Cleveland Browns (2008 Season)

I think that one of the big problems with the Browns when you compare them two teams like the Steelers is the lack of a good Cleveland Browns organization. It seems like Savage runs almost everything including the public-relations department. Lerner really needs to find someone with some administrative football knowledge along with public-relations skills and make that person the president of the Browns and then get going on some type of organizational structure. It makes me wonder now who really won the power struggle between John Collins and Savage and who was the cause of it.

On another note, I have some concerns about Marty since he has two sons who are both assistants with other teams. I wonder if he would want to bring both of his sons along as coordinators. I do not think that would be a good idea.

CPD News: Body Found
Tuesday November 18, 2008

Cleveland , Ohio

Cleveland Police have recovered the body of an adult male from the Cuyahoga River at 8:45 AM.

The victim apparently fell in and drowned due to excessive alcohol consumption. He was wearing a Cleveland Browns jersey, black fishnet stockings and a red garter belt. He also had a cucumber inserted in his rectum.

The police thoughtfully removed the Browns jersey to spare the family any unnecessary embarrassment.

Funny, they found a guy just like this floating in the Ohio River just last Sunday only he was wearing a Bengals jersey.

Maybe Strickland should apply for disaster relief funds.

Former Titans official in mix
Ex-GM Floyd Reese would welcome call from Browns owner
By Marla Ridenour

While recent reports have characterized the return to the Browns of Bill Cowher and Marty Schottenheimer as unlikely, former Tennessee Titans General Manager Floyd Reese would openly welcome a call from Browns owner Randy Lerner.

In a telephone interview Wednesday, Reese said ''you'd have to'' consider the Browns if Lerner decides to fire General Manager Phil Savage or insist that Savage accept a reduced role. Presumably, coach Romeo Crennel would be the first to go.

Currently an NFL analyst for ESPN, Reese has been out of the league since stepping down from his Titans post in January 2007. Reese has more than 30 years of NFL experience, including 13 as the Titans' GM.

''When I look at organizations and potential jobs, you always look at do they have what it takes to win. That's an owner willing to invest, the facility, the stadium, the fan base,'' Reese said. ''Cleveland's got all of that.

Continued

If we could get Reese to run our personnel department, that would be an excellent hire. When he was still with the Titans, he drafted many of the players that make up the team today. His name was also thrown around when Savage was first hired. He is very highly thought of in the NFL.

I heard that the Vermont Teddy Bear company has released a special bear collection.

It is called, "The Decade of Excrement Collection" and it is a trio of bears with likeness to Chris Palmer, Butch Davis, and Romeo Crennel.

Browns promote RB Patrick

By Carlos "Big C" Holmes | Thursday, December 11, 2008, 11:01 AM
The Cleveland Browns have signed running back Allen Patrick from the practice squad to the active roster, the club announced today. The team also signed TE Jed Collins to the practice squad.
Patrick (6-1, 200) has spent the last 13 weeks on the Browns practice squad. Patrick signed with Baltimore as an undrafted rookie free agent this past spring and was waived by the Ravens at the end of training camp.

Winslow wants to be back with Browns

By Tom Withers
Associated Press

Thursday, December 11, 2008

BEREA ? Kellen Winslow was reluctant to talk, what with his tongue being a past problem.
But the talented tight end, whose badly sprained left ankle will likely keep him off the field the remainder of Cleveland's schedule, decided to sit down at his locker stall on Wednesday and address his disappointing season with the Browns.
He hopes it's not his last one.
Despite the Browns' shocking slide and the uncertainty leading into an upcoming offseason of probable change, Winslow wants to stay in Cleveland.
"I love being a Cleveland Brown," he said. "The guys here, we don't know who's going to be here next year. You just have to focus on this year. That's all you can do. ... I do want to be back here. I love being here. I love playing here. The fans have stuck by me."
Although Winslow's ankle remains swollen ? he hurt it in a Nov. 30 game against Indianapolis ? and he has a sprained right shoulder, the oft-injured 25-year-old is winding down this season in better shape than he has in some time. Winslow doesn't anticipate needing any surgeries, a welcome change after having multiple procedures on his right knee in recent years.

Winslow's future up in air Tight end's days with Browns could be numbered
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Friday, Dec 12, 2008
BEREA: In the second week of a three- to six-week injury, tight end Kellen Winslow might have played his last game for the Browns this season.
The bigger question is whether his days in Cleveland are done.
''I do want to be back here. I love being here. I love playing here,'' Winslow said Thursday. ''The fans have stuck by me.''
Whether that feeling is genuine or merely an attempt to avoid controversy, Winslow's future might be determined by what owner Randy Lerner decides to do with General Manager Phil Savage. The Browns are 4-9 going into the game Monday night against the Eagles in Philadelphia, and the status of Savage and coach Romeo Crennel will be decided after the season.
The sixth overall pick in 2004, Winslow had a public falling out with Savage over the second staph infection of his career, which prompted Winslow's comment that Savage treated him ''like a piece of meat'' by failing to visit him in the hospital. That remark drew a one-game suspension for the Oct. 26 game at Jacksonville that was later rescinded to a $25,000 fine and sent the Browns into a week of turmoil.

