Edwards falls, gets back up, finds end zone Browns wide receiver says he wasn't touched on controversial catch

GLENDALE, ARIZ.: A Browns season that might be defined by Phil Dawson's two-bounce field goal in Baltimore got a little wackier Sunday.
With no time left in the third quarter of a 27-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, receiver Braylon Edwards scored on a 67-yard reception, running the final 30 yards after he fell and got up.

Turnovers, penalties costly as Cleveland Browns lose to Arizona Cardinals

Monday, December 03, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Glendale, Ariz.- Better lucky than good?
The Browns were neither here on Sunday in an exasperating 27-21 loss to the undermanned Arizona Cardinals.
They tried to pull out a game they didn't deserve to win on a last-play Hail Mary pass to tight end Kellen Winslow.

Anderson has bad day he'd love to forget

Browns QB blames himself for three very costly turnovers
Monday, December 03, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Glendale, Ariz.- Browns quarterback Derek Anderson was down on himself Sunday night after three first-half turnovers against the Cardinals on two interceptions and a fumble.
"Obviously, I don't like to throw picks and I don't like to lose a game for our team," said a somber Anderson. "I've just got to be better. That's what it comes down to."
Anderson spotted the Cardinals a 14-0 lead in the first quarter after they converted his first interception and his fumbled snap. Arizona scored 21 of its 27 points off turnovers, including Josh Cribbs' muff.

Cleveland Browns' loss to Arizona Cardinals deserves a flag

Monday, December 03, 2007Bud Shaw

Glendale, Ariz.
- Re checking the Browns' ac tive roster after Sunday's game, it was especially surprising to find Dwayne Rudd still not on it.
This thoughtless loss was completely owned and operated by the new, improved and yet unnerved Browns, who got called for every imaginable foul short of intentional grounding in a 27-21 loss to the depleted Arizona Cardinals.

Cleveland Browns players question ruling on Kellen Winslow's catch at end of game

Monday, December 03, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Glendale, Ariz.- Browns tight end Kellen Winslow felt the call on his catch at the end of the game could've gone either way, but many of his teammates felt he was robbed.
"[The officials] should've called it a force-out on the field," said cornerback Leigh Bodden. "I guess the ref just didn't have the guts to do it. That was an amazing catch. From the replay it looked like even the guy hit him a little bit early, before he even caught it."
Side judge Joe Larrew ruled that Winslow was out of bounds on the catch, near the front left pylon. Winslow made a sensational leaping grab of a 37-yard pass while getting hit by safety Oliver Celestin and cornerback Antrel Rolle. Replay official Dick Creed called for a review, but only to determine if Winslow had two feet inbounds. A force-out is not reviewable

Cribbs passes 2-point test, but dwells on muffed punt

Monday, December 03, 2007Terry Pluto
Plain Dealer Reporter
Glendale, Ariz. -- Joshua Cribbs really didn't want to talk about his pass to Kellen Winslow on a deceptive two-point conversion play.
Nor did he feel like admitting that overall, he had a pretty good game.
"I had a fumble, and it cost us a touchdown," he said after the Browns lost, 27-21, at Arizona on Sunday. "I have to look in the mirror."

GLENDALE, Ariz. At 7-5, heading into a game against the 3-9 Jets, the Browns still have a chance at a good season.

Their 27-21 loss to the Cardinals, though, made their approach to greatness seem more distant than the far side of the Grand Canyon.

?We?re fighting for perfection,? tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. said. ?We weren?t even close today.?

They were a judgment call from euphoria.

Cribbs? fumble burns Browns
Monday, December 3, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

GLENDALE, Ariz. Usually, Browns return man Joshua Cribbs is a big help. On Sunday, his third-quarter fumble really hurt.

Arizona led 14-10 when Cribbs ran to catch a punt near the Cleveland 20-yard line.

Cribbs tripped over teammate Daven Holly and fumbled, leading to a touchdown that put the Cardinals up 21-10 late in the third quarter.

?I was supposed to call poison to get my guys outta there,?? Cribbs said. ?I didn?t call poison. My guys were right there so I started trippin? over ?em.??

Cribbs blamed only himself.

?Those are plays I?ve been practicing,?? he said. ?I can?t let that happen.??

