Cleveland Browns (2008 Season)

Dispatch

Quinn will be back as starter next year

Thursday, November 27, 2008 3:02 AM
By Tony Grossi

The Plain Dealer
It gets stranger, this Browns season, by the day.

Now that Brady Quinn is out for the season and likely headed for finger surgery in the next seven days, coach Romeo Crennel said he has seen enough to name him the starting quarterback for 2009.
"I'm impressed with what the kid has done on the field, off the field, the way he handles himself in situations, the way he's run the team, not getting rattled, keeping his composure, being able to manage the game," Crennel said yesterday. "I like all of that about him. I like the kid a lot."

Quinn said hand specialists presented him with three options after examinations of X-rays taken following the original injury to the tip of the finger against Buffalo on Nov. 17. He could play with pain, shut down his season and immobilize the finger in a splint for six weeks, or have surgery.
He chose to play.
"It was something that I was willing to risk," Quinn said. "If I had a chance to do it over, I would do it again."

It was his decision to play..........

If any doubt existed about coach Romeo Crennel's future with the Browns, it probably should be erased after hearing Phil Savage's radio show Wednesday morning.
Savage, the Browns' general manager, left a person scratching his head when he spoke about Crennel during his weekly appearance on WTAM.
''I've said it on this program a number of times,'' Savage said. ''Hey, my responsibility is the 53-man roster, and then it's Romeo and the rest of the coaching staff's decision how to utilize the 45 players that are dressed on Sunday. Who starts. Who plays. When they're gonna play. How they're gonna be utilized.
''If I'm going to get involved in those decisions, then I may as well put a headset on and double my salary.''

The Bill Cowher-Browns rumors might be more wishful thinking on Cleveland's part than anything; other cities also have been sounding the Cowher alarm. While Cowher's name is being linked to the Browns more than any other team, in part because of a profootballtalk.com report that the team has talked to him about the job, his name also has appeared in stories about the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions and even the Notre Dame and Tennessee college jobs.

Rolling with QB change not new for team
Thursday, November 27, 2008
BY STEVE DOERSCHUK

BEREA Another day, another quarterback change.

Injuries, disappointing play, regime changes and coaching moves have made them a way of life for the Browns.

In 10 years since coming back in 1999, the Browns have used 11 starting quarterbacks, some of whom have gone back and forth as the starters.

That includes Brady Quinn, who started the last three games, and Derek Anderson, who replaces the injured Quinn this week in preparation for the Colts..

Owner Randy Lerner indicated this week that he has asked different personnel chiefs, including Butch Davis and Phil Savage, to find a quarterback and ride it out with him.

Wideout Dont? Stallworth, who played for the Saints, Eagles and Patriots before joining the Browns, said, "You like to have one guy you can kind of rally around."

Browns notebook

One ugly Sunday

Sunday's game against Indianapolis reminds Browns fans of how the 2007 season ended.

In a day game, the Browns beat San Francisco to finish at 10-6. They needed the Colts to beat Tennessee to make the playoffs, but that didn't happen with backup Jim Sorgi replacing Peyton Manning ? the game meant nothing to Indy's playoff status.

"I can't imagine that we'd be well received in Cleveland, regardless," Head Coach Tony Dungy said.

Browns center Hank Fraley doesn't blame the Colts for basically handing a game to Tennessee.

"When I was with the Eagles, I liked it when we clinched our playoff position and could get some rest in the last game or two," Fraley said. "It would have been great to go to the playoffs, but the Colts earned what they got."

Crennel puts blame on himself
But good month may save his job

Friday, November 28, 2008

BEREA Romeo Crennel won't back down from the finger-pointing. He points the finger at himself.

What of the growing number of players saying they are largely to blame for the wreck of the 2008 season?

"They are incorrect, because I am the head coach, and the buck stops at my desk," Crennel said stoically. "It is my charge. If we don't win games, it's on me."

More than once during an interview this week, owner Randy Lerner used the word "accountability" as it relates to his key employees. Lerner never gave a clear indication Crennel will pay with his job. Indications are that Crennel's only hope is a dramatic charge through December, starting with Sunday's game against the rampaging Colts.

