Well, I dont see this team being very active in big name FA - smart money would be on the offensive line built through the draft. Which IMHO we've done solid on so far. Obviously one of the few bright spots on this team are Thomas and Mack drafted under our colors. Good stuff there.
Matter of preference. I just don't think you pass up on a guy like Mallett or Luck if you need a QB. Neither one of them are Clausen. Ideally, I agree about building the OL through the draft.

Kolb has the physical attributes you want - maybe Holmgren thinks he can put on his wizard hat and put the rest together? I'm not sure how that's going to shake out though.
I fail to see why anybody was enamored by him. From what I've seen, his arm is only above average, he's not very mobile and his decision making is shaky. Maybe somebody (not this coaching staff) could mold him into a good qb, but he's not worth pursuing IMO.

I agree about Harrison. Hardesty, I think you and I have the same view. I just want to see Davis though. I understand he hasn't made much outside of a pre-season game. But he was considered far and wide, a steal in the draft by many.

His injury really didn't help and it think it would be best for this organization to get a better look at him if Harrison continues to be mediocre or the Moose keeps fumbling.
I can't remember with certainty, but I think most of the steal talk started after he had a big game against Detroit. After that, he looked pretty average-to-bad, then got hurt. I think he's another Jennings-type...and those are a dime a dozen. Doesn't really matter, until they improve the right side of that line, nobody's gonna do much.

Daboll is garbage, and like I said - I'm sure most of us would take 1/10 of what the man is making and still run a better show.
You ain't joking...

The only thing I like about Mangini is that he's a bit of a hardass. Not only that but, for the all the middle of-the-road talent we have on defense, he's gotten them to play very hard and (collectively) quite well.
I think this is more Rex Ryan than Mangini. When Mangini inevitably gets the axe, I hope Ryan is at least given a fair shake to keep his job because I think he's done quite well given what he has to work with.

Again, a few bright spots. We have a very solid foundation for the Oline (left side) young and promising WR's. A potentially solid defensive secondary with young talent and obviously Cribbs - the best return man and a very dangerous offensive weapon.
Thomas and Mack are good building blocks on the OL, agreed. I don't know what we have at WR. Is their production bad because the qbs can't get them the ball, or are the qbs as bad as they are because the receivers just aren't that good? I think it's a mixed bag. I do like what I've seen from the secondary and will gladly eat crow on Ward if he keeps it up. My worry on Cribbs is that elite return men have relatively short shelf lives and he may not have much time left.

His career numbers indicate he's not much better that Wallace and given the supporting cast, I doubt he could produce much better than Seneca did last week. At least Wallace is mobile. Kolb is a statue and would get killed by the right side of this line. I think there's gonna be a couple of qbs sitting up there that will be worth the top-10 pick next year in Mallett & Luck...it's just a matter of the Browns not fucking themselves over with meaningless wins like they do every year so that they're in the position to draft him. No point in trading a draft choice for a guy who looks like nothing more than a mediocre player anyway. Not to mention they still have Colt, who I think everybody is being a little quick to write off...

I don't think anyone has seen enough of Kolb to know whether or not he's good or bad. He's still young, hasn't really had the opportunity to start. He's less of a risk than a top-10 QB, I feel like Kolb has shown more than an unproven rookie who would likely cost the team a retarded amount of money and potentially handicap them in the future. Just think if the Browns can get him for good value it's a pretty low-risk move. You guys said it right when you said the lines win and lose games in the NFL. I'd rather the Browns spend a third round pick on someone who has more experience and has at least shown something in the NFL than a top-10 QB who could potentially make a ridiculous amount of money.

Spend the big picks to get weapons around the QB or defensive help, spend a third rounder on a guy who could potentially be the starter of the future. I don't see the downside of trading a pick that'd likely end up being a backup player for someone who would start right now.

I'm not enamored with Kolb either, which is why I'm trying to make it clear that it should be out of the question if the Eagles want more than a third.. but for a third? Potential starter? Fuck yeah.

