Cleveland Browns (2008 Season)

CPD

For forlorn Browns fans, all that's left is a slow, sad march to the finish

by Terry Pluto/Plain Dealer Columnist Monday December 15, 2008, 11:54 PM

PHILADELPHIA -- It's just sad.
That's how I feel for Browns fans, who at least didn't have to pay to watch their team lose, 30-10, at Philadelphia Monday night.
This has become another of those seasons when the real story is who will be the coach next year. Who will they take in the draft? Who should be the quarterback? It's the kind of discussion that fans of losing teams have, fans like many of you.
Only this season, it hurts even worse because the Browns were supposed to be somebody. Five prime time games. Playoff contenders. A breakthrough year. Instead, it's just more broken dreams, mashed knees and calls for Joshua Cribbs to play quarterback.
Most of us know about all the injuries to key players such as Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson and Kellen Winslow. We know about all the mistakes by the coaches and front office. We know what went wrong.
But down deep, fans have to be wondering, "How did it get this bad?"

Final: Eagles 30, Browns 10

by Dennis Manoloff Monday December 15, 2008, 11:30 PM

What happened: David Akers kicks 34-yard field goal at 14:52 for 23-3 lead. .. Donovan McNabb throws 10-yard TD pass to Greg Lewis at 11:14 for 30-3 lead. ... Brandon McDonald returns interception 24 yards for touchdown at 9:11, pulling Browns within 30-10.
Browns nuggets: On first play from scrimmage in quarter, McDonald dives to knock down third-down pass deep in Cleveland territory. ... Former Eagle Donte Stallworth catches third-down pass and hears boos. ... Why did Ken Dorsey make the trip? ... "Contest'' officially a joke by early fourth. ... Browns seem to forget that Eagles tied Cincinnati. ... Dorsey throws awful third-down pass at 10:18. ... Browns' first TD in forever comes after Willie McGinest hits Kevin Kolb, sending pass wobbling into air for McDonald to snatch it. McDonald adds style points with leaping somersault into end zone. Judges' combined score: 9.9. ... McGinest, admittedly having lost a step or two, plays hard week after week. ... Dave Zastudil out-kicks coverage with 60-yard punt; nobody is there to kill it inside the 5 and it bounces into end zone. ... Three MNF games this season, three 100-yard games for Braylon Edwards. ... Another 10-loss season in the books.

Browns Insider: Injury knocks out Heiden; Rogers plays through the pain

by Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer Reporter Monday December 15, 2008, 11:20 PM

large_rogershurtjg.jpg
Joshua Gunter/The Plain DealerShaun Rogers writhes in pain on the Browns sideline after aggravating a shoulder injury in the second quarter Monday night. Rogers sat out briefly, but played the remainder of the loss to the Eagles.
PHILADELPHIA -- The injuries continue to mount for the Browns, along with the losses. The latest was to tight end Steve Heiden, who was carted off the field after the second play of the second half with injuries to his right knee and right ankle. He did not return.
The injuries were suffered when Eagles defensive tackle Broderick Bunkley rolled up on Heiden's leg from behind. Heiden stood up, but was unable to put any weight on the leg and had to be helped onto the cart.
The extent of the injury was unknown and Heiden will most likely undergo an MRI today. The injury was especially costly because tight end Kellen Winslow is sidelined with a high ankle sprain and could miss the final two games.
The injury left the Browns with two healthy tight ends in Darnell Dinkins and rookie Martin Rucker.
Dinkins began the game by dropping a pass over the middle near the Eagles 5 in the first quarter.

Rogers battles stinger: From the way nose tackle Shaun Rogers played, one would never have known he suffered a stinger in his left shoulder early in the second quarter.
Rogers, who could make his third Pro Bowl Tuesday, suffered the injury when linebacker Andra Davis rolled into his shoulder. Rogers returned later in the quarter, putting pressure on Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb and deflecting passes.

Browns beaten down, left to play out the season

BEREA, Ohio ? The Browns have nothing left to play for in a season perhaps even more disappointing than any of the seven double-digit loss seasons over the past 10 years.
For all the Browns' expectations and talent, the only thing left is to speculate on their next coach and top draft choice.
Browns fans are already wishing for former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher and Ohio State tailback Beanie Wells, who has yet to decide whether he will leave the Buckeyes early for the NFL.
But coach Romeo Crennel and the Browns have another two games to muddle through after losing 30-10 to the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.
It was the Browns' 10th loss just one season after they won 10 games with an explosive offense that earned them five prime-time contests.
That same offense is down to its third-string quarterback and has failed to score a touchdown in a month.
"This season has not gone the way that I wanted it to go ... but it is what it is," a downcast Crennel said Tuesday. "It's disappointing; it's frustrating."
The toll of the Browns' fourth straight loss showed after the game Monday night. Wide receiver Braylon Edwards ? plagued by dropped passes all season ? had a solid game with five receptions for 102 yards, yet expressed his displeasure with Cleveland fans and media.

Between the Lines: Hoard's popularity with Browns fans fractures Edwards' complaints

by Bill Livingston/Plain Dealer Columnist Tuesday December 16, 2008, 6:47 PM

Bud Shaw ably skewered Braylon Edwards for his a-maize-ing belief that going to Michigan is why he's booed, and not because he's had more drops than the Smith Brothers used to cure coughs.
My favorite example of a Michigan guy who, like Edwards, got off on the wrong foot, then was loved by the fans here was Leroy "He Scored" Hoard. No less than Bo Schembechler ripped Hoard's work ethic to The Plain Dealer's Tony Grossi after the Browns drafted him in the second round in 1990.
Soon thereafter, it developed, in a story I broke, that Hoard tended to fall asleep in team meetings. "He Snored" admitted it. "But only once or twice," he said.
In his second season, as a reader rebuking my carelessness with stats pointed out, he scored 11 touchdowns. Then, in 1994, Hoard was responsible for 1,335 yards rushing and receiving, nearly double his next-best one-season total. He scored nine touchdowns that season.

