BROWNS
Cleveland Browns may give Derek Anderson highest tender

Thursday, November 29, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Phil Savage holds all the cards in the poker game that involves the careers of quarterbacks Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn, and the immediate future of the Browns.
On Wednesday, the Browns' general manager laid one of them down.
For the first time publicly, Savage said he is leaning toward giv ing restricted free agent An derson the high est contract ten der after the season.
The tender of $2.562 million would guarantee the Browns first- and third-round draft choices if a QB-hungry team offered Anderson a long-term contract to be its starter.
If Anderson stayed through 2008, he could then become an unrestricted free agent in 2009.

Jamal Lewis' future with Cleveland Browns up in the air

Thursday, November 29, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Jamal Lewis' future with the Browns is still up in the air, Browns General Manager Phil Savage said Wednesday.
Lewis' contract is up after this season, but the two sides have yet to begin renegotiating. He was signed to a one-year deal in the off-season worth $3.5 million, with another $1.5 million in incentives.
"Jamal and I have a good relationship," said Savage. "I'll keep him in the loop in terms of what we decide to do. I have enough respect for him that if I went to him and told him we were going to go in a different direction, he'd appreciate that. If I go to him and say, 'Hey, Jamal, we want to do something for next year,' I think he'd appreciate that as well. But I think he's laid it out there for us, and it's been great to see."

BROWNS ANALYSIS: Room for two QBs?
Thursday, November 29, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

Is there room enough on the Browns for Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn?

?That?s a good question,? Quinn said Wednesday.

?I don?t want to get into that,? Anderson said a few minutes earlier.

Browns General Manager Phil Savage got into it after Anderson and Quinn headed out to practice.

Basically, Savage said nothing specific while indicating the Browns are open to every knock-your-socks-off trade offer that might come along after this season.

Savage said loud and clear Anderson will be hard to get.

BROWNS REPORT
Thursday, November 29, 2007
STEVE DOERSCHUK

Enjoy the ride, kid

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner was the quarterback who came out of the blue in 1999.

Now 36, Warner offered this advice to the 2007 surprise QB, Derek Anderson:

?It doesn?t last very long in the big scope of things. Enjoy every minute of it. Hey, just sit back, keep doing what you?re doing.?

Warner played in the Arena League before catching on as a No. 3 QB with the Rams in 1998. St. Louis exposed him to the expansion draft, but the Browns passed.

?I really didn?t think the Browns would waste a pick on me,? he said.

Nagging injuries concern Browns' coach
UPDATE: 2:49 PM, Wednesday, November 28, 2007
BY Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

BEREA Slugging their way to a 7-4 record has taken a toll on the Browns.

Head Coach Romeo Crennel said today that he will hold a ?more than normal?? number of players out of practice rather than risk aggravating nagging injuries.

Notably, wideout Braylon Edwards will not practice because of a hamstring problem, Crennel said. Edwards ranks sixth in the NFL with 894 yards. He has scored 11 touchdowns.

?I hope he gets through Sunday,?? Crennel said. ?We?ll know more tomorrow.

?He might have strained it a little bit in the (Houston) game.??

Browns face bigger threat at quarterback Sunday
Wednesday, November 28, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA The Browns are in a run of games mostly against quarterbacks who haven?t proven squat.

The list:

? Game 10. Baltimore used injury replacement Kyle Boller.

? Game 11. Houston QB Matt Schaub was a No. 90 overall draft pick a year before Charlie Frye went at No. 67.

? Game 13. Former Oregon Duck Kellen Clemens can only dream of a year like the one ex-Oregon State Beaver Derek Anderson is having. Clemens was 12-for-27 for the Jets in a 34-3 loss to Dallas.

? Game 14. Rookie third-round pick Trent Edwards is warming up in the bullpen after J.P. Losman?s latest loss, 36-14 to Jacksonville.

Cards? WRs tough to stop; Fitzgerald leads this corps
Wednesday, November 28, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

The passing parade of No. 3 overall picks leads to the desert. For the second straight week, Braylon Edwards will be offset by a fellow former No. 3 pick on the other side.

The Browns neutralized Houston wideout Andre Johnson, a No. 3 pick in 2003. Now they?re gearing up for Arizona?s Larry Fitzgerald, the third pick of the 2004 draft, who is coming off a nine-catch, 156-yard game.

It?s sort of like that at running back. Jamal Lewis, the fifth pick of the 2000 draft, is coming off a 134-yard game for the Browns. Edgerrin James, the fourth pick of the 1999 draft, gave Arizona 78 yards in 17 carries against San Francisco.

Death leaves Browns assessing safety

BEREA -- Young athletes learn quickly, as early as junior high school and sometimes even sooner, what success on the field or basketball court can bring. As success grows for those not weeded out as competition intensifies, so does their fame and riches.

What they do not always think about early on is the price of fame and fortune. It can be a lot more than being unable to go to a restaurant and eat in peace, a fact brought home to players in the Browns locker room yesterday with the tragic shooting death of Redskins safety Sean Taylor.

Taylor, 24, was shot during a break-in in his home in Miami early Monday morning He was there rather than with the team because he was nursing a knee injury.

Taylor died the next day. Police are still investigating and looking for a link between the break-in at Taylor's home Monday and one eight days earlier.

Savage remains quiet on Anderson's future
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer

BEREA --?Phil Savage is not tipping his hand about his plans for the most burning question surrounding the future of the Browns -- what is he going to do about Derek Anderson at the end of the year?

''That's for us to know and everyone else to find out,'' the Browns general manager said yesterday during a scheduled news conference.

Savage has several options concerning the quarterback, who in his first season as a starter has the Browns in line for a playoff spot. One option is to work out a long-term contract for Anderson with his agent, David Dunn.

''I wouldn't say that is out of the realm, without a doubt,'' Savage said. ''(Dunn) seems to find my e-mail address and texts me after every game, particularly when it's a win or when Derek plays well. I'm sure there will be some communication at some point.''

A long-term contract would benefit the Browns because then they would have Anderson and Brady Quinn under contract and be able to trade one of them after 2008 or 2009.

Browns' GM faced with tough decision at QB

Anderson's success might keep Quinn on Cleveland's bench longer than expected.

By Tom Withers
Associated Press

Friday, November 30, 2007

BEREA ? There's not a quarterback controversy in Cleveland. It's more like a conundrum.
Derek Anderson's emergence as a quality starter, which has left rookie Brady Quinn on the bench, has the Browns faced with an interesting dilemma once their so-far surprising season ends.

Anderson will be a restricted free agent, and the Browns will be able to match any offer made to him by another team.

Lewis now noncommittal on staying Running back says his play has made his point
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Friday, Nov 30, 2007
BEREA: Two weeks ago, running back Jamal Lewis said he wanted to stay in Cleveland.
With five regular-season games remaining on his one-year contract, Lewis didn't sound as sure about that Thursday.
Perhaps he knows the harsh realities of the business side of the NFL. Perhaps he thinks General Manager Phil Savage will decide to spend the Browns' money on defense. Or perhaps Lewis has faith that Savage, whom he has known since his days with the Baltimore Ravens, will take care of him if he can.

Browns notebook
Anderson creates options in 2008 draft Team could keep QB or use him to add picks
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sportswriter

Published on Thursday, Nov 29, 2007
BEREA: Going off a gut feeling might have been fitting for the Browns' last major quarterback decision: Tim Couch or Kelly Holcomb.
But figuring out what to do with Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn this offseason will require more than a coin flip.
