Cleveland Browns (2009 Season)

Go grab Ted Ginn. All he did was return about 4-5 kicks for tds (ignoring some bogus flags), but the dolphins clearly aren't interested in his services there. They like safe, short returns with Bess.
Dolphins like him as a receiver they are just waiting to get a number one receiver to utilize him and for Henne to become the starter.

Cleveland Browns expected to sign CB Roderick Hood
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Tuesday May 26, 2009, 11:16 AM

CLEVELAND -- The Browns will sign veteran free agent cornerback Roderick Hood, a league source said.

Hood started for the Arizona Cardinals in last season's Super Bowl. He was the team's starting cornerback for 30 of the previous 32 regular-season games, intercepting six passes, including five in 2007.

Hood, 5-11 and 198 pounds, was released by the Cardinals shortly after the draft in April. He had visited with Cincinnati, Detroit, Chicago and the Rams. Hood chose the Browns over the Rams, who also had made him a contract offer, the source said.

Hood, 27, played his first four NFL seasons with Philadelphia. He should be considered a strong candidate to displace Eric Wright or Brandon McDonald as a starter at cornerback.

Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Cribbs to report to minicamp on Tuesday
by Mary Kay Cabot / Plain Dealer Reporter
Monday May 25, 2009, 10:20 PM

Browns receiver Josh Cribbs will report to voluntary minicamp today after skipping the first camp last week, his agent, J.R. Rickert, said in a text Monday night.

Cribbs missed all three voluntary practices last week because he was waiting for the Browns to engage in "meaningful dialogue" regarding a new contract.

"Josh Cribbs will report to practice on Tuesday," Rickert said in the text. "He is making this good-faith effort to show everyone just how important this is to him. We will continue to communicate with the Browns on a regular basis and we are optimistic that there will be a fair solution."

Cribbs, who has four years remaining on a six-year, $6.77 million contract, is looking for a deal similar to the four-year, $40 million contract receiver Devin Hester signed with the Chicago Bears last off-season.

Cribbs is one of two players who boycotted the first week of voluntary minicamp. The other is kicker Phil Dawson, who also might be seeking a new deal.

Browns coach Eric Mangini requested Cribbs call him last week, and Cribbs went to the facility on Thursday to meet with him in person. He also attended a full-squad meeting.

Rickert has said Cribbs will ask to be traded if the Browns tell him they won't redo his deal. In addition to playing on offense and special teams, Cribbs is working at strong safety and could challenge for the nickel-back role. Mangini warned Cribbs during their meeting that a lot of the playbook was being installed and that he was losing valuable ground.

This is how he should have done it in the first place. Show the new regime your versatility and left them evaluate your worth and you will come out of a better player/person.

I think we might be okay on defense with the latest signing of Hood but I am still concerned about our two OLB's. Somebody needs to step up at those positions.

the fact that cleveland has made no real effort to look at OLB options on the FA market would indicate that they are at least willing to see what they have in Hall and Wimbley before addressing it via FA. Hall was taking 1st team reps ahead of Bowens in mini-camp so who knows. if veikune can give them anything, the position is decent enough to get through '09.

Wimbley has shown that he has the potential to be a good pass rusher, I think they're waiting to see what they have in him. The defensive line has been improved, too, so that should help the LBs.

But I do agree with you. I was surprised at the lack of upgrades at OLB.

EDIT: I wouldn't expect Veikune to add too much this year. Apparently Mangini's defense is pretty hard to grasp right away, hence all the ex-Jets coming to town. That's part of the reason Veikune was drafted, but still.

The problem with Wembley and Hall it is not only their lack of pass rushing skills:! but they really need to get better on stuffing the run from the outside. Both of them have toothpicks for arms. Hopefully, Wembley can pick up from his rookie year and Hall, well, I just don't know if that was too big of a reach.

Not sure how you can even think of Hall being a reach considering he was a 7th rounder. The guy was from a tiny school, got a decent amount of playing time for a coach who was very hesitant to play young guys and looks like he has pretty good upside.

Let me refrain. It was not a "reach" because of his drafting position but it was because of the gaping hole that needed to be filled this last year at OLB which was really mad addressed by the former regime.

part of the issue with the prior regime not filling the OLB spot had to do with Peek waiting until after the draft to have his knee explode. they were counting on him to be in the OLB rotation, if not start.

as it stands, there are 3 OLB that have experience there, 2 of which are young and have shown flashes of promise, with the 3rd being a solid contributor with the jets. you also have a rookie coming in as well. given that, and the fact that a lot of the roster has been turned over already, you can see why this hasn't been addressed yet.
