Cleveland Browns (2009 Season)

Maybe this guy will provide some depth for us along the d-line I do not know much about him.

Defensive end C.J. Mosley is first former New York Jet to land with Cleveland Browns

CLEVELAND -- The first ex-Jet signed by the Browns in the Eric Mangini era is defensive end C.J. Mosley.

Mosley and the Browns agreed to a two-year contract for about $5 million Friday night.

Mosley played the last three seasons under Mangini with the Jets. He entered the league as a sixth-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2005 and was traded to New York during the '06 training camp.

Mosley made three starts in 35 games with the Jets. He had five sacks in those three years.

This is from the New York Giants team page.

I would trade Edwards for some high draft choices. I don't want to do a complete rebuild but I think after next season he is going to ask for an outrageous contract if he does not have the dropsies like he did last season.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese is faced with two opposite conundrums. He has way too many draft picks (10 for sure, perhaps 11 depending on compensatory assignments) and he has a team strong and young enough at most positions so that a flood of new blood isn't exactly mandatory.

The Giants received an additional second and fifth from New Orleans in the trade of tight end Jeremy Shockey last summer, and will certainly receive one for running back Derrick Ward, who signed in Tampa Bay. Pending other UFA developments (such as strong safety James Butler, who is flirting with several teams but at this writing hasn't signed a contract), there might be a total of 11.

So Reese dropped a minor bombshell the other day. "Maybe we won't have that many picks by the time the draft arrives," he said, cryptically.

That opened the door to the expected wave of speculation, and shortly thereafter rumors wafted by the team's offices concerning wide receivers Braylon Edwards of Cleveland and Torry Holt of St. Louis. The Giants appear desperate in their need of an impact wideout to replace Plaxico Burress, who might be back but must negotiate through a legal morass you lie first. He has a March 31 hearing stemming from gun changes last Nov. 29.

Without Burress, as well as the probable departure of 34-year-old veteran Amani Toomer, both starters who opened the season will be gone. There simply isn't a proven, accomplished replacement on the roster, and the Giants will have to do one (or more) of three things: make do with the likes of Steve Smith, Sinorice Moss, Domenik Hixon, Mario Manningham and a few others; spend a first-round draft pick (and probably another one later on) to find a replacement; or make a trade.

If the compensation was right, I wouldn't be totally opposed. There's only a few guys I definitely don't want us to get rid of, and Edwards isn't really one of them. Besides, I'm tired of having to root for guys from colleges teams that I don't like (him, KWII, Brady).

I really don't care, to a certain extent, what college a player goes to when he turns professional as long as he will help the Cleveland Browns. Now if there are two players that are almost equal, I might look at what college they attended but otherwise as long as they would help the Browns it really doesn't matter to me. Just keep your mouth shut and play football is all I care about.

With Sean Jones signing with the Iggles the Browns really need some safety help. Roy Williams was cut by Dallas, he has always been solid against the run but he is somewhat suspect against the pass. He could be an option, not real sure who else is out there.

Somewhat suspect against the pass is a huge compliment to Roy Williams.

Agreed he is pretty terrible against that pass but we do not have much going on at safety right now. I like Rashad Johnson from Alabama, natural playmaker, nose for the ball, decent tackler. He is currently projected as a second or third rounder.

Agree about Johnson. There are a few pretty decent safeties projected between 2-4 that look like they should be pretty solid. Johnson, Louis Delmas, Patrick Chung, William Moore (I think Moore is projected middle/late first round - could be wrong).

Now all we have to do is pick up some more draft choices to get some of these players since it is not looking like we are going to be very active in FA. Safety, 2 LB's, 1 RB, another DB, and maybe an OL since we are pretty long in the tooth there. Pretty soon we might be called the Cleveland Browns Jets:(

Cleveland Browns still talking to New York Jets' free agents
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Monday March 09, 2009, 3:18 PM

CLEVELAND -- While the Browns continue negotiating with one New York Jet free agent, they have begun talking with yet another.

The agent for linebacker David Bowens said he and the Browns are still talking, but there's nothing new to report.

Eric Barton, another Jets linebacker, also has met with the Browns. Barton, 30, led the Jets in tackles last year. He started 46 of 48 games in three years under former Jets coach Eric Mangini.

draftcountdown.com has a new mock draft up today. They have us taking Orakpo at 5, Donald Brown at 36(rb from connecticut) and Jared Cook at 50(TE from south carolina). I don't really care for any of those picks. Orakpo is decent I could live with it but we don't need to draft a TE right now period. We need a corner and a safety plus all the linebackers we can get. I would say we definitely need a big back that can replace Jamal too but I don't know if like Brown at 36.

I don't think the Brown pick is a bad one. I'm no expert though. Haha

Agree with the others. I think Orakpo looks good, but the team has more important needs, especially if they sign these LBs that are being discussed.

EDIT: I was thinking Barton was an OLB. Taking an OLB at 5 wouldn't be a bad move. Still.. secondary is more important IMO..

We need a difference maker at safety and there is going to be some decent options in round two. You need talented guys in the secondary but the browns gotta find some guys that can come off the edge and put pressure on the quarterback.

No the Browns desperately need a pass rush.

They can find a solid safety in FA or later in the draft. They need the difference maker up front and in this draft, that Orakpo....