Quinn is Crennel's QB; Will Crennel be Quinn's coach?

by [email protected] Thursday November 27, 2008, 10:05 PM

Chuck Crow / The Plain Dealer
Browns coach Romeo Crennel may not be around to see Brady Quinn, his choice to be the team's No. 1 QB next season, under center in 2009. If that's the case, will Quinn even be the starter?

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2008/11/podcast_tony_grossi_talks_brow_1.html
Now that Romeo Crennel has declared Brady Quinn the starter for 2009, what does this mean for Derek Anderson, who led the Browns to a 10-6 record and made the Pro Bowl last season?
Are these final five games an audition for the 8 to 10 NFL teams looking for a new quarterback?
Perhaps. But he might not want to put the house on the market just yet.

Why? Because Crennel might not be the guy making the decision on next season's starting quarterback.
If Crennel is fired -- and signs are pointing that way -- the new coach will want his say on Quinn vs. Anderson. Or -- perish the thought -- he may not be enamored with either.

Repair the finger or immobilize it? Quinn remains undecided

Associated Press

Updated: November 28, 2008, 2:37 PM ET

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns quarterback Brady Quinn is still deciding whether to have surgery on his damaged right index finger. He didn't get much help making up his mind while passing the turkey and mashed potatoes around the Thanksgiving table.
"I don't have a bunch of family doctors, so they didn't have any more insight into the situation," he joked.
Quinn is done for the season after breaking the finger on his throwing hand, an injury he made worse by playing in Sunday's loss to the Houston Texans.
Doctors have given the second-year QB two options: have an operation or immobilize his finger in a splint for six weeks. It's possible even if Quinn chooses rest as his course of recovery, he may still need surgery if the injury doesn't heal properly.

I was wondering since the Cowboys are in dire need of a running back I wonder if they would be interested in Jamaal Lewis. I don't know it if we can trade him now or not but I have to believe that the Cowboys would be interested in him since they really don't have any running backs with Barber and Jones both injured and Jerry Jones wants that Super Bowl ring bad.

Browns Insider: Kellen Winslow irked by interference calls

by Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer Reporter Friday November 28, 2008, 9:07 PM

Joashua Gunter/The Plain Dealer
Kellen Winslow looks for a defensive interference call in the game against the Texans. Callled for seven offensive interference infractions this season, Winslow feels there is an inequity in the assessment of interference penalties.

Kellen Winslow is frustrated by his weekly offensive interference call, especially when defensive interference against him often goes uncalled.
"I've been thinking about it and thinking about it and I don't know," he said. "I can't even play out there. They're holding me, but I don't have a right to get off of them. If I get off them, I get called. It's unfair, but it might have something to do with the name."
Winslow has seven offensive interference calls this season, including one in the loss to the Texans that wiped out a 12-yard catch and one in the loss to the Broncos that wiped out a crucial 15-yard pass to Braylon Edwards. He has three in the past four games, including one in the loss to the Ravens on a 22-yard pass to him over the middle with the game tied at 27.

Browns' offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski wants balance; players want the ball

by Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer Reporter Friday November 28, 2008, 11:23 PM

The Browns' offense under Rob Chudzinski has passed the ball 55 percent of the time this season.

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2008/11/browns_insider_kellen_winslow.html

Browns offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski and Jamal Lewis cleared the air this week after Lewis questioned the play calling following Sunday's 16-6 loss to the Texans.
"I didn't see everything Jamal said but we sat down and we talked," said Chudzinski. "We're on the same page as far as those things go. I love having Jamal here and being a part of this team. I'm happy for him to be here and be our starting running back. I don't want it any other way."
Lewis declined to talk Friday, but after several conversations with Chudzinski throughout the week, the two are apparently on good terms.

Browns
Edwards has dropped ball with his play
Receiver's NFL-high 18 drops haven't helped struggling team
Sunday, November 30, 2008 3:10 AM
By Mary Kay Cabot

Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND -- A case can be made that as receiver Braylon Edwards has gone this season, so have the Cleveland Browns.
The 4-7 record certainly isn't all his fault, but Edwards' staggering number of drops is the No. 1 difference from last year's 10-6 season.
Heading into a game today against the Indianapolis Colts, he has dropped a league-high 18 passes -- and as many as 22 by the strictest standards.
At least four losses might have been victories had he made the clutch catches expected of a Pro Bowler. At this time last season, Edwards had 11 touchdown catches. This year, he has three. That's 48 more points last season.