I agree but only if it is for a third. We might as well take a look at a guy who has some NFL experience and not another rookie. There is too much of a learning curve for a rookie QB to step right in.

On another note, Jake with a high ankle sprain (see link) will probably be out again this week and perhaps longer. Just hope that the Ratbirds don't get to Wallace because with our O-line McCoy would take a beating.

BEREA - The injury to Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme is a high ankle sprain, a league source confirmed....

I agree, but he's more proven than a rookie, and would be the starter. That much value for a third rounder is excellent. It's the contract that lowers his value. He's still young and mostly unproven, but he's at least shown he has the ability to start. A small sample size, definitely, but definitely worth a third rounder if you're the Browns.

I don't really see it as grasping for straws unless they give up more than a third. A starting QB for a third rounder would be great, but that's also why I don't think he'll be traded. The Eagles won't let go of a QB they thought could start for their team for just a third rounder. If someone overpays, I'm looking at Oakland. They're [censored]ing stupid over there.

I'd rather them hold on to the first and seconds and get some other impact players in the draft. But if they get Kolb for what he's worth, awesome.

It's a bad way to build a team. Why lock yourself to a starting QB that has limited potential to get you to the playoffs, let alone a superbowl. It's a quick way to make your team bad/mediocre for an even longer amount of time. Either draft Mallet next year, or see what you have in Colt, but trading for Kolb forces the management to be stubburn and stick with him longer in the event he sucks out of stubburnness.

The good news is, I highly doubt the Eagles trade him this season when Vick is 30.

I would imagine the Browns were just kicking the tires IF in fact they called. The Eagles are a trading partner. Vick will be a free agent after this season. With the labor situation in 2011, the Eagles could lose him unless they sign him long term by the end of the season. This would make Kolb expendable. The Eagles did not give Kolb assurances that they would not trade him by the 10/19 trading dealine. Vick needs the $$ to satisfy creditors. The Eagles may try and sign him to a deal if he keeps playing well. Stay tuned.

* Right tackle John St. Clair, who left the Ravens game with an ankle injury, will be idle today. Tony Pashos replaced him in Baltimore and Mangini was pleased with his outing.

* The defensive line will be thin today, with three starters resting with injuries: Shaun Rogers (ankle, hip), Robaire Smith (back) and Kenyon Coleman.

* Rookie right guard Shawn Lauvao will return to practice after missing the first three games with an ankle injury.
same article says that Jake is still shaky for the Bungles
I would rather see Pashos play RT than St. Clair

I would rather see Pashos play QB than Delhomme at this point if he still can't push off that foot. He was completely worthless after that injury against TB...if he is even the slightest bit hampered, Mangini NEEDS to go with Wallace.

Okay if the above does not work out we finally got something here with a rookie of the year from the Canadian football league:eek:

According to FoxSports.com's Adam Caplan, the Cleveland Browns have signed RB Martell Mallett, a running back from Arkansas Pine-Bluff who did extremely well in the Canadian Footabll League as a rookie in 2009. After signing with the BC Lions as an undrafted free agent, Mallett gained a single-game franchise record 213 yards against the Montreal Alouettes and was given the CFL's equivalent of the rookie-of-the-year award.

Tom Heckert's Philadelphia connection is alive and well with this signing. Mallett was signed by the Eagles in January of this year, and was with the team through cut-downs on 9/3. He was re-signed to the Eagles practice squad, but cut once again on 9/21.

Can't say I am surprised by whats going on. This team is garbage and it wont change anytime soon. We are the Browns, this is what we do. Always 5 years away and rebuilding. Guess its a good thing the Browns didnt take a real WR or QB in the draft last year, just chumming the waters with mid round picks expecting one to eventually hit is not the way to go.

Reading some of the posts from the guys that are "defense above all else" I am surprised no one is talking about spending the first few picks on defense, especially pass rushers.
