Cleveland Browns (2009 Season)

If I'm the Browns, I package our draft pick with other picks, and/or players, and move up to #1 or #2 and take Suh or McCoy. If that doesn't work out , I trade down and take Taylor Mays or Haden. Team needs CB, S, RT, LB, TE,
and depth almost everywhere.

Also, congrats to Mangini, and the O-line yesterday.

Holmgren it is supposed to have a telephone press conference at 5 PM today. I have no idea if we can catch it in Columbus. Cleveland people let us know what happens if anything significant.

you trade down too far and neither Mays or Haden will be there.

i want no part of taylor mayes. the dude just sucks. mcclain and haden should be the next in line after the big 3 of berry, suh, and gerald mccoy go off the board. those two will be available in the 2nd half of the top 10. if cleveland trades down too far, they can just go offense and take okung, or trent williams, or even dez bryant or cj spiller.

there was a guy above:wink2: me who asked about Mays... not me! I am not sure about Spiller in the NFL. I don't know how much of a pounding he can take. I will have to check out his dimensions. Don't know how much bigger he is then Harrison or James Davis.

This...

That said, agreed - unless you plan on making Mays a linebacker I wouldn't want him in my secondary. He's far too mistake-prone to survive at the next level like that.

Not saying coaching can't help, but he hasn't changed much in his time at USC.

Holmgren said he isn't completely tied to the West Coast offense. He will listen to other ideas and evaluate. Said he was also open to the 3-4 on defense as well.

Contract is a 5 year deal (not 10 years as some have reported). Said he was hiring a GM but made it very clear that he (Holmgren) would have final say on the 53 man roster.

That is pretty much what I caught; didn't hear it all however.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Spiller never had a year round football training program while at Clemson. I believe he ran track. Assuming that I am remembering that correctly, he will probably add 10-15 pounds to his frame and be more than fine in the NFL.

Browns need another RB IMO. Not saying it should be Spiller, but Harrison can't go a whole season with the number of carries he has had the past couple of games.

No way that you trade up. The salary hit at the top of the draft is something almost no team wants anymore. I like where we're gonna be right now.

GO BROWNS BEAT THE JAGS.

Let's see... Mangini said we would vastly improve the running game. Look what has happened. He also indicated we would play with better intelligence. We are near the top in the NFL in fewest penalties. He also indicated we would play hard and with toughness.

On the down side we continue to lead the NFL in Injuries. We are still unsettled at QB. We also need playmakers on both sides of the ball.

Overall I think Mangini has done a good job considering the talent level he inherited from years of abuse. We now have Cap room, 11 draft picks, and some great Roster moves (Roth, Moore, Trusnik, Bernard).

Holmgren should focus on GM and talent aquisition and keep Eric Mangini IMO. Lerner has to get out of the habit of paying former employees.
Excellent reasoning here IMO.

QBs are plentiful in this draft; just hope to get the right one. Quinn and Anderson aren't it, so far as I can see.

Problem: Holmgren has never evidenced a skill for talent evaluation and acquisition, so not sure where that leaves the Browns.

Hopefully he hires a GM that has a talent of evaluation and acquisition.

it leaves him hiring a gm as he said he was going to do today in his media conference.

Thanks. I was able to hear the press conference online. This information highway is certainly something:biggrin2:

Regarding Spiller, you are probably correct that if he devoted all this time to football that he probably would've put on 10-15 pounds. However, I just can't see the Browns taking a RB in the first round because of their other needs and I still maintain that Spiller is very close to Harrison and Davis when it comes to size and stature. We could als o convert Cribbs to RB and that might fulfill a need. Just don't think we need a RB right off the bat.
I thought it was sort of interesting during the press conference he initially said that he would have total responsibility for all personnel decisions including the 53 man roster but then he sort of backtracked that and said that the personnel guru, GM, and coach would also have some input.

One of the things that I really take away from his press conference and maybe it's just me but he certainly feels very confident of himself and I am stating that mildly.:wink2:

I don't know that much (track records) of the guys mentioned in the following article by from one I got out of the press conference I thought Holmgren would be hiring a personnel guy, GM, and a coach. I truly believe that Mangini is gone because he is not a West Coast offense or 4-3 guy. Maybe if he was one of those it would be different.

It would be stunning if Browns kept Mangini

The more I dig around into the situation in Cleveland, the more convinced I am that Eric Mangini?s first season with the Browns will be his last. In fact, at this point, I would be stunned if he came back for 2010. Totally stunned.
Mike Holmgren, the new team president, told the media Monday that he has not made a final decision on Mangini. However, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, Holmgren has done plenty of due diligence since taking the job, and Mangini?s difficulties dealing with players, co-workers, team employees, etc., dating back to his time as coach of the Jets, when coupled with the on-field performance of his teams, make it virtually certain Holmgren will change coaches in the coming weeks.

Holmgren will meet with Mangini next Monday when he comes to Cleveland and then will conduct a press conference with the media. By the following week, look for a wholesale reconstruction of the Browns organization to begin, with sweeping changes being made throughout football operations, coaching, etc. Mangini shares no coaching roots with Holmgren and comes from a tree diametrically different from the West Coast system Holmgren will implement. Unless something changes dramatically, and given the homework already conducted, that?s highly unlikely. It?s more a matter of when than if a new coach arrives.

The next move could be the hiring of a general manager. Randy Mueller, also a candidate in Seattle, is considered by some league sources as a favorite. Former Denver general manager Ted Sundquist could also be in the mix, while up-and-comers such as Green Bay?s John Schneider and Seattle?s Will Lewis are also in the mix.

Also, as I reported first last week, when Jim Zorn and his staff are let go in Washington, look for Zorn and offensive coordinator Sherman Smith to land back with Holmgren after both were long-time members of his staff in Seattle. Zorn would be a strong quarterback coach if nothing else, while Smith played a central role in the Seahawks? ground game when Shaun Alexander was running wild. Should Holmgren go with a defensive head coach, look for Leslie Frazier, Minnesota?s defensive coordinator, to be a top choice.

The last thing the Browns need to do is take a RB in the first round. Time and time again, teams in the NFL have shown that they can find high quality backs in the later rounds. Everyone seems to be forgetting about Davis...I think he and Harrison can make a very effective tandem next year. I have also liked what I have seen out of Jennings.

It sounds like a broken record, but we need to get stronger up the middle, especially on defense. Safety, interior linemen and inside LB are all positions of need.

On a side note, one thing you have to like about Mangini, is what he has been able to do with some of the guys off of the practice squad. Evan Moore, Jennings and Benard have all been big contributors over the last couple of weeks along with the the acquisition of Matt Roth. These guys are all making serious contributions.

Have to wonder why Coye Frances is not playing, especially with how bad Hank Poteat stinks up the joint. Hard for me to believe he cant beat out Poteat for playing time at this point unless he just can't figure out the defense.
