Cleveland Browns (2009 Season)

I've just read the last six or seven pages of this thread, and I have to say this is the most depressing reading I have done in a long, long time.

'Meet the new boss - just the same as the old boss".

We go from a guy who only drafts kids from a school in FL or the ACC, to a guy who only takes NE rejects coupled with a GM who only takes Ravens rejects, and now we have a coach who only signs Jets rejects or over-the-hill rejects from wherever, who gets rid of the best football player on the team, and [censored]es off one of the 2 or 3 decent defensive players we have.

We will once again have the worst LB corps in the league, as well as a very shaky secondary.
Now we won't even fix the problems on the o-line, and to top it off, the only receiver we are likely to keep is the d*****bag who can't catch the ball.
And the QB with the 75 IQ is getting paid how many millions in bonus money? And then he will likely be sitting on the bench or get traded anyway.

I can't wait to see what kind of clusterf*** they make out of this draft. Maybe we can trade all of our draft picks to the Jets for their next 5 worst players?

I've been a Browns fan since birth, and that goes back to the end of the Jim Brown / Paul Warfield era, and I grew up watching the Leroy Kelly / Jerry Sherk teams. And I have to admit, I started rooting for the Ravens toward the end of the year last year, simply because I respect the great players they have and for how they play the game. I don't see any chance of this new regime doing anything remotely necessary to building a winner over the long term.
they should be doing everything they can to stockpile as many draft picks as possible - not signing a bunch of guys who can't make anybody else's roster. Pick up one or two KEY players each year through FA, and build the team up with young talent through the draft - that is the key for long term success.

in order to guarantee several years at the helm, one must lower expectations to a point even Browns have never seen. Nothing like destroying what we had left of a team, and completely rebuilding yet again. The good news is, Kokinos and Mangini will be able to reiterate all season, "this is a rebuilding process". Good work guys.

As a sidenote, I liked the Mangini hire, I thought he'd take the previous group, and get max effort out of them. Now, all expectations have fallen through the floor, and this is the least excited I have been for the draft and upcoming season as far as I can remember.

I have no problem with this team getting blown up. These "good" players led the Browns to a top-5 draft pick and didn't score an offensive TD for two months to close out the season. Even before the regime change, this team was a few solid draft choices/signings away from being a 6-win team this year.

Meanwhile, what exactly were people expecting out of free agency? The Browns have been back for ten years now, and you still have legit players saying the same things Chris Cooley said about coming to Cleveland. The Browns still have to settle for scraps or overpay in free agency or trades to get decent veteran players. How does that change? By building the foundation for a better team through the draft and by doing more on the field with less resources to turn around that reception, that's how.

It may be "same shit different day" the new day has hardly started. The new regime hasn't drafted a single player yet. It hasn't won or lost a single game yet. And meanwhile they are being hamstrung by a solid decade of bad football and bad decisions that is hurting the perception of the franchise as well as the real ability re: the salary cap to make any positive moves of significance.

I understand your point, but they were a game away from the playoffs 2 years ago. What happened?

IMO, Crennel was soft, and the players weren't ready mentally or physically. A guy like John Harbaugh maybe gets the Browns to the playoffs, last year.

There are multiple examples of first year coaches coming in and turning the ship around. When Mangini was hired, I thought he'd be the type of guy to do that. Apparently, they have a much different agenda, and want to rebuild......again.

What is this, about the 4th rebuild since the expansion Browns?

Been a long day, I needed that laugh.

What was the difference between the 2007 Browns and 2008 Browns? They won 10 games, and turned to [censored].

Harbaugh took a crappy Ravens team, lit a fire under them, and got them to the playoffs.

Would Parcells and Sparano been a better statement? Miami won 1 game in 2007, and made the playoffs last year.

How's that for a laugh?

They had the easiest schedule in the league and Phil Dawson's kicks doinked in the right direction.

I don't think the schedule and luck get enough credit for success in the NFL.

Schedule or not, their level of play was on another level in 07. They didn't give a shit what happened last year.

I've brought it up before, but the season was over as soon as Troy Aikman stated in week 1, that Browns players told him they were already looking ahead to week 2 becuase they knew Dallas was going to win. In Aikman's words, "the Browns conceded defeat before the game even started".

The difference is, both of those teams won with defense... the Browns defense is awful. I say if they are going to blow up the team and rebuild, fine. But do it the right way. Build it like Baltimore or like Shitsburgh and start with defense, and worry about building a highpowered offense later. We'll have a better chance of winning with a hell of a defense and a mediocre offense than the opposite. Baltimore is proof of that.

The one thing that is keeping me even paying attention at this point is the fact that Mangini took over a very bad Jets team and led them to the playoffs his first season. He can coach. Hopefully there is some more reason for excitement after the draft.

what's comical is that cleveland is basically using the same formula that miami did to make the playoffs last year, but you're bitching about it.

The Redskins "win" free agency every single year. They are also a huge disappointment every single year. I like what the powers that be are doing with this team. Getting guys that know the system and trying to reaquire draft picks.

You got that right on the head! You can't coach chemistry. Free agency will do nothing for you if team chemistry isn't there. Look at the Bills and TO. Decent young QB, good young RB and they bring that poison into the locker room. He's already skipping the voluntary workouts. I'm not saying that vets need to be at every work out, but your a new guy on a new team and you should be chomping at the bit to work with your new QB. Not TO. Look what the Patriots do every year in free agency and in the draft. Look where they draft every year and look how they win every year. Shit, last year was a down year for them and they won 10 games. They draft a guy like Logan Mankins at the tail end of the first round and everyone says "Who the hell is Logan Mankins" and now the guy is an All Pro.

The Browns on the other hand draft near the top for the last decade and have shit to show for it.

They fucking suck. Good Lord they fucking suck.