Not all bad: Browns' Thomas, Rogers claim Pro Bowl nods; Cribbs and Dawson are alternates

by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter Tuesday December 16, 2008, 7:18 PM

John Kuntz/The Plain DealerAlthough there might have been more difficult afternoons (and evenings) for Joe Thomas than in 2007, the Browns' offensive tackle earned the respect of players, coaches and fans to be named a starter on the AFC Pro Bowl team.
We depart from the dismal happenings of a 4-10 Browns season to reflect on some positive news. Left tackle Joe Thomas and nose tackle Shaun Rogers were selected to the AFC Pro Bowl team and Josh Cribbs was named a first alternate at return specialist and special teams.
Also, coach Romeo Crennel was not hit by a shoe thrown by the media.
For Thomas, it's two Pro Bowls in two seasons, a good start on his frequently expressed goal of some day winning election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He made the team as an alternate as a rookie and was moved up to the roster to play for injured Jason Peters of Buffalo. This year Thomas joined Peters as a starter.
"I'm very proud," Thomas said, "but I'd give this up any day to be on a team that's winning 10 games and making the playoffs like we almost did last year."
As the Browns' once high-powered offense collapsed under the weight of injuries, dropped passes and missed assignments, it appeared to have dragged down Thomas with it. He gave up a sack to Philadelphia's Trent Cole in the 30-10 drubbing by the Eagles Monday night.
But Thomas maintained his game has improved over his rookie season.

This team is fucking cursed. There is no other way to explain it.

Look at what Cleveland fans have put up with over the course of the last 25 years. Forget about the fucking Clowns for a minute and look at the Tribe and the Cavs. My God. If Cleveland teams aren't busy sucking, they are busy ripping the hearts out of their fans chests.

As far as fucking Braylon Edwards goes. Nobody gives a shit if you went to UM you fucking pussy. Grow a pair and catch the ball and you'll hear the cheers. See ya!! Pro Bowl WR my ass. The Browns knew what they were getting when they drafted him. He dropped the ball in college and he drops the ball now. There were question marks about his attitude in college and they are on full display now. Actually, looking back on that 2005 draft I don't know if I've ever seen a weaker first round. I guess they could have drafted Demarcus Ware or Shawn Merriman.

Meanwhile, the Patriots draft Logan who-the-fuck-is-this-guy Mankins (OL) and he ends up in the Pro Bowl.

The Browns were fake good last year and that 10-6 record only delayed the inevitable as far as Romeo and Savage go.

I can't believe I ever entertained the thought that these fucking bums would be a good team this year. The Steelers. Now there's a team. They have an identity and they do what it takes to maintain that identity. Tough, hard nosed, solid football. Great defense and solid offense. I fucking hate the Steelers, but man I envy them.

It has become so bad with the Browns that even a team player like Cribbs is starting to speak out that he was told all last week that he was going to touch the ball quite a bit against the Eagles and we all saw what happened.

The entire organization needs to be dismantled and we might as well start over like 1999 with a new coach and a new GM. Keep some of the good players who can keep their mouths shut down like to play in Cleveland and get rid of the rest of the scum. This is truly f*c#i@ng embarrassing.

BEREA ? Romeo Crennel said it in a team meeting as Monday night melted into Tuesday?s wee hours.

Then, the Browns head coach said it to the media Tuesday in the wake of a 30-10 loss at Philadelphia.

?I don?t think we have enough ammunition to match up with them.?

One key piece of ammo, Joshua Cribbs, took offense.
?I thought I was going to get the ball a lot,? Cribbs said.

Crennel had said Cribbs might get several plays called his way in each quarter, presumably as a quarterback. Cribbs wound up getting five touches the entire game.

?I thought they were going to call the Flash package a lot more,? Cribbs said. ?We have a lot more ammunition. We have a lot more firepower than we show. I don?t know what we?re waiting for.?

ONLY SIX TOUCHES

Cribbs touched the ball six times. He ran five times out of shotgun formation, losing 2 yards on one play but gaining 27 on the other four. He threw one incomplete pass.

BEREA ? Trying to psychoanalyze the Browns is like trying to bite your own teeth. Seriously, walk into the locker room and you?ll walk out not knowing whether these guys need an arm wrapped around their shoulders or fingers around their neck.

That?s why Romeo Crennel has lost his team, and his job won?t be far behind.

Cleveland lost what is becoming known as the Cleveland way Monday in Philadelphia, 30-10. Afterward, wide receiver Braylon Edwards popped off about welcoming a trade.

Quarterback Ken Dorsey talked about all the weapons the Browns offense has. What? Dorsey looks like Tobey Maguire, but he doesn?t have Spidey Sense, maybe not even common sense. Weapons of self-destruction, perhaps.

After the loss, the mood and tone of Cleveland?s locker room changed. The players are dysfunctional. Even Joshua Cribbs ? the ultimate team guy ? is questioning why he doesn?t have more of a role in the offense.
But it should have been expected that Cribbs, too, would turn on the coaching staff. All he?s doing is following the veteran leadership, or lack thereof, on the team.

Crennel has lost control of his players. As such, the Browns have lost their fans.
