Cleveland Browns (2009 Season)

Let me get this straight, Cribbs wants a new deal. Claims the owner and old regime promised him one. Owner says not true. 4 years left on contract. New regime not sure where he will play. I'd get back in camp and start showing something. He's not going anywhere with 4 years left and a labor agreement coming up. No leverage. No trade. this is a stand off that will fail and will show players the new regime means business even with one of their best players. I like Cribbs alot but a deal is a deal.

He makes so little that it would be nothing for the Browns to sit on his contract the next 4 years so there will be no trade unless the Browns can get something really good in return. I'm sure they'll figure it all out and give him a slight raise. His old agent really needs to be shot for that 6 year deal. If they were only offering a mill a year he should have gone for a 2-3 year deal. Cribbs really has very little leverage.

But I think we all agree they should make some effort to up his salary to around 3 mil/yr. I think that's fair and he should be happy with that.

Bottom line is, return specialists generally don't have a very large window of prime effectiveness. Dante Hall was dominant for about 3-4 years, Mel Gray back in the day about the same. Devin Hester's numbers were way down last year. Josh is heading into his 4th year, so if history teaches us anything, his best days are coming to an end...

So that is why he is wanting a big payday.

I highly doubt they are actually looking for Hester money. At this point, I'm sure Cribbs is sick of looking like a liar. There is no doubt in my mind that Lerner told Cribbs they would re-work his deal.

When an agent comes out and says they have proof of a phone conversation with the owner, it better be true. From the jump though, knowing Josh's character, it seemed unlikely he was lying.

I can understand Kokinos and Mangini not feeling obligated to uphold agreements made with Phil Savage, or even Lerner, but if I'm Cribbs, and I was told by the owner that my contract would be revisited, and then the Cleveland Browns release a statement that is not true.......I'm [censored]ed.
I don't know Randy Lerner personally so I am not defending him on that basis but he is a very successful businessman who has done a lot of negotiating over the years so I don't know why you are taking Cribbs his word over Lerner's. I will admit that Joshua seems like a standup guy but for an agent to say they have proof of a telephone call just doesn't cut it with me. If they were taping a phone call with the owner of the Browns organization, they are in deep trouble.

Now if Savage or Romeo promised a new deal without Lerner's knowledge that is a completely different ballgame. This probably will all be mute by the start of mandatory camp next week because I am sure they will get something done. I just couldn't understand why you would take one person's word over another when both of them are very reputable people.

The idea that Lerner would promise Cribbs a new deal strikes me as kind of odd. It seems to me that Lerner is more concerned with European sports than he is the Browns. If this were Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder then I would have no problem believing the promise. However, my impression is that Lerner's a hands off owner. Hopefully he leaves these kind of dealings to his football people.

and oddly enough, when cribbs issued his letter to the fans yesterday he never mentioned any sort of promise from lerner or anyone else. instead, he played the "i have to support my family" card in a desperate attempt to gain sympathy. the entire holdout and trade demand ploy perpetrated by his new agent so he could get a piece of the pie seems to be blowing up in cribbs' face.

Cribbs might be my favorite player on the team along with Joe Thomas. That said, if he's serious about all of this I wouldn't hesitate to part with him yesterday. He's highly replaceable on virtually any team more competent than the Browns.

Go grab Ted Ginn. All he did was return about 4-5 kicks for tds (ignoring some bogus flags), but the dolphins clearly aren't interested in his services there. They like safe, short returns with Bess.
