Cleveland Browns (2009 Season)

I"m not sure about you guys, but I find the chance of landing another cribbs to be rather exciting.

I won't lie, I dogged on Pat's throwing, but damn he did pretty well in the Senior Bowl and throwing drills.

He could be a great red-zone threat in the wildcat, I think it would be a huge weapon and jump start to this offense to consider him.

No thanks on White, unless it were in the later rounds which at the moment does not look like he will be around then. Too many needs to invest in a guy similar to someone we already have.

If he falls to the 3rd-4th, I have no issue trying to grab him... Maybe 2nd round is a stretch.

Well we have no 3rd rounder and our 2nd rounders are too valuable IMO to use on a guy that only fills a niche that is already filled on our team. Personally with our first three picks we gotta get a safety, running back, and linebacker. Or even two linebackers. Plus it looks like we are gonna need a wide out too.

NFL Owners Meetings: Mangini seeks flexibility in linemen, a running back of any age
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Wednesday March 25, 2009, 9:23 PM

DANA POINT, Calif. -- Browns coach Eric Mangini gave some clarity to a few position competitions other than quarterback at NFL owners meetings this week.

Defensive line

He wants six guys and wants most of them to be able to play any of the three line positions.

"Then you can create matchups against an opponent where you may want Shaun [Rogers] at end, just because you like the matchup against that [offensive] tackle, or you may want him at the left side instead of the right side," Mangini said. "You want to be able to spin it however you want to spin it."

He said he's been impressed with video review of Robaire Smith's 2007 season and is "excited" about having the end back for 2009. Smith missed last season after Achilles tendon surgery.

Offensive line

New free-agent additions Floyd Womack and John St. Clair will join Ryan Tucker and Rex Hadnot to compete for the two starting spots on the right side. Hadnot is the only one who hasn't played tackle.

"We're going to play the best players," Mangini said.

Running back

Jamal Lewis turns 30 before the season and Jason Wright left for Arizona in free agency. Jerome Harrison and free agent Noah Herron probably will be joined by another back from free agency or the draft.

"We'll look and see what opportunities there are," Mangini said. "There are a lot of backs over 30 who have been very productive. I don't think that age is necessarily the determining factor [in a decline]."

Eric Mangini's commitment to suspense: Bud Shaw's Sports Spin
by Bud Shaw/Plain Dealer Columnist
Thursday March 26, 2009, 2:50 AM

Eric Mangini says there will be open competition for the QB job.

The scary thing is he might really be serious when he says he's looking forward to it.

But mostly the Browns head coach appears to be keeping his options open and trying to protect the value of his tradeable assets.

Why declare or even project a starter now? There's absolutely nothing to be gained from doing that in March.

Mangini covers himself on every possible front by saying the team will embrace all opportunities to improve itself, including trades.

If teams want to trade for one of your quarterbacks, no sense advertising now which one you prefer.

I still think that's the route the Browns will go. They'll trade Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn.

Cleveland Browns to host locals Hoyer, Massey, Boone
by By Mary Kay Cabot
Thursday March 26, 2009, 12:49 PM

Michigan State quarterback Brian Hoyer, Michigan tight end Mike Massey and Ohio State offensive tackle Alex Boone are among a handful of local players who will work out for the Browns April 14 in Berea.

Only local players are permitted to work out when they visit teams. Other draft eligible players can interview when they visit, but not work out.
Hoyer, a North Olmsted native and St. Ignatius grad, is projected to go in one of the middle rounds of the draft. Massey, from Brecksville and St. Ignatius, will most likely sign as an undrafted free agent, and Boone, from Lakewood and St. Ed's, could go in a later round.

Hoyer, who worked out at St. Ignatius Thursday, said it would be a dream to play for the Browns, who might need a No. 2 quarterback if they trade either Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn.

Broncos linked to another QB trade

Let's suppose for a moment that new Denver coach Josh McDaniels really does have an interest in trading for Brady Quinn -- or at least he did at one time. Yes, he may have been trying to steal Shaun Rogers in a package that included Quinn with Jay Cutler and a third team involved. But the point was McDaniels asked for Quinn, not Derek Anderson. 2. When it came time to pick between Quinn and Anderson, the former QB coach and erstwhile offensive coordinator for Bill Belichick in New England favored Quinn. 3. Yes, the son of famed Ohio high school coach Thom McDaniels could be wrong. Yes, the former John Carroll quarterback could be perhaps overly influenced by Charlie Weis, the former New England offensive coordinator and current Notre Dame coach who insists Quinn will be an impact NFL quarterback. But the fact is when McDaniels was hired by Denver, he had an uneasy feeling about Cutler. First, he tired to trade for Matt Cassel, who went to Denver. Then, he checked out Quinn.

The interesting point of the above article if it is the same one that I am trying to recall is that the Browns did not want to give Denver Quinn but offered Anderson and the Broncos said no deal which, the writer, thought that the Browns were blowing smoke about Quinn not being there #1 choice to be the starting QB at the beginning of training camp.

Bears add veteran offensive tackle Shaffer
By Brad Biggson March 25, 2009 3:31 PM

Almost a week after the Bears concluded their minicamp with a player they wanted to play at left guard manning the right tackle position, they have found an offensive tackle.

The club has agreed to terms with veteran Kevin Shaffer on a three-year contract. The 29-year-old was released earlier this month by the Cleveland Browns, who essentially replaced him with John St. Clair. Check back soon for more details.
almost like making a trade

Broncos will try to trade unhappy QB Cutler
by Arnie Stapleton, Associated Press
Tuesday March 31, 2009, 9:58 PM

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -- The Denver Broncos said Tuesday they will grant Jay Cutler his request and try to trade the disgruntled Pro Bowl quarterback.

There is no shortage of teams interested in the 25-year-old rocket-armed quarterback whose unhappy offseason began with Mike Shanahan's firing and has haunted new coach Josh McDaniels' budding regime.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen released a statement saying both he and McDaniels had been unable to get Cutler to call them back over the last 10 days. Bowlen said he spoke with Cutler's agent, Bus Cook, on Tuesday and came away convinced "that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos."

Therefore, Bowlen said, "We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded."

Still don't know if I would want him in Cleveland. I know that he is a very good QB blow would he become a malcontent with the Browns like he is with Denver. I think we have enough of them.

I don't think the Browns want Cutler. But I am pretty sure the Browns would love to be involved in any Cutler trade, shipping either Anderson or Quinn to Denver for picks.

I'd take Cutler. IMO, he is a damn fine QB that has proven he can make plays even on a average team. I wouldn't give up my entire draft for him but I'd give up a 2nd and one of our QB's for him if that's what it would take.

That ain't even close. Rumors are they want a QB and two 1st rounders.
