks too much for himself plus the Cowboys run a 4-3 so we shall see but I highly doubt it if he gets that job. I do not think that Jerry Jones will like his Star Wars defense.

The Cowboys run a 3-4.

The Dallas Cowboys will hire Rob Ryan as their defensive coordinator, a team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

owner/general manager Jerry Jones on Friday. While Ryan still has a year left on his deal in Cleveland, the Browns will go in a different direction under new coach Pat Shurmur.

Ryan, the twin brother of New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, has spent the past two seasons as Cleveland's defensive coordinator after a five-year stint with the Oakland Raiders. He won two Super Bowl rings in New England as the Patriots' linebackers coach. His father, Buddy, was a longtime NFL coach and irked many Cowboys fans during his time in Philadelphia.
Cleveland had the 22nd-ranked defense in 2010, allowing 350.1 yards per game, and it was tied for 13th with 20.8 points allowed per game. The Cowboys allowed 351.8 yards and 27.3 points per game in 2010. While not tremendous numbers, the Browns defense improved nine spots in yards in 2010 and had a spike in turnovers with 19 interceptions and nine fumble recoveries.
The Cowboys are committed to the 3-4 defense, and Ryan is the third coordinator Garrett interviewed who has experience in that system. However, San Diego scooped up Greg Manusky, and San Francisco is reportedly set to keep Vic Fangio with new head coach Jim Harbaugh. Paul Pasqualoni, who closed the season as the Cowboys' coordinator, is now the head coach at UConn.

press conference for the shurminator going on right now...this is tony grossi's transcript of what is going on live if you cannot watch it...so far shurminator has said he will call the offensive plays at first

I dont know enough about the shurminator, but I do not like that thinks he is going to call the plays as the HC, it just doesn't work...

I think I agree and that might be the reason why McCoy decided to stay in Denver. Don't know how many HC's in the NFL call their own plays with so much other responsibility. It will be interesting to see who comes as the coordinator.
