Tucker likes new pieces

Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
03.03.2008

As a first-year NFL defensive coordinator, Mel Tucker doesn't have another day to compare with last Friday.
But another day -- Christmas -- certainly comes to mind.
Tucker's gifts came in the rather large form of two talented defensive linemen acquired via trade, Corey Williams from the Packers and Shaun Rogers from the Lions. Both should figure prominently in Tucker's plans to fix the Browns' run defense and upgrade the defense as a whole.
"I've said before that coaches, we just coach," Tucker said. "Phil (Savage) and his staff, they do an outstanding job evaluating players and doing everything they can to get us players we need to be successful.

Brown getting high marks

Steve King, Staff Writer
03.03.2008

Someday soon, the Browns want to stand alone atop the NFL.
But in one respect at least, that might have already happened.
The Browns have been arguably the biggest player in the league in free agency since it began at 12:01 a.m. Friday.
It started about four and a half hours later when they were able to come to an agreement with restricted free agent quarterback Derek Anderson for him to remain with the Browns. He eventually signed a three-year deal.
It continued with the Browns trading away their second-round pick in this year's NFL Draft to the Green Bay Packers for defensive lineman Corey Williams.

Looks like the Browns will be signing another DE/DT in William Joseph. Good addition IMO. Sound slike they'll ge thim on the cheap, and he's a former first round pick. Been plagued by injuries throughout his career, including a gun-shot wound. He was fantastic at the U.

The Cleveland Browns are showing interest in free agent defensive tackle William Joseph, who will visit with the team on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-5, 308-pound Joseph was the Giants' first-round draft pick in 2003 and has undeniable talent. But he's been plagued by injuries throughout his career, and he missed all of 2007 with a back injury.
For the Browns, signing Joseph would be another move to bolster their defensive line, and a much less costly move than the trades for defensive tackles Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers. Although Joseph has mostly been a tackle during his NFL career, he's a versatile enough athlete that he could be a good fit as a 3-4 end in the Browns' scheme.

Maybe Da Solja will be able to keep him on the field?

Browns' Rogers not looking back Defensive lineman hopes to leave past, losing behind
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Wednesday, Mar 05, 2008
BEREA: To Shaun Rogers, Detroit might as well be Las Vegas.
The massive defensive tackle acquired Friday in a trade with the Lions comes to Cleveland looking for a fresh start. He wants to forget his well-documented problems of the past seven years ? the battle with his weight, inconsistent play, a refusal to talk to the media and the allegation that he groped a woman in a strip club last June, entering her dressing room with a gun in his belt.
''Whatever happened in the past stays in the past,'' said Rogers, sounding like he'd just left Vegas. ''I'm excited to be here and get a new look, develop a new reputation and just move on.''

BROWNS
Cleveland Browns' Shaun Rogers the team's new middle man

Wednesday, March 05, 2008Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
In Detroit, Shaun Rogers was seen as a player with multiple issues.
The Lions were disenchanted with his attitude, health, work ethic and weight. They didn't want to pay the $17.5 million due on the last three years of Rogers' contract.
But Rogers pledged on Tuesday to make the Browns look good for trading for him.
@StoryAd
"Whatever happens in the past stays in the past," Rogers said. "I'm just excited to get a new look, de velop a new reputation and just move on."
The Browns gave up their third-round pick and starting cornerback Leigh Bodden for Rogers on Friday. The trade became official when Rogers passed his Cleveland physical on Tuesday.
Weight has always been an issue with Rogers, he said, since he tipped the scales at 10 pounds, 1 ounce as a baby. The Lions tried assigning Rogers a prescribed weight and also tried removing that standard to encourage him to stay in shape voluntarily.
Listed as 6-4 and 340 pounds, Rogers sometimes played closer to 400 pounds, insiders said. He joked Tuesday he plays at "whatever is comfortable" to him.

Plain Dealer columnist Terry Pluto scribbles in his Cleveland Browns notebook

SCRIBBLES IN MY BROWNS NOTEBOOK
Crennel key to Rogers unlocking success
Shaun Rogers sit next to Romeo Crennel, you would have sworn they were in the same family - as if Rogers were Crennel's favorite nephew. Two big men, smiling, talking about a bright future. If Rogers buys into the Browns coach, then maybe the two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman will have more in his future. Rogers will be in his eighth season, but he's only turning 29 next week because he played only three years at Texas. Rogers mentioned how Crennel "understands the big man." That could be important in the two men developing a relationship.
@StoryAd
No one is saying it publicly,
but the Browns were pleased with Rogers' weight - which is supposed to be somewhere between 350 and 360. He ended the season at 370, according to sources in Detroit. In seven years with Detroit, Rogers had four coaches and was on teams with a 31-81 record. The Browns believe a more stable situation with a steady Crennel will help change his attitude.
Rogers is at a critical point
in his career. The man should not want to be known as "Big Baby" anymore. There should be no more escapades in strip clubs or other embarrassing incidents. As Brian VanOchten wrote in the Grand Rapids Press: "He'd report to camp so out-of-shape and overweight he couldn't practice, and then he'd be gassed in the second half of the season and worthless in the stretch run for the playoffs."