Crennel won't play Rucker Winning first priority for coach, not giving rookies playing time
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Friday, Dec 12, 2008
BEREA: Browns coach Romeo Crennel is turning a deaf ear to those clamoring for playing time for the Browns' rookies, especially tight end Martin Rucker.
Playing in just two games this season and catching one pass for 9 yards, Rucker was expected to get his chance after Kellen Winslow suffered a high ankle sprain against Indianapolis Nov. 30. While he was active last week at Tennessee, Rucker was used only on special teams.
In a draft-day trade with Dallas, the Browns gave up their third-round draft choice in 2009 to obtain the fourth-round pick to select Rucker. At that time, he was thought to be an insurance policy in case Winslow held out of training camp after asking for a new contract in February.
''Rucker has a lot of potential,'' Winslow said Thursday. ''He's got a long way to go, just knowledge of the game, speed of the game, knowing when to run his routes off what coverage, that sort of thing. But he's going to get there. I think he's going to be a good player.''
Rucker set the school record at Missouri with 203 career receptions and totaled 2,175 yards and 18 touchdowns. His 84 catches in 2007 broke the season record for tight ends. He shattered most of the school marks set by Winslow's father, Kellen Sr.

Analysis: Browns' 2008 draft (and trades) didn't live up to expectations

by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter Thursday December 11, 2008, 6:49 PM

medium_cwilliamsmh.jpg

Mark Humphrey/Associated PressAs was the case on this chase of Titans' QB Kerry Collins last Sunday, defensive lineman Corey Williams has been more of a miss than a hit in his first season with the Browns. Williams has struggled with shoulder issues since the exhibition season.

The adage about not judging an NFL draft for three years is outdated. It is kept alive only in personnel circles to buy time with demanding owners. The fact is the best teams of a given season nowadays routinely receive significant contributions from their rookies.
Where would the Tennessee Titans be without running back Chris Johnson? The Atlanta Falcons without quarterback Matt Ryan? The Denver Broncos without offensive tackle Ryan Clady and receiver Eddie Royal? The Baltimore Ravens without quarterback Joe Flacco and running back Ray Rice?
(One team bucking this trend is the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are still competing at the elite level despite no production from their top three picks -- running back Rashard Mendenhall, receiver Limas Sweed and linebacker Bruce Davis.)
Other examples abound. The New York Giants last year used six of their eight draft picks in key roles on the way to the Super Bowl championship. The year before, the Indianapolis Colts relied on instant impact from rookie running back Joseph Addai and got a surprise 14 starts out of safety Antoine Bethea, a sixth-round pick, and won the Super Bowl.

Browns Insider: Winslow says he's eager to return to Browns in 2009

by Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer Reporter Thursday December 11, 2008, 7:08 PM

medium_hurtkwas.jpg
Amy Sancetta/Associated PressHelped off the field after injuring his ankle against Indianapolis, Kellen Winslow said on Thursday that despite a lost season, he would prefer to stay with the Browns for next season.

Kellen Winslow hopes to return to the Browns next season, despite his midseason feud with the team and his contract issues. "I do want to be back here," Winslow said. "I love being here and playing here. The fans have stuck by me, so yeah."
Winslow, who will sit out the Eagles game Monday night with his high ankle sprain, said none of the players are sure of their futures because of coach Romeo Crennel and General Manager Phil Savage being on the hot seat.
"Whatever happens, happens," he said. "I love being a Cleveland Brown. The guys here, we don't know who's going to be here next year. It's tough. You just have to focus on this year."
He said he didn't know if his status would be affected by that of Savage. Winslow's beef during the staph infection saga was mostly directed toward the general manager. "I'm not going to say," said Winslow.
He made it clear, however, that he has a very good relationship with Browns owner Randy Lerner. "I'm very happy with him," he said.

As for the new contract, he said, "I hired Drew Rosenhaus for that. That's his job." Then he added with a laugh, "I might just want to go and reach free agency [laughs]. Who knows?"

I don't understand why people have such a problem with Winslow. He used to be a complete d-bag. But in the last three seasons he has played hard, yeah he runs his mouth a bit but at least he cares. And unlike Braylon he catches the ball most of the time.

Catching it is great, but when you give up at least 15 yards a game to an Offensive PI because he has to push off to get any separation anymore, that's not so great.....