TODD PORTER

THEY LOST IT HERE

Any number of ill-timed memory burps ? Leigh Bodden?s delay-of-game penalty that extended a drive that led to a TD, Derek Anderson?s interception that was returned for a TD, his fumble, Joshua Cribbs? muffed punt or Simon Fraser?s penalty that ruined good field position on the final drive. But when the Browns had to settle for a field goal instead of a TD midway through the fourth quarter, it spelled doom. Anderson?s third-down pass for Braylon Edwards looked like a throw-away and Cleveland was content with 3 points. A TD would have put the Browns ahead with the extra point and tipped the momentum in Cleveland?s favor.

BROWNS NOTEBOOK
Monday, December 3, 2007
STEVE DOERSCHUK

Shades of Pittsburgh

Near the end of a Nov. 11 game at Pittsburgh, a penalty against Darnell Dinkins cost the Browns crucial field position on a Joshua Cribbs punt return.

The setback led to Phil Dawson needing to make a 52-yard field goal to tie the game on the last play.

With just under two minutes left Sunday, Cribbs returned a short kickoff to the 33 ? decent field position for trying to reverse a 27-21 Arizona lead.

Blocker Simon Fraser, though, was flagged for unnecessary roughness. A 15-yard walk-off forced the Browns to start on their own 18 ? memories of Heinz Field.

Head Coach Romeo Crennel was stoic on the sideline as Fraser tried to explain what happened.

Opportunities were kicked away
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
12/03/2007

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Leigh Bodden has been playing football for more than 10 years, but apparently no one ever told him kicking the football is restricted to kickers and punters only.

Cornerback Daven Holly nearly intercepted a third-down pass from Kurt Warner in the first quarter yesterday. He missed, but the pass was incomplete. Facing fourth-and-4 at the Browns 37, the Cardinals would have surely punted rather than risk a field goal try from 54 yards.

As it turned out, the Cardinals did not have to make a decision. Bodden kicked the ball in frustration after Holly dropped it. He was penalized 5 yards for delay of game. The Cardinals got another chance and scored a touchdown four plays later for a 14-0 lead.

''I didn't know it was like spiking the ball or throwing the ball,'' Bodden said. ''I was unaware and it cost us.''

Mistakes, near-catch haunting in 27-21 loss
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
12/03/2007

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Four times this season, the Browns started in a hole and were able to dig themselves out to win the game.

Instead of finding another escape tunnel yesterday after falling two touchdowns behind the Cardinals, the Browns turned the ball over four times, committed 10 penalties and missed opportunities too numerous to count in a 27-21 loss.

The Cardinals had their own problems, committing 11 penalties and converting just four of 12 third down situations.

''We're fighting for perfection and we weren't even close today,'' tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. said.

Browns sink under weight of mistakes

Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. tries to make a catch in the end zone on the final play as cornerback Antrel Rolle, right, and safety Oliver Celestin defend.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Perhaps the Cleveland Browns believed their own press clippings this week. Maybe the national attention and plethora of interviews distracted them in preparation for a game yesterday against the Arizona Cardinals.
Whatever the reason, the Browns did not play the brand of football to which they have become accustomed, losing 27-21.

Browns notebook: Fraser's penalty handicaps Browns

The Browns' Kellen Winslow Jr. goes high for the catch but can't get both feet down in the end zone on the final play.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Cleveland Browns not only had penalties, they had stupid penalties. Errors plagued the Browns in the 27-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals yesterday. Cleveland committed 10 penalties for 77 yards, and several mistakes came at crucial points of the game.
Among the more costly penalties was Simon Fraser's head butt for a personal foul on a kickoff return, which cost the Browns 15 yards on their final drive.

Sloppy Browns show youth in mistake-riddled loss

By JOE MILICIA
Associated Press Writer
BEREA, Ohio ? The Cleveland Browns found a way to silence some of that distracting playoff talk.
They did it by playing one of their sloppiest games of the season, committing four turnovers and 10 penalties in a 27-21 loss at Arizona on Sunday.
Cleveland has found ways to overcome its mistakes in recent weeks ? typically by scoring a lot of points late and squeaking out wins in overtime.
But some egregious errors Sunday ? like cornerback Leigh Bodden kicking the ball after the defense made a stop ? had the Browns looking like the bumbling teams of years past instead of a postseason candidate.
