It's a wake-up call Error-plagued loss to Cardinals humbles Browns
By George M. Thomas

BEREA: Browns players said the P-word had little to do with their 27-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
That word is ''playoffs.''
Because of the perceived ease of the team's schedule this month, fans and the media have used the word freely when talking about the Browns.
Guard Eric Steinbach said that subject is the furthest thing from his teammates' minds. ''No, not this team. Not this locker room. We know what our goal is; it's whoever we're playing that week,'' he said. ''We've got four games left, and we're going to come out each week. Then we're going to sit back and see what happens.''
Coach Romeo Crennel said the team's focus should remain on short-term goals.

Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel shoulders blame in loss to Arizona Cardinals

'I could have done a much better job' preparing team, coach concedes
Tuesday, December 04, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Browns coach Romeo Crennel blames himself for the debacle in the desert, the Browns' 27-21 loss to Arizona thanks to four turnovers and 10 penalties.
The loss featured two interceptions, a bungled snap, a foolish kick of the ball by cornerback Leigh Bodden after a play was over that kept alive a Cardinals touchdown drive, a stumble by Josh Cribbs over Daven Holly's legs to muff a fair catch, a costly late hit, and some untimely head-butting.
"We just didn't play smart football," Crennel said. "When you don't do smart things out there on the field, you know that it hurts your chances of winning and it makes you think that you didn't do a good enough job coaching. And that was evident. I could have done a much better job of getting those guys prepared and getting those guys to understand the ramifications of their actions and the choices that they make on the field. We're going to have to work on that and try to get some things done there."

Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel pleased with team's effort

All was not lost in the Browns' 27-21 clunker to the Cardinals.
At 7-5, the Browns are still clinging to the second AFC wild-card spot by virtue of their better conference record than the Tennessee Titans, who also are 7-5.
The Browns are 5-4 in the AFC and the Titans are 4-4. Remaining opponents for the Browns are the New York Jets (3-9), Buffalo Bills (6-6), Cincinnati Bengals (4-8) and San Francisco 49ers (3-9). Combined record: 16-32.

Time for Cleveland Browns to get real, says Terry Pluto

Tuesday, December 04, 2007
There's a Sports Illustrated story titled "How the Browns learned to win."
Maybe it should have been titled "The Browns learning how to win."
Or even more to the point, "Can the Browns win when it really matters?"

Browns still have good playoff shot
Tuesday, December 4, 2007

BEREA Browns fans ... can you say, ?January road trip??

That?s the optimistic question coming out of Sunday?s 27-21 loss at Arizona.

The Browns hurt, but hardly ruined, their playoff chances by blowing a golden opportunity. They all but killed their chances to host a postseason game.

To get a home game in the first weekend of the playoffs, the Browns need to win the AFC North. Wild-card teams can?t play at home until the third weekend ? the AFC title game ? and then only in the unlikely event the other survivor began the postseason as a wild card.

To win the division, the Browns must finish with a better record than Pittsburgh. Cleveland lost to the Steelers twice and thus would lose the head-to-head tie-breaker. Even if the Browns win out and finish 11-5, the Steelers would have to go 1-3, putting them at 10-6.

So, kiss that option goodbye, even if you believe in Santa Claus.

Secondary does its job

BEREA Browns rookie cornerback Brandon McDonald doesn?t think he caught a break when Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald was a game-day scratch.

McDonald got another extended playing shift when Eric Wright missed a second straight game with a knee injury,

?I was really looking forward to seeing how I could do against (Fitzgerald),? said McDonald, who a week earlier played well against Houston?s Andre Johnson.

Cardinals Coach Ken Whisenhunt said he didn?t know Fitzgerald would be out until just before the game.

Wright?s injury was worrisome for the Browns a week after Kurt Warner passed for an NFL season-high 484 yards against San Francisco. But Cleveland?s secondary put up good numbers against Warner, who went 18-of-30 for 169 yards.

Team not thinking playoffs
By DAVID S. GLASIER, Journal Register News Service
12/04/2007

BEREA -- Browns coach Romeo Crennel said he didn't think all the outside talk about playoff contention had any impact on the way the Browns played Sunday.