Browns' new defender doesn't want to deal with weighty issue
Wednesday, March 5, 2008
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BEREA Bulky defensive lineman Shaun Rogers didn't want to talk about his weight after he passed a physical and officially became a Cleveland Brown on Tuesday.

If he gets to the quarterback, it won't matter.

The Browns got Rogers in a trade with Detroit late Friday, one of several moves to overhaul their defensive line in the offseason. Rogers will be used at nose tackle and end in Cleveland's 3-4 alignment, teaming with newcomer Corey Williams.

Williams was acquired Friday from Green Bay for a second-round pick. The Browns sent cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round pick to Detroit for Rogers, who had come under criticism for his consistency and his weight.

The 6-foot-4 lineman is listed at 340 pounds. He declined to say what he currently weighs.

"I was born 10 pounds and 1 ounce," Rogers said. "So it's always been an issue. But I've managed to play good football throughout my life. The past is the past. I want to develop a new reputation and just move on."

Rogers was upbeat about coming to Cleveland, where he thinks he has a better chance of making the playoffs. The Bengals were working on a trade for Rogers and had a tentative agreement that fell throughFriday, leaving an opening for the Browns to swing the deal.

"It gives me a new lease on life," Rogers said. "Hopefully I can be a big part of the plan and go out there and try to be dominant and help bring a championship to the Browns."

Big lineman happy to be in Cleveland

Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer
03.04.2008

At 6-feet-4 and 340 pounds, new Browns defensive lineman Shaun Rogers has always answered questions about his weight.
Will he be able to keep it in line with what it needs to be for him to play his best?
He was asked that same question Tuesday when meeting with the Cleveland media for the first time.
"I was born 10 pounds and 1 ounce so it's always been an issue," he joked.

Browns sign Sorensen

Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer
03.04.2008

He might not be Derek Anderson or Jamal Lewis, but he's a key part of the Browns' special teams units -- and he, like Anderson and Lewis, is now locked up through the 2010 season.
Safety Nick Sorensen, who appeared in nine games for the Browns in 2007 after signing with the club on Oct. 24, signed a three-year contract with the team, the club announced Tuesday.
Sorensen finished fifth on the team last season with 14 special teams tackles.

Feeling good about the Brownies for the first time in a LONG time!

Did anyone notice how much better the Defense got last year once we finally replaced Ted Washington?
And how many 320+ lb DEs does any team need? Too many big fat guys last year and not nearly enough speed.
Anyway, big upgrades on the D-line (as long as Rogers shows up to play all 16 games).
Hope Roye gets re-signed for one more year.

I'm not cocerned about the DBs as many on here seem to be.
MacDonlad is a future Pro-Bowler. Mark it down.
We have some young playmakers in the secondary who should now have many more opportunities to make plays due to more third and longs and more pressure on the QB.

LB is still a HUGE concern for me for this defense.
We need another good ILB and another good OLB just to be decent.

Stallworth is the kind of player we were sorely missing last season. Quick, and good at the intermediate routes, with the ability to turn short gains into big ones. If everyone gets healthy, DA will have no excuses if he's not successful.

Hope Jerome Harrison gets more touches this year. he's a great change of pace and 3rd down back.

Totally agree with you regarding the linebacker position. We also need to get some backup DBs because the only two backups on the roster currently are Devin Holly and Kenny Wright and that spells trouble.

Shaun Smith was on SportsTimeOhio yesterday and insinuated a couple times that he was pretty confident Orpheus would come back for another season or two.

Good point about Stallworth. Some people may think that the Browns paid too much for him. However, he fills a role that you just described. He brings things to the WR corps that Jurevicius and Carter just can't do. The market was in Stallworth's favor. You have teams out there like the Bears who just lost or got rid of any decent WRs they had, who would look to Stallworth to be their #1 guy. The Browns are not bringing him in to be that, but in that kind of market, you end up paying a little bit more to get him to come in and be an important role player.

Stallworth is roundly criticized for his production, and is considered a draft bust. Now, I don't think he's a No. 1 guy like you should expect of somebody who was drafted where he was, but he's not a black hole. He was never gonna have an opportunity to produce on that Saints team that drafted him. They sucked. He showed up in Philly, where he was miscast as a No. 1 WR and a replacement for Terrell Owens. Finally, he goes to New England last year, where he was at least cast in the proper role, but stuck behind Wes Welker. I think Stallworth can be a sort of poor man's Wes Welker, and that's something that can be useful for the Browns. If that's what happens, his signing becomes a good value.

I don't quite understand the concern over Stallworth, he can make plays, and fills a void as a true number two to compliment Kdub and Braylon. Joe has stated he plans to retire after this season too.

On top of that Donte's contract over the first four years pays him about 20 million. So in reality it is a much more reasonable contract than what it appears.
