Cleveland Browns (2010 season)

Status
Not open for further replies.
The Browns are reportedly interested in retaining DC Rob Ryan and/or special teams coordinator Brad Seely depending on the next head coach hire.
Ryan would have a much better chance to stick if the Browns hire an offensive-minded coach. Rams OC Pat Shurmur is considered the leader in the clubhouse, though Giants DC Perry Fewell is interviewing on Tuesday. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, former Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt is getting feelers from the Browns as well as the Chargers, Panthers, and Bills -- presumably as a defensive coordinator candidate.

So its looking like ???

Pat Shurmur HC
Dave Wannstedt OC
Rob Ryan DC

Is this what we want. I dont have an opinion anymore or care. Just put the people in there the win, make us competitive for more than one year and make some playoffs.

If anything Wannstedt would be the DC if Ryan moves on. If I were Holmgren my first priority after hiring an offensive minded HC would be to retain Ryan as the DC and Seely at ST. I'd offer Ryan more money than he made last year and full control of the D to get him to stay.

naughty naughty:! that link says absolutely nothing about the man with the stach

However, Ryan has said numerous times that if he does not get a HC position this year he will be very disappointed.

Cleveland Browns moving beyond Jon Gruden

BEREA, Ohio -- Scratch Jon Gruden as a candidate for the Browns coaching job.
Unless he changes his mind, Gruden intends to return to the ESPN broadcast booth in 2011.
At the conclusion of ESPN's radio coverage of the BCS Championship Game on Monday night, play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico asked Gruden if he would take one of the several coaching jobs he is rumored to be in line for.
"No. I'll be back with you," Gruden said.
That probably doesn't come as a surprise to the Browns. While Gruden has been mentioned high on the list of potential candidates to be Browns coach, he was not formally contacted by President Mike Holmgren for an interview.
This week, Jim Gruden, Jon's father, told The Plain Dealer that he was not sure whether whether his son "wants to get back into the rat race."
The elder Gruden explained that Jon has a son entering his senior year in high school who plays quarterback and linebacker and Jon immensely enjoys watching him play and also helps coach the team. Gruden still has one more season remaining on his contract as coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that pays him handsomely through 2011.

Hope you guys don't mind the anecdote, but it fits considering the article talks about Gruden and Tirico.

Jason Scukanek is one of the commentators on sports radio out here. He played football at BYU and then spent some time at Denver and Tampa Bay.

He was sharing on the radio yesterday about an awkward experience at a gym in Glendale. He's working out, and in comes Gruden and Tirico. Tirico and he make eye contact, speak, and start to have a conversation. Suke has slimmed down since his playing days, but he's still a big guy. Gruden and Tirico start to ask him about if he had any experience playing and this starts the awkward dialogue. He doesn't want to embarrass Gruden, but the question arises on who he played for when he was at TB. He says reluctantly, "Uhhh... I played for you". Gruden leaves very shortly to go lift while Tirico just starts laughing his ass off and whooping on Gruden. Sad thing is is that Gruden also forgot about coaching him the year previous. No Christmas cards coming in the near future. :slappy:

SI.com's Peter King is "hearing" that the Browns could have their new head coach in place by Thursday.
Rams OC Pat Shurmur is still considered the favorite. The Browns have yet to interview Eagles OC Marty Mornhinweg, which suggests he may not be a legit candidate after all. The Browns are now turning their attention to the defensive coordinator search, not a great sign for Rob Ryan's chances of being retained.

from chris mortensens chat earlier today:
Jamie (Pelham,Tn)
Hey Chris, was wondering what the Browns see in Pat Shurmur that other teams haven't yet? As far as I know the Browns seem to be the only team interested in him.

Chris Mortensen (11:09 AM)
I believe Shurmur's strong candidacy with the Browns is having a well thought-of assistant who is tied to the Mike Holmgren tree and allows the organizational to go forward with an identical philosophy. Shurmur was the longt-time QB coach under Andy Reid, who served under Holmgren as QB coach (not coordinator). Browns GM Tom Heckert was in Philly and observed Shurmur, who did a very nice job this year with Sam Bradford playing with a bunch of No. 3 receivers. He also is an ideal age, 45, for Holmgren to help mold. And, as you may know, Pat's uncle Fritz Shurmur was defensive coordinator under Holmgren during the GB Super Bowl years.

Mickey (Saint Louis)

If Pat Shurmur is such a great coaching candidate then why is everyone in Saint Louis praying that he gets the HC job and gets away from our up and coming Rams?

Chris Mortensen (11:20 AM)
Because fans are fans and have little clue about the nuances of running an offense with no receivers, a rookie QB (even a good one) and the directions from the head coach on how to compete, manage games to stay close and give yourself a chance to win. Winning games was a huge priority for the Rams and seven wins was a big leap. The next step forward is adding to the talent base and letting the offense breathe with more skill at WR and I'd say even a RB who can break off some big runs as a change of pace with S. Jackson.
