Rams OC Pat Shurmur has emerged as the leading candidate in Cleveland and could get job by end of week

It was all over ESPN tonight too...I don't know shit about the guy, but considering some of the success other recent young coaches have had (Morris, Tomlin, etc.) I'm more than happy to give it a try. At least it isn't an epic fail recycle job like hiring Rich Kotite or something.

i like holmgren for one year and then gruden next year...i would feel bad if we had to fire shumur after one year to get gruden...who knows tho...maybe shumur can have success...i dont care if pee wee herman is our coach as long as we win

The Browns are not expected to retain DC Rob Ryan after hiring Pat Shurmur as head coach.
Per the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Ryan has been "out of the mix and out of the office despite being under contract." Unless Shurmur has someone specific in mind to run his defense, he'd do well to convince Ryan to stay.

well not sure i like this...depends i guess on who we hire is and what kind of defense he wants to implement...not sure how i would feel changing from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense....guess it all matters with who we bring in and get rid of on defense

We have 1 serviceable defensive lineman and 100,000 linebackers...if we switch to a 4-3 they had better be real active in FA and focus almost entirely on the DL in the draft. I hope they stick with Ryan and the 3-4...I don't think the defense was the biggest problem last year, at least schematically.

kiper said this draft is extremely deep at DT/DE which is good for the browns...especially if we go with WR in the first round...i see us making offense the top priority in the first round

Why get rid of Ryan? Dumb move. Wow.

It sounds to me like Ryan doesn't want to be there.

I really don't see what that would get you. Everyone expresses all this love for Gruden and he didn't do so well in the last couple years that he was at Tampa and I can't remember many teams coming after him to be their HC.

Ryan, as I have mentioned before, has stated numerous times since Mangini was fired that he wants to become a HC this year and I have not heard about any teams interested in him except for Carolina and that job is gone. It would not bother me in the least if Shurmer would bring in a new DC and run the 4-3. Most of our D-Lineman are pretty old in the tooth so we might as well start rebuilding there. We have enough LB's to keep the good ones and say bye-bye to the not so good ones.

PLEASE switch to a 4-3. I'll live with the growing pains. I fucking hate the 3-4.

I'll say the same thing I told Cowboys fans who wanted Gruden or another experienced HC instead of Garrett. There was a time when no one knew who the hell Jon Gruden was, either.

In the Browns case, Holmgren has a pretty good tree. He hired Reid and Gruden to work for him when they were young, and they've shown they can coach. I remember Shurmur's old man was very respected in the NFL and worked for Holmgren, so he has to know his kid pretty well.

Give him a chance, and don't expect miracles until they get some stability at QB and upgrade the receiving corps.

Oh I don't oppose it, but it will require a major overhaul of the defensive roster, and we still need DBs. I guess we have what...Fujita/Gocong/Roth with Barton, Benard, and Trusnik in reserve? Gonna have to cut pretty much everyone else at LB and pick up 4-5 DL that can actually play in an NFL game.
