Cleveland Browns (2008 Season)

How do you Browns fans feel about Shawn Crable as a 3-4 OLB opposite Wimbley? I know he's a Michigan alum and all meaning he'll get booed before his first home game, but he can get to the passer and make plays in the backfield. Obviously you don't have a first round pick, but what about 2/3?

He won't be available. The Bengals will take him 9th overall. :slappy:

Don't have those either.

We don't have a 2 or 3 either...otherwise...meh, if he's good enough then I'll root for him as a Brown.

I'd give him a chance, though he's left a lot to be desired as a linebacker defending the run. But if they want to pick him up in the 5th or 6th round and give him a chance to prove himself, I wouldn't be opposed to that.

The thing to keep in mind, is there are many more DE/DL available in FA right now. The only 2 unrestricted FA's out there are Brian Kelly and Ty Law who could immediately help us. I think we'll make a move via trade to solidify the starting group.

Brandon MacDonald looked pretty good in his time, and Eric Wright was also decent. But I certainly don't think they're comfortable throwing 2 second year guys out there, especially when Brandon had limited time. It'd be a huge gamble. Again, on paper we have to be bottom 6 in the league at starting cb's. From listening to ESPN radio just this morning, several commentators commented on how much help we gave the front 7, but have not addressed the secondary. Not that means a whole lot.

I still think Phil will address it before the season.
We need a pass rushing OLB. Unless you want to count on Willie the entire season. Please review the Cleveland roster. We are done signing free-agent defensive linemen. Savage will get some backup DBs. The ones you're talking about that are on the market are too expensive. Can you say salary cap:biggrin:

Crable won't be there but I have seen some projections that
John L-Saint-Dick  from Michigan St. may still be there in the 6th or 7th round. Anyone who watched that guy knows 2 things about him....he makes a ton of plays and all he does is rush the passer. He might make a decent rush olb if we haven't addressed it.

Big moves, big men bolster D-line

Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
03.01.2008

Two big moves, two very big men.
Saturday morning, Romeo Crennel introduced Corey Williams and confirmed that the Browns have agreed to terms with the Lions on a trade that would bring Shaun Rogers to the Browns as well.
Even if you figured the Browns were going to be aggressive in bolstering their defensive front, you probably weren't figuring they'd be this aggressive. The Browns added two proven, quality defensive linemen on the first day of the NFL's player movement period.

Browns embrace early draft

Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer
03.01.2008

Some might look at it as if the Browns won't have much of a draft this year.
General Manager Phil Savage and head coach Romeo Crennel see it differently.
"Brady Quinn, Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers -- one, two, three -- I would take that draft every year," Savage said addressing the media Saturday.
Quarterback Quinn was selected 22nd overall at the 2007 draft after the Browns traded their '08 first-round pick for the right to select him.

Quinn: Focused on improving

Steve King, Staff Writer
03.01.2008

He is going to continue to work hard and improve.
He'll continue to compete.
And he'll most definitely be readyto do whatever he can to help the Browns become a winner.
That was the gist of what Browns quarterback Brady Quinn said early Saturday afternoon before he began a two-hour stint posing for photos with hordes of fans as part of a promotion at the annual Cleveland Auto Show at the I-X Center. It was his first public apperance since the club agreed to terms with Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Anderson.

By DE I basically meant a pass rushing OLB/DE mold. That is what LaBoy would provide. It makes sense they'd bring more OLB/DE's in when there are many more on the market.

I just don't see why you'd make all of these moves to instantly make our team a contender, and then go into the season with such a glaring weakness in pass coverage. I'm not trying to knock the guys we have, but Wright and MacDonald, supplemented by Sean Jones and Brodney Pool cannot make Phil feel easy. I will be shocked if we do not add a starting CB in the next few weeks.

Has anyone seen what we have left under the cap? I haven't heard or read about what's left under the cap. That will obviosuly make a major difference regarding what kind of move Phil can make.

Making Quinn hold the Browns' clipboard silly

By Hal McCoy
Staff Writer

Tuesday, March 04, 2008
A UPS truck asked me the other day, as it blocked my vision, "What can Brown do for you?"
It got me thinking about what the Browns could have done for you Cleveland Browns fans.

All I want from UPS is to deliver my packages on time and in one piece, which it didn't do with a large box I shipped to spring training in Sarasota, Fla. It got there on time but it was crumpled, and a slit down the side permitted the underwear to view the outside world.
All fans want from the Browns is a playoff appearance, some kind of championship, just one.
Things seemed on the upswing when they drafted quarterback Brady Quinn. And it was OK that they permitted him to be Clipboard Kid last season, learning the pro craft while Derek Anderson was plugged in for the interim.
Then the Browns performed a head-scratcher, signing Anderson to a three-year, $24 million contract.
Anderson was good, sometimes very good.

Cleveland Browns to meet with free-agent linebacker Darryl Blackstock

Tuesday, March 04, 2008 Mary Kay Cabot

Plain Dealer Reporter
Linebacker Darryl Blackstock, a three-year veteran of the Arizona Cardinals who was not tendered by the team, will visit the Browns today and work out Wednesday, a source said.
Blackstock (6-3, 244) is a rush linebacker with experience in the 3-4 defense, thereby familiar with Romeo Crennel's defense and philosophy.
Blackstock, a third-round pick in 2005 out of Virginia, played there under former Browns defensive assistant Al Groh, who coached with Crennel under Bill Parcells.
@StoryAd
Blackstock has been primarily a backup and special-teams player in Arizona, but some scouts think he can develop into an every-down player in the right system. Last season, he had 21 tackles, one forced fumble and three sacks. Miami and Cincinnati are also believed to be interested.
Scouts Inc.'s analysis on ESPN.com said Blackstock "looks more effective going forward than he does dropping into coverage. He can be explosive with his first step and accelerates off the edge with a good burst of speed. He is active and not afraid to throw his body around with abandon."
