One thing's for sure, like I said earlier, regardless of what happens with Mangini, I hope they make an effort to keep Rob Ryan around. I love how he calls defense. Get him some players and look out.

Yea, agree with this. Really like Rob Ryan and what he's been able to do with a shortage of good players.

I guess in doing a little research on Holmgren not many of his disciples would I want to be the HC of the Cleveland Browns. Most of them have been losers as HC's of other teams and there aren't many other people out there who would make a good fit with Holmgren. Maybe keep Mangini for another year out of necessity if he will give up the authority that Holmgren wants.

I like Andy Reid (Not available) and Jon Gruden (Available). Other than these two I would agree. Keep Mangini & hire a new OC schooled in the WCO. Holmgren has enough on his plate to hire GM, ready for FA and the draft and figure out the QB situation.

Here's the dilemma we are going to run into if we end up hiring a new coach. Anyone worth a damn is going to want to have control over personnel and I don't see Shanahan or Gruden or anyone else with that type of experience coming here without that control. That means hiring another coordinator that doesn't have any experience. Holmgren plans on hiring a GM by all accounts so this could be a possibility (Coach/GM) but he of all people should know it doesn't work based on his experience in Seattle.

Every time I have heard Mangini speak, he at least has said on numerous occasions that he wants what is best for the organization, where everyone is working towards the same goal. I have heard it so often that I do not believe that it is simply lip service from him.

Not directed at you here but I heard Holmgren on the radio say that he isn't militant (my word) about the exclusive use of the West Coast offense nor is he militant (again, my word) about a 4-3 defense. He is open to hearing folks out on their philosophies. I guess time will tell.

Now the part you have about keeping Mangini for a year out of necessity, well I really hope the decision isn't made with that mind set.

If Holmgren keeps Mangini it better be because he feels that he is the right coach for the Browns, the right coach that will be on the same page as the rest of the organization, the right coach for several years. I say this mainly because as of right now, the Browns have 11 draft picks. If I were in Holmgren's spot, I would want my coach to be who I really want, not a one year place holder. With that many draft picks, it is imperative for Holmgren to have "his guy", as that can really help in laying a foundation for the organization.

I guess the only reason that I stated the above was because I do not really see anyone out there that I really want unless some of the guys who say they don't want to coach this coming season are blowing smoke.

Having said that, I totally agree with you with regard to the fact that I don't want Holmgren keeping Mangini just because he could not find anyone better. If he does keep him, I certainly hope that he thinks he is the best fit for the Browns.

I know this is written by a hack:) but it is the only thing I could find:(
I have no idea how they could get John Fox out of his contract with Carolina without some form of compensation. If it's just money, that is fine with me but if they get into draft picks I don't know.

Eric Mangini remains Cleveland Browns head coach - for now

BEREA, Ohio -- Eric Mangini is still the coach of the Browns. For how long is still in question.

New Browns President Mike Holmgren emerged from his sit-down meeting with Mangini without making a decision on whether Mangini will be his coach for the 2010 season.

In holding off, Holmgren is following the lead of Miami Dolphins football czar Bill Parcells, who waited a few days for the dust to settle before firing coach Cam Cameron and his staff after a 1-15 season.

It is expected that Holmgren will also use the time to interview members of Mangini's coaching staff to learn as much as he can about their history with the team.

But the future for Mangini in Cleveland doesn't look bright. Reports have intensified that Philadelphia Eagles General Manager Tom Heckert Jr. will interview today to be Holmgren's GM. There is also increasing speculation that Carolina coach John Fox could switch teams and be Holmgren's top choice as Browns coach.

Fox has one year left on his Carolina contract and his future has been open to speculation because the team has declined to give him an extension.

A league source who knows Holmgren well said he expected Holmgren to choose a defensive-minded head coach and would take a hands-on approach to the offensive staff.

Holmgren, Heckert and Fox all are represented by agent Bob LaMonte.

I'd like to have John Fox in Cleveland. I've been on the do-what-it-takes-to-get-Gruden bandwagon, but that's because I had never really considered as a Fox a possibility.

Hackert to meet with Holmgren tonight. There will be a done deal as soon as the Eagles are out of the playoffs. Mangini must be on the same page as the GM per Holmgren in so many words so I think he is history.
