THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
BEREA, Ohio -- In addition to quarterback Derek Anderson, the Cleveland Browns will potentially have another big-name free agent hitting the market after this season, running back Jamal Lewis.

The Browns signed Lewis to a one-year deal before this season to see if he could be a featured back in Cleveland's offense. Lewis has done a good job, rushing for 741 yards and eight touchdowns in 11 games.
Despite playing in a pass-first offense, Lewis is on pace to rush for more than 1,000 yards for the sixth time in his career.

Special-teams play gets rookie noticed
Cornerback faces new test after starring Sunday
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA: For seven games, Browns rookie defensive back Brandon McDonald played only on special teams. Little did he know that General Manager Phil Savage considers that the perfect trial.
''Priest Holmes was a gunner for us in Baltimore before he ever carried a football,'' Savage said of the former Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs running back. ''Brandon had shown up on special teams. If you show that demeanor, usually you can become a pretty decent offensive or defensive player.''

Receivers reminiscent of another era's heroes Slaughter raves about current Browns corps; Brennan says old group better
By Marla Ridenour

Webster Slaughter is jealous.
So much so that he jokingly vowed, ''I might be back next year.''
Slaughter, a 43-year-old former Browns receiver, lives in Missouri City, Texas, outside Houston, but makes it a point to watch at least part of the Browns' games on DirecTV.
A second-round pick in 1986, Slaughter played six years with the Browns and the most passes he caught in a season was 65, for a team-record 1,236 yards in 1989. He sees the big numbers Kellen Winslow, Braylon Edwards and Joe Jurevicius are putting up and longs to play in coordinator Rob Chudzinski's offense.

Cardinals QB Warner sees some of himself in Anderson

Sunday, December 02, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
When Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner looks at Derek Anderson, he can't help but reminisce about his own improbable rise from grocery store stockboy to NFL and Super Bowl MVP.
It was 1999 and Warner was plucked off the Rams bench and thrown into the starting lineup to replace the injured Trent Green.
He went on to become one of the great success stories in NFL history, leading the Rams to a 13-3 record and a Super Bowl victory over the Titans. Along the way, he won those MVP awards and earned the first of his three Pro Bowls that season.

Browns success will put spotlight on coordinators

Sunday, December 02, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
One byproduct of winning that the Browns haven't had to worry about for years is losing assistant coaches to head coach jobs.
At least a couple of Browns assistants could benefit from the team's turnaround season and be mentioned as head coach candidates.
The two most likely to get consideration are offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski and defensive backs coach Mel Tucker.

Cleveland Browns coach Crennel a good guy who finishes first

Sunday, December 02, 2007Bud Shaw
Plain Dealer Columnist
What we are seeing in Be rea these days isn't so much vindication for Romeo Crennel as evidence of what he does best.
Slow and steady worked for the tortoise. Now we're seeing the benefits of Crennel's ap proach with a young team winning for the first time, a team that easily could get ahead of itself but hasn't (yet).
With five games remaining in which the Browns will be favored to win, the benefit of the Super Bowl rings Crennel owns - a collection that was in large part the reason he was hired - are on display in mostly unspoken ways.

Browns report
Sunday, December 2, 2007
STEVE DOERSCHUK

Two of the guys

By this time last year, the Browns were adjusting on the run after firing play-caller Mo Carthon. Pass catchers Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow Jr. were viewed as borderline malcontents with mouths and egos a bit too big.

Now?

Carthon is back in view, as running backs coach for the Cardinals. Rob Chudzinski is calling plays for a Browns offense averaging 351.2 yards a game, way up from last year?s 264.6.

Now, it?s all quiet on the western front with Winslow and Edwards.

Kellen Winslow Jr. is on pace to break the Browns record for receptions in a season.

BEREA, Ohio -- There are times when Kellen Winslow Jr. goes to bed on Sunday nights unsure of how he will feel in the morning. "Sometimes 60 (years old), sometimes 30," the Cleveland Browns tight end said.

Cleveland Browns | Rally comes up short in 27-21 loss

Rally comes up short in 27-21 loss

12.02.2007

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- A wild Browns' rally fell short Sunday as the Cardinals stopped a last-minute drive and preserved a 27-21 win.
Derek Anderson overcame a slow start to rally the Browns, but his final pass to Kellen Winslow was ruled incomplete after a lengthy review. The pass was ruled incomplete on the field, and referee Jerome Boger ruled that Winslow did not get both feet inbounds.
The Browns slip to 7-5. The Cardinals improve to 6-6.

I haven't ready anything in this thread, but how much do these refs need to be fired? A blown call to give the Browns a TD and another to screw them out of the win. They made a quick trip out from West Virginia last night.

Arizona holds on to beat mistake-prone Browns

By Bob Baum
Contributing writer

Sunday, December 02, 2007

GLENDALE, Ariz. ? Mistakes made the difference in Arizona, and the Cardinals beat another AFC North team.
Arizona turned three of Cleveland's four turnovers into touchdowns, Edgerrin James topped 100 yards rushing for only the second time this season and the Cardinals held on to beat the Browns 27-21 on Sunday.

Dumb mistakes add up to senseless loss for Browns Discipline is lost in Browns' loss
Published on Monday, Dec 03, 2007

GLENDALE, ARIZ.: The Browns visited the desert Sunday and played with their heads in the sand.
Might as well have, at least, with all the numbskull plays they made.
The Browns gave a game to the Arizona Cardinals, who accepted, but not too willingly.
There will be many laments that officials did not give Kellen Winslow a catch on his amazing effort on the game's last play. But the call was incomplete, and replay cannot overrule a force out.
The last call wasn't the problem. The plays prior were.
The Browns played bad football.
Dumb football.

Browns insist Winslow was forced out Tight end makes catch on last play, officials rule it was incomplete
By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Monday, Dec 03, 2007
GLENDALE, ARIZ.: The Browns were unanimous about the last play of Sunday's 27-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
Browns tight end Kellen Winslow should have been credited with a touchdown, they said.
''It was (a TD),'' Browns quarterback Derek Anderson said. ''But I don't want to talk about it.''
Then he talked about it.
''It was a force out,'' Anderson said. ''From what I saw, (Winslow) had one foot in and the guy pushed him out.''