''I don't talk to them about playoffs. I just talk to them about the next game and doing what we need to do to win the next game,'' he said. ''I know that other people have been talking about playoffs, but I don't talk about it. Hopefully, they listen to me more than anybody else.''

Linebacker Andra Davis seconded that.

Mental miscues irritate Crennel
By DAVID S. GLASIER, Journal Register News Service
12/04/2007

BEREA -- Romeo Crennel was a man of relatively few words the day after his Browns took a step back in their unexpected playoff drive.

But there was an edge in Crennel's breakdown of the many breakdowns that led to a 27-21 road loss to the Arizona Cardinals and dropped the Browns to 7-5.

''We lost a game that we didn't play well enough to win,'' Crennel said yesterday. ''It's disappointing because we feel like we could have won.''

In his post-mortem, Crennel quickly zeroed in on the four turnovers and 10 penalties that had much to do with why the Browns spent all of their lost day in the desert playing catch-up against a banged-up Arizona team missing two starters in the secondary and standout receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

Browns notebook
Team looking for lost focus

Tuesday, December 4, 2007 2:56 AM
By James Walker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
BEREA, Ohio -- Who were those unfocused, undisciplined players in orange helmets Sunday? Twenty-four hours after the Cleveland Browns' 27-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, the team was still asking that question.
The Browns entered the weekend having won five of six, but they were a different team against the Cardinals. They had four turnovers and 10 penalties, which included a head butt by Simon Fraser and a delay-of-game penalty by cornerback Leigh Bodden for kicking the football.

This team still has a ton of young players that tend to look past people from time to time. Hopefully this is the third and last time they do that this year. The scary thing is. With all of the mistakes that they made in the Oakland, St. Louis, and Arizona games. They still beat one of them and lost on the last play of the game in the other two.

Tiebreaker

Does anyone know who would have the tiebreaker if the Browns and Titans end up with the same record? Let's assume both of them lose one more AFC game. I can see the Browns losing to the Bengals in Cincinnati but I think the remaining three are locks with Buffalo and the 49ers in Cleveland.

On a sidenote when will the players learn the rules and act like they have been there before even if they haven't because if they don't they never will:biggrin:

This is the order if we need a tie breaker for Cleveland-Tennessee. #1 is N/A and we're currently ahead for #2. Not sure if they count both of their games against Houston and both of ours against Cincy for #3, but that could very well be the deciding factor if we lose to the Bengals. 4-8 and 10 I'm not going to look up, but, for #9, we currently have a net score of -2 and they have a net of -9.

  1. Head-to-head, if applicable.
  2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
  3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
  4. Strength of victory.
  5. Strength of schedule.
  6. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
  7. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
  8. Best net points in conference games.
  9. Best net points in all games.
  10. Best net touchdowns in all games.
  11. Coin toss.

Thanks! I guess it's just win that there won't be any need for a tiebreaker.:)

Playoff possibilities anything but secret Browns need to admit reality, face up to pressure
Published on Wednesday, Dec 05, 2007

Andra Davis had an interesting take on the Browns' first loss in three games Sunday.
''Now maybe everybody will stop talking about the playoffs and let us just focus on doing what we do, which we were doing from the get-go,'' Davis said after the loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
That's an interesting perspective.
Apparently the excitement from the world outside the team contributed to this loss.
For that, we certainly apologize.
One would hate to see people actually get excited about a team finally winning, so perhaps from this point forward everyone should sit quietly and hope.

Cleveland Browns know New York Jets will have tricks up their sleeves

Thursday, December 06, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Maybe the Browns finally uncorked a Josh Cribbs pass in the Arizona game - on a sweet two-point play - just to give New York Jets coach Eric Mangini something to fret about.
Mangini is the NFL's reigning king of trick plays. The Jets una bashedly use them more than any team. Man gini loves them on of fense because he has always hated defending them.
"I know what a headache those were to get ready for," Mangini said on a conference call on Wednesday. "So I just want to make sure we can create the same headache for other defensive coordinators."
