Cleveland Browns (2009 Season)

Denver cut Dre Bly today. Here are my thoughts on him, and why I think the Browns should take a look at him.

Throughout his career he's excelled (excelled is too strong of a word) as the #1 corner, but been a disappointment as the #2 guy. He looked very average when Champ Bailey was healthy this year, but he really stepped up his game when Bailey was out. Denver hasn't had a good cover safety since he's been there, and they always put tremendous pressure on their corners. That's why I still think Champ Bailey is the best CB in the world, but that's a different story. His underachieving is somewhat misleading IMO, due to the pressure Denver puts on the corners and the lack of talent at the safety positions.

I'd be surprised if he commanded a ton of money due to him being cut and his performance lapses in recent years. I think he'd be the Browns #1 guy, but even if he weren't #1, he'd be a strong #2. Much better than McDonald from what I've seen, even when he's not playing his best.

I've always liked Bly, and wouldn't mind seeing him come here, but our safeties suck in coverage too. He would definitely have to step it up to the level that you think he played at while Champ was out.

Cleveland Browns' Kokinis says team in good shape entering Combine talent search
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Tuesday February 17, 2009, 6:46 PM

CLEVELAND -- The Browns have not negotiated with any of their 13 potential free agents and don't appear willing to use the franchise tag on Sean Jones to protect themselves from losing the safety.

NFL teams have until Thursday to apply the franchise designation to one potential free agent. Doing so would guarantee the player the average of the five highest-paid players at his position and restrict his movement. The franchise number for safeties is $6.342 million. Jones had a base salary in 2008 of $2.145 million.

There is no way in the world that I would tag Jones for that amount of money. I would think if you are going to shell out that type of money you could get a much better player.

The Browns are in such desperate need for bodies in the DB I would jump at the chance to sign Bry. Of course, it would depend on how much he is asking but he certainly would be an upgrade over anything we currently have.

I just have a feeling that Everette Brown is going to be a BUST. I hope to God it isn't him that the Browns pick.
Well, I have seen stick arms Maybin's name thrown around in some mock drafts and that would be worse than Brown IMO

As I've said before, I love Jenkins but we are desperate for LBs.

If we take all DBs and OLBs out of the equation, I was wondering what you guys thought of Ray M...... I am just asking so don't go wacky on me.

I'll be furious if they pick him. He's a Kamerion Wimbley clone and we don't need two of him.

while i don't advocate picking brown, he's not even comparable to wimbley.

brown was actually productive while at fsu and has 3 viable moves compared to wimbley's one.

the hype on brown is based on his actual on the field play, vs. shooting up draft charts during the combine like wimbley.

the only thing similar about them is the school and position.

Do you remember where he (K. W.) was ranked pre-combine

May Be the Lions Want to Deal

Cleveland Browns should not discount the Detroit Lions in quarterback trade talks
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Thursday February 19, 2009, 11:51 AM

INDIANAPOLIS -- When handicapping possible trade partners for Derek Anderson, maybe the Detroit Lions shouldn't be totally ignored.

With so many needs to fill on their 0-16 team, it's no cinch they will select Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford with the first overall pick in the draft. Stafford is not considered ready to step in as a rookie, a la Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco.

New coach Jim Schwartz might opt for Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry to upgrade his 4-3 defense immediately.

But Schwartz and his new staff will want to turn the page and start fresh with a young quarterback around which to build. Anderson, 26, qualifies.

They sure have enough draft choices that they could do some type of deal with our Browns.

From the same article
The Lions bought some time on a decision about Culpepper by restructuring his contract and postponing a $2 million-plus roster bonus until sometime in March.

The Lions own the first and 20th picks in the first round, the top pick of the second round and two picks in the third round.

One flaw about Stafford's game is inconsistency, the same knock against Anderson.

Sounds like a selling point for the Browns to me. Why spend a No. 1 pick on something like that when you can get the same thing (with experience) and use the top pick on another need?

(...because they're the Lions, I know.)

At NFL's scouting combine, Browns hoping to find draft diamonds among college hopefuls
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Wednesday February 18, 2009, 6:27 PM

INDIANAPOLIS -- Nobody has accused the Browns' new management team of being warm and fuzzy. Coach Eric Mangini and General Manager George Kokinis haven't even met most of their own players in roughly one month on the job.

But they intend to get personal here at the NFL scouting combine with the handful of college players they may be considering to select with the No. 5 pick in the April draft.

While a lot of attention is devoted to the bench-press reps and 40 time clockings of those players who agree to work out, the Browns are hoping to gain their edge in making judgments based on face-to-face interviews.

"Yeah, I think the interviews are a big part of it," Kokinis said. "You want to get at least a preliminary feel of what that kid is all about. Sometimes first impressions are the lasting ones. So you get a chance to look a guy in the eye, get a good handshake, let him tell you what he knows about the game of football.

"From here going forward, I think that's extremely important for this football team. We want to get players that really love the game of football, not just what it brings but what it is.

"I think you get that by meeting somebody face to face and then matching it with how they play on the field. So if their words match their actions, you get a little bit of a marriage and you feel good about picking that player."

the remainder of the article talks about the Browns needs and who they might take in addition to talking about Ohio State players and how they are looking at the combine.

I would take a third and say a fifth rounder for Anderson right now from the Lions. Which to me is pretty good value with everything considered. I have no idea how plausible that is but we need draft picks.
That was seeing more than fair to me and, if they wanted, they could even draft Stafford for more value. I really don't care what they do just give the Browns some draft choices.

i'd be willing to bet the browns can get more than that for anderson. look at the pitiful qb draft, and the pitiful FA crop. someone will overpay for him.
